초록

김원일의 『슬픈 시간의 기억』은 일제강점기부터 6․25전쟁, 근대화 시대를 거쳐 오며 우리 사회에 쌓이게 된 역사적 기억과 상처들을 육화시켜 형상화하고 있는 연작소설이다. 그 연작 중 첫 번째 중편소설인 <나는 누구인가>는 소위 수난의 역사라고 불리는 우리 근현대사를 몸의 기억으로 가지고 있으면서, 그와 동시에 몸의 치장을 통해 그 기억을 위장하고자 하는 여성 노인의 이야기이다.
이 작품 속에서 인물은 ‘나’가 누구인지 끊임없이 의식적으로 고백을 하는 모습을 보인다. 그런데 이 고백은 사회적 공식담론을 내면화한 프리즘에 의해 만들어지거나 왜곡된 이야기이다. 더불어 이 의식적 고백의 목소리 사이사이에 은폐한 무의식적 기억이 틈입하여, 그것에 의한 비명도 서술공간에 혼재하게 된다. 그리고 그 속에서 ‘나는 누구인가’라는 물음은 ‘내가 생각하는 나’와 ‘내가 부정하는 나’ 사이에서 중층적인 의미망을 형성하며, 사회적인 의미의 물음을 독자에게 새롭게 던진다. 곧 <나는 누구인가>는 ‘나’가 누구인지 위장하고 그것을 스스로 믿고 싶어 하는 인물과 함께, 그 위장의 해제와 부정되는 기억의 조각들을 중층적으로 보여준다. 이때 우리는 그가 누구인지, 그를 그렇게 규정하도록 만드는 기제는 무엇인지 인물 층위, 서술 층위, 독자 층위에서 겹겹이 중층적으로 고민하게 된다.
본 연구에서는 <나는 누구인가>가 중층적 시선과 목소리가 혼재된 서술을 통해 남성중심사회의 담론에 묶이지 않은 여성 주체의 진정한 말을 보여주고자 한다고 평가한다. 의식세계에 침입하여 사회적 시선에 따라 만들어낸 자아정체성을 흔드는 무의식의 기억은, 중심의 논리에 따라 일관성 있는 서술로 정리된 사회·역사를 해체시키는 미시사의 틈입이다. <나는 누구인가>는 독자가 중심의 질서에 함몰되지 않고 역사를 진실하게 바라볼 수 있게끔 하기 위해, 그러한 미시사의 틈입을 중층적 시선과 목소리에 담아내어 전략적으로 보여주고 있는 작품인 것이다.

영어초록

『A Memory of Sad Times』 written by Kim Won-il is a medium-length novel that combined the different stories into one story intact, embodying historical memories and injuries which had been accumulated in our society, while passing through difficult times from the Japanese colonial period to the Korean War and the modernization period. The novel titled <Who am I?> which is the first medium-length story among his works is a story about an old woman who has memories of the Korean modern and contemporary history so called, a history of ordeal, but try to disguise her memories by adorning herself.
In Kim’s work, the character shows a look of making confession about ‘who am I?’ consciously. However, this confession is made by the prism in which official social discourse has been internalized, or, otherwise, it is a distorted story. With the progress of this confession, an unconscious memory, which is concealed in between the voices of conscious confession, has intruded, so then the screams caused by such intrusion are to be mixed in the descriptive space. In addition, amidst the event, the question such as ‘Who am I’ forms the double-layered semantic network between ‘I, as an individual that I am thinking of,’ and ‘I, as the individual that I am negating.’ The writer asks the readers a question about its social significance. Specifically, with the question such as <Who am I?> the writer disguises who I am, and shows removal of such camouflage and pieces of memory, which are being neglected, together with the characters who want to believe what they believe themselves in double layer form. At this time, we begin to wonder in double layer form: ‘who is he’, or ‘what is the mechanism that binds him to do so’, from the perspective of character layer, description layer, and reader layer, laying one upon another.
In this study, the researcher evaluates that the novel, <Who Am I?> intends to show a true statement rooted in female subject, which has not bound in the discourse of male-oriented society, through the descriptions in which double-layered look and voice are mixed. The unconscious memory that stirs up self-identity, which has been produced according to social attention by invading conscious world, is an intrusion of microhistory that disjoints society and history as well, which have been arranged by means of consistent descriptions in accordance with the logic focused on the central position. <Who Am I?> is a literary work that strategically shows such an intrusion of microhistory having put it in the double-layered look and voice in order to make the readers look at the history truthfully without being caved in the order of its center.
