    Abstract

A Study on Lesslie Newbigin's Ecclesiology for Establishing of Missional Ecclesiology in Korea

    Cho, Young Tae
    Asia Pacific Christian
    College&Seminary. Philippines

The issue of missional church has been raised recently by missiologists and scholars like Charles Van Engen, Craig Van Gelder, and Darrell L. Guder. Two theologians have been in the forefront to wake up the church and theology to the challenge of mission, the late South Africa David Bosch and Bishop Lesslie Newbigin.
This dissertation is organized into four chapters. The first chapter describes the purpose and method of this dissertation and the scope and limit of this study. The purpose of this dissertation is to establish a missional church in Korea through the study of ecclesiology of Lesslie Newbigin. For this study, I depended on the Newbigin's books including autobiography, articles, sermons, diary as a primary source and used other books about Newbigin, Korean scholar's books and articles as a secondary source.
The second chapter endeavors to deal with the Lesslie Newbigin's ecclesiology as follows: The first character is Biblical. From the Biblical perspective his ecclesiology can be described as an elected people, as a community of conversion, as the body of Christ, as an interpreter and executor of gospel, as an eschatological community and as a visible place. The second character is dynamical. Lesslie Newbigin was deeply interested in the study of Holy Spirit and church as a missionary. In terms of his understanding of the Spirit, his ecclesiology can be portrayed as a frequent experience of the Spirit at a mission field, as a witness of the Spirit about the kingdom of God, as the mission of Holy Spirit as end-time gift: deposit, first fruits, and foretaste, as a threefold Relation of the Church to the Witness of the Spirit, as the work of Holy Spirit outside the church. The third character is ecumenical. He began to work with ecumenical perspective during his school days and then practiced ecumenical perspective continually. According to Newbigin, the Christendom situation brought negative effects for the missionary understanding of the church. One of negative effects of Christendom that Newbigin points to is disunity of the church. Within Christendom the church accepted its disunity as a matter of course, but within a missionary situation it found it to be an intolerable scandal. The unity of the church was a long-standing concern for Newbigin. From the standpoint of his ecumenical ecclesiology can be depicted as a missionary experience and the unity of the church including reunion and the Church of South India, as differences of perspective on unity between Western churches and younger churches, as the unity of the church and the unity of humankind, as the threat of reconciled diversity and denominationalism, as communion and unity, and as the unity in the Bible.
The fourth chapter tries to apply Lesslie Newbigin's ecclesiology to Korean church for the purpose of establishing the missional church in Korea.
The fifth chapter summarizes the Lesslie Newbigin's ecclesiology and comes to a conclusion this study.
