초록

최근 가장 흥행에 성공한 애니메이션 <겨울왕국>(2013)은 안데르센의 동화 「눈의 여왕」을 모티프로 하여 만들어졌다. 그런데 비슷한 시기에 「눈의 여왕」을 각색한 극장용 애니메이션이 두 편 더 제작됐다.
러시아 위자트사에서 만든 <눈의 여왕>(2012)과 우리나라 스튜디오 다다쇼에서 만든 <카이:거울 호수의 전설>(2016)이 그것이다. OSMU 전략이 활발한 애니메이션 분야에서 원작 동화를 모티프로 하거나 각색하여 새작품을 제작하는 일은 빈번하지만 5년 사이 같은 동화를 모티프로 한 극장용 애니메이션이 세 편 상영된 것은드문 일이기에 주목할 만하다. 원작 동화는 OSMU 전략의 중요한 원천 소스이다. 그러나 애니메이션이라는 매체 특성상 변용·변주되기 마련인데 창작 캐릭터를 통해 변화를 이끌어내는 경우가 많다. 세 편의 애니메이션에는 모두 원작에 없던 장난꾸러기 캐릭터가 추가되었는데 이것은 애니메이션에서는 매체 특성상 장난꾸러기 캐릭터가 중요하다는 것을 시사한다. 본 연구에서는 세 편의 애니메이션에 등장하는 대표적인 장난꾸러기 캐릭터트롤, 올라프, 다람쥐의 핵심 대사와 행동을 비교하여 각각의 캐릭터들이 애니메이션 내러티브 내에서 어떤 기능을 하고 있는지 알아본다. 이를 통해 성공적인 장난꾸러기 캐릭터를 만들기 위한 조건을 찾아볼 것이다.

영어초록

Recently, the most successful animation <Frozen> (2013) was created with the motif of Andersen’s fairy tale <The Snow Queen>. Around the same time, two more animations for the theater were produced, adapting <The Snow Queen>. Those are <The Snow Queen> (2012) made by Russia’s Wizart Film and <Kai> (2016) made by studio Dadashow of Korea. In the animation category where the OSMU strategies are active, it is frequent to create new works by adapting the original fairy tale or using it as a motif, nevertheless, it is interesting that three theatrical animation films adapting the same fairy tale were produced within five years. Original fairy tales are the important source of OSMU strategy. However, due to the nature of an animation medium, the original works are often transformed or changed, especially through the creative characters. In all of the three animations, a mischievous character which was not in the original was added, which suggests that the mischievous character plays important role in the animation due to the nature of the media. Then, what role does the mischievous characters appearing in the three works in the animation narrative? The key lines and actions of the main mischievous characters Troll, Olaf, and Squirrel in the three animations were substituted into Christopher Vogler’s theory of mischievous characters, and the functions of each character according to ‘hero’s journey’ were examined. As a result, Troll, Olaf, and Squirrel perform the functions of the prototypical mischievous character during hero’s journey, but each character’s level or behavior is varied. Troll and Olaf, who are completely personified and able to freely direct lines and actions and evenly and faithfully perform not only psychological and dramatic functions but the functions of naughty heroes. On the other hand, Squirrel is incompletely personified and cannot perform psychological functions. The mischievous character in animation plays important role due to the nature of the medium, in addition, it is an essential character for child animation film because children, sympathizing with the mischievous character, raise their imaginations, get the vicarious satisfaction, and focus on the story. Hereafter, we should make greater efforts to create unique and attractive mischievous characters. Also, we should consider directing the mischievous characters to faithfully perform the original functions within the narrative.
