비구니 수옥과 경봉 선사의 한시 교유 (The Exchange of Chinese Poetry between Bhikkuni Suok and Seon Master Gyeongbong)

초록

이 논문은 비구니 수옥과 경봉 선사가 1957년 4월부터 1965년 10월까지 양산 내원사 동국 제일선원에서 조실과 주지로서 주고받은 14차례의 한시들을 최초로 상세 분석한 것이다. 자료 분석이 수옥의 친필노트인<도가한화>를 기준으로, 경봉의 삼소굴일지 등과 비교하여 이루어졌기에 경봉이 아닌 수옥의 입장에서 시구를 해석하고 논지를 전개하였다. 14차례 교유에서 다루어진 소재는 새해축하, 안거 해제, 내원사중창, 윤현진 충혼비, 구하천보 추모 등이다. 14차례를 모두 교유한시로 본 근거는 시의 압운과 소재의 동일성 때문이다.
논자는 특히 선가의 해제 날 경봉이 발표한 한시와 그에 대한 수옥의 차운에 주목하였는데, 모두 6차례로서 기해년 동안거, 임인년 하안거, 계묘년 하안거, 갑진년 하안거∙동안거, 을사년 하안거 해제가 그것이다. 내용 분석을 통해 이것들을 모두 법거량, 즉 스승과 제자간의 선문답의 성격을 지닌 선시로 파악하였다. 따라서 스승과 제자가 마주보고 대화하듯이 시구를 2구씩 배대하여 그것이 은유하고 함축하는본래 의미를 밝히는데 주안점을 두었다. 또한 이 해제 운들 중에 경봉의갑진년 하안거 해제 운은 그에 대해 수옥뿐만 아니라 해봉 등 6명의 차운이 필사본으로 남아있어서, 1960년대 경봉선사가 지도하는 선가에서 한시가 어떻게 깨달음을 촉진하는 방편으로 제시되었는지, 그가풍을 목격할 수 있었다. 또한 선원의 조실이 발표한 해제 운에 대해대등하게 차운했다는 측면에서 시인으로서 수옥이 어떻게 선교를 겸수했는지에 초점을 맞추어 그 삶을 살펴보았다.

영어초록

This paper is the first-ever attempt to analyze in detail the 14 exchanges of Chinese poems, from April 1957 to October 1965, between Bhikkuni Suok and Seon Master Gyeongbong the abbess and guiding teacher respectively of NaewonsaTemple in Yangsan－which took place at the temple's Seon center, "Dongguk Jeil Seonwon." I analyzed the data based on Suok's handwritten manuscript titled Doga hanhwa and compared it with Gyeongbong's Samsogul ilji. I then analyzed the poems and developed my argument based on Suok's perspective, not Gyeongbong's. The subjects covered in the 14 exchanges of poems included: New Year's celebrations, the closing of Seon retreats, the reconstruction of Naewonsa Temple, the Memorial Monument for Yun Hyeon-jin, and the remembrance ceremony for the deceased renowned monk Guha Cheonbo. My basis for regarding all 14 exchanges as Chinese poems for the purpose of friendship and exchange lies in the use of the same rhymes and subject matter in the poems of both monastics.
I paid particular attention to the Chinese poems written by Gyeongbong on the closing days of Seon retreats and the matching rhymes in Suok's poems. There are six pairs of poems in total, and they were written for the following retreats: the winter retreat in the year of Gihae, the summer retreat in the year of Imin, the summer retreat in the year of Gyemyo, the summer and winter retreats in the year of Gapjin, and the summer retreat in the year of Eulsa. Through content analysis, I identified all of these as "dharma duels," namely, Seon poems that are actually Seon dialogues between a teacher and a disciple. Therefore, I focused on identifying the true topic that the two masters wrote about metaphorically by comparing two matching verses as if they were having a face-to-face conversation. In addition, the manuscripts of six other poems with rhyme-matching to Gyeongbong's poem－written on the closing of the summer retreat in the year of Gapjin－still exist, including poems by Haebong and Suok. Studying these poems, I was able to identify the Seon lineage tradition of how Chinese poems were presented as a means of promoting enlightenment in the Seon lineage followed by Seon Master Gyeongbong in the 1960s.
In addition, I examined Suok's life by focusing on her poetry and how she focused on combining the cultivation of Seon and teachings in that she wrote matching-rhyme poems equal in quality to those of the guiding teacher of a Seon monastery.
