뿌쉬낀의 산문론과 문학 이론의 적용성:“눈보라”를 중심으로 (Pushkin's Idea of Prose and Its Literary Application Reflected in "Snowstorm")

초록

In this article, I demonstrate the artistic design and the thematic unity employed in
Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin’s first completed short stories entitled The Tales of Belkin
(1831), and specifically in “Snowstorm.” There has been little discussion of this short
story or no comprehensive study has yet been published either in Russia or elsewhere,
when it comes to a theoretical approach to this tale. By identifying and elucidating
autobiographical, folkloristic, and thematic elements, the present study differs from, and
goes beyond previous analyses. Drawing on both Formalist and Structuralist approaches
to a literary work, my analysis presents how this intriguing tale is interwoven structurally
and thematically. Not only to enrich the interpretation but also to account for the possibility
of different readings of Pushkin’s “Snowstorm,” I use three new terminologies:
theory of an inverted triangle, macro-plot, and zero-character, none of which has been
used in literary criticism of Russian literature or in literary theory.
My reading should help future readers understand the enigmatic meaning of Pushkin’s
story created in the Belkin cycle. Another merit of this study lies in the fact that my
theoretic approach is accompanied by certain folkloristic readings of the texts. Folkloric
interpretation of this tale, which has largely been ignored in Pushkin scholarship and has
never been previously applied to the Belkin cycle in particular, leads us to identify the
architectonics, literary values, and artistic contribution that Pushkin achieves throughout
The Tales of Belkin. More essentially, the present paper substantiates that Pushkin’s idea
of prose-”Precision and brevity-these are the two virtues of prose. It demands ideas and
more ideas-without it, brilliant expressions serve no purpose”-illustrates a specific and
glaring example of the Pushkinian brand of new texts. “Snowstorm,” to say the least, is
the best work within the Belkin tales from the perspective of literary analysis in general,
and of Pushkin’s own view in particular.
