김유정 소설에 나타난 눈치 문화 -「봄·봄」, 「동백꽃」을 중심으로 (The Noonchi Culture in Yoojeong Kim’s novels- Focused on 「Spring·Spring」 and 「Camellias」)

초록

이 논문은 김유정 소설 「봄·봄」과 「동백꽃」을 중심으로 맥락에 따라 나타나는 눈치 문화를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 한국어 학습자가 한국어를 학습할 때 문화는 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있으므로 언어뿐만 아니라 한국 문화에 대한 충분한 이해가 뒷받침되어야 한다. 특히 한국은 집단주의 문화권이며 유교 문화권의 영향을 받았기 때문에 사람들 간의 관계를 중요하게 생각하며, 자신과 상대방의 체면을 지키려고 하는 사회문화적 특징을 지닌다. 이러한 사회문화적 특징으로 인해 자신의 의도를 맥락 속에 숨겨 은밀하게 표현하고, 의도를 맥락 안에서 알아차리는 눈치가 발달하게 되었다. 따라서 눈치 문화를 이해하지 못했을 때 원활한 의사소통이 불가능하므로 한국어 학습자가 눈치 문화를 이해하고 습득할 필요가 있다.
「봄·봄」과 「동백꽃」의 맥락을 언어적 맥락과 상황적 맥락, 사회문화적 맥락으로 나눠 살펴보았으며, 우선 언어적 맥락에서는 화용론적으로 의도를 함축해서 나타내는 발화나 자신의 마음과 반대되는 반어적 표현 등을 사용해서 눈치를 주고받는다. 또한 눈치를 주고받을 때 직접 언어로 표현할 수도 있지만 비언어적 행위를 하여 자신의 의도를 우회적으로 전달하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 두 작품의 인물들은 크게 ‘마름-머슴/소작인’의 관계로 나타나는데 상황적 맥락에서 살펴보면 목적과 내용 등에 따라 이 관계가 무너져 머슴이 마름에게 눈치를 주는 상황이 생기기도 하고, 다른 인물이 끼어들어 직설적으로 표현하지 못하고 우회적으로 표현할 수밖에 없는 모습을 보여준다. 즉, 관계의 상호작용을 통해 눈치를 주고받는 상황이 달라지는 것이다. 마지막으로 사회문화적 맥락에서 보면 소작인이 한없이 마름의 눈치를 보거나 「동백꽃」에서 주인공들이 계층의 문제로 인해 거리감을 느껴 눈치를 보는 등 1930년대의 식민지 지배 시대의 사회적 현실로 말미암아 눈치가 발생하고 있다. 이 연구로 한국어 학습자가 눈치 문화를 이해하고 더 나아가 원활한 의사소통을 하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study aims to analysis noonchi culture, which is shown in the 「Spring·Spring」, and 「Camellias」 by Yoojeong Kim’s novel, according to the context. When Korean learners study the Korean language, as the culture plays an important role, understanding Korean culture is significant as much as the Korean language. Especially, Korea is a collectivism cultural area and has been affected by the Confucius cultural area. Therefore, Korean people value the relationship among people, and Korea has a social and cultural specialty to save their face. Due to the sociocultural specialty of Korea, noonchi has developed to hide people’s intention, but express their intention confidentially, as well as catch each other’s intention in the context. In this regard, Korean learners are needed to understand and learn the noonchi culture, because it is not possible to communicate with Koreans when the learners don’t understand the noonchi culture.
This study examines the context of 「Spring·Spring」, and 「Camellias」 into linguistic context, situational context, and sociocultural context. Firstly, as for the linguistic context, people give and take noonchi through implicative speech as a perspective of the pragmatics, and express ironic expressions that are opposite of their intention. Also, when people give and take noonchi, it can be expressed through non-verbal action, which can indirectly deliver their intention characters of the two novels show their relation between ‘mareum(landlord) and farmhand/tenant.’ In the situational context, sometimes the farmhand gave noonchi to the landlord because of the purpose and contents and fell the relationship apart in the novel. Sometimes another character interrupted two characters, so they could not but express their intention indirectly not to express directly. In other words, giving and taking noonchi can differ to the interaction of the relationship. Lastly, in the sociocultural situation, when the tenant read the mareum‘s noonchi continuously, or main characters of 「Camellias」 felt distance between them, because of the social reality in 1930s, when was the Japanese colonial period, so noonchi situation happened. It is expected that this study can contribute to the Korean learners to understand noonchi culture as well as the good communication.
