초록

본 논문은 <속비구니전>을 중심으로 중국 비구니의 선 수행 성립과 발달 그리고 종파 형성과 쇠퇴기로 구분해 정리한 것이다. 초기불교 교단 내에서 비구니 수행자들은 석존의 가르침에 의지하면서 근기에 따라 자유롭게 수행하였다. 그러나 불교가 중국으로 전래되면서 달마선 이후 시대의 흐름에 따라 종파가 형성되는 등, 중국 전통의 수행풍토가 정착되었다. 이러한 과정에서 비구니들은 간화선을 비롯한 다양한 수행법을 수용하면서 수행자로서 혹은 전법자로서의 일생을 보냈다.
<속비구니전>은 약 200 여명의 비구니들의 수행과 전반적인 생활을 시대별로 소개하고 있으며, <조동종니승사>는 선 수행 비구니의 득법기연과 종파계도를 중심으로 기록하였다. <속비구니전> 권1은 선종의 성립기라고 볼 수 있는 양나라 달마의 제자인 총지비구니를 시작으로 해서 당 시대 북종선사 법완선사의 제자인 적연 비구니의 수행이력을 소개하고 있다.
권2는 구지화상과 인연이 있었던 실제비구니를 비롯해 약 18명의 선 수행 비구니의 이력을 소개하였다. 당 중기 이하 송대에는 5가7종의 종파가 형성되고 소멸되기도 했던 시대이다. 비구니들은 이러한 과정 속에서 기연이 있는 선사를 따라 자연스럽게 각 종파에 속하여 수행한다. 이 시대 비구니는 높은 구도열정과 깨달음으로 비구 선지식의 인정을 받았으며, 사부대중 앞에서 상당법문도 마다하지 않았다. 중국 선종의 쇠퇴기였던 원․명 시대를 기록한 권3은 8명의 선 수행자를 소개한다. 이 시기의 비구니는 선지식과의 득법기연이나 활동이 거의 생략된 채로 기록되었다. 대부분의 비구니들은 경전 독송에 비중을 두는 삶을 살았으며, 단지 몇 몇만이 깨달음을 향한 구도심과 제자들을 가르치는 열정으로 세인들의 존경을 받았다. <속비구니전>의 권4와 5는 청시대 비구니의 수행과 삶을 다루고 있다. 두 권의 내용이 매우 대조적인데, 4권은 앞의 원․명시대보다 매우 활발하게 수행하고 있는 비구니들의 모습을 생생하게 기록하고 있다. 화두를 통해 깨달음을 얻은 비구니는 상당법문은 물론이며, 임제선의 특징인 할이나 방을 자유롭게 활용하며 당당하게 비구들과 맞서는 걸출한 수행자의 모습을 보여주고 있다. 반면, 권5에 소개된 비구니들은 주로 경전 독송이나 정토수행을 위주로 하고 있다. 특이한 점은 정토 수행이나 염불을 하는 비구니들 가운데는 폐관 수행을 했던 경우도 몇 명 볼 수 있다. 특히 청대 후기를 지나면서 비구니들은 개인적으로 시문이나 어록 등 저술을 남기고 있으며, 제자들을 교육시키고 교육을 위한 장소를 만드는데 주력하였다.

영어초록

This paper deals with the Foundation and Development of Zen Practice of Chinese Buddhist Nuns focused on the book " " and also examines it through the division of the period of the founding of Buddhist sects and their Disappearance. In the early buddhist communities, Buddhist mendicant nuns practiced freely according to their abilities based on the teaching of the Sakyamuni.
However, in the Transmission of Buddhism to China, After the teaching of Bodhidharma styles of the practice of chinese Tradition, foundation of Zen buddhist sects etc. according to the following of periods, have been established. In the process like this, buddhist nuns passed their lives as practioner or propagator accepting various methods of budhist practices involved with Ganwha-Seon.
The book “續比丘尼傳” introduced the practice and whole life of about two hunderts buddhist nuns according to each period. And the book "History of buddhist nuns in 曹洞 sects “曹洞宗尼僧史” was recorded focused on the reason to become nuns of Zen pracitioner and the leading to buddhist sects.
The first chapter of the book “續比丘尼傳” introduced the carrier of buddhist traing of buddhist nuns from the nun Chongji(總持) who is a follow of Bodhidharma in Yang Dynasty which seems to be regard as the establishment period to the nun (寂然) who is a follow of Zen Master Fawan(法玩) who was Zen Master of Northern-Zen in Dang Dynasty.
The second chapter of this book introduced the buddhist training carrier of about eighteen Zen mendicant nuns endowed with the nun 실제, In the period from the middle of Dang Dynasty to Song Dynasty the Seven Zen Schools appeared and disappeared. Among this process buddhist nuns belonging to their each sects practiced freely according to Zen Master who is related with. They at that time were acknowledged to monks, Zen Masters by their passion of searching for achieving Enlightenment and the state of the enlightened and spoke before many peoples in the main hall.
In the third chapter of this book which was recorded in Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty whose period Chinese Zen Buddhism slowly disappeared were introduced eight Zen Masterin as nuns.
nuns at that time were recorded not involving of the causing of become nuns connected with Zen Master and their activities. Most of nuns lived focused on the reading Sutras and Only several received the reverence form laypeople because of their mind searching for Enlightenment and passion to teach their pupils.
The fourth and fifth chapter of the book dealed with the Practice and lives of nunss of Qing Dynasty. The contents of these two chapters are very contradictory. In the fourth Chapter was recorded vividly the state of nuns who were more practicing than them Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty.
Nuns who attained Enlightenment by Hwaduseon spoke the Dharmatalk before four assemblies in main hall and showed the state of very great buddhist trainer against monks by freely using of beating their questioner with a stick or shouting which is the mark of Lin chi Zen school. However, nuns introduced in the fifth chapter of this book are preeminent in reading of Sutras and the practice of the Pureland. The special thing is that we can see several nuns who practiced closed door without contact with others. Among the nuns who are practicing Pureland and praying for Buddhas. Specially passing the last of Qing Dynasty, nuns wrote individually the work as their verses or discourses and made an effort to prepare the place for education to educate their students.
