『백팔번뇌』와 최남선의 문화사관 (Recognition and Value of Korean History by Choi Nam Seon through in Baekpalbeonneo(108 dukkha))

초록

본고는 『백팔번뇌』에 드러난 최남선의 국가관, 국토관, 문화관에 신라의 統三 과정과 비견할 요소가 散見됨을 지적하여 그의 문화사관을 재평가할 단서를 마련하고자 한다. 『백팔번뇌』 1부의 ‘님’은 감각을 통해 규정할 수 없는 종교적 대상이며, 쇠락 또는 소멸을 앞두고 있지만 그 자취는 화자 자신을 통해 영속적인 것으로 거듭날 수 있는 존재로 표현되었다. 이는 「불함문화론」 11장에서 단군을 정치적 권력자보다는 주술적․종교적 권능을 지닌 군주로서 더욱 강조했던 사례와 연결된다. 불교의 전래 과정에서 攝化하기는 했지만, 古來의 ‘하늘임’ 관념과 인격신을 현세의 군주에 연결시키고, 군주에게 초월적 신통력을 기대한 신라 문화의 관습을 최남선이 나름의 방식대로 계승했음이 확인된다. 2부에서 ‘조선국토’는 공간적, 시간적으로 아득한 범위를 지닌 것으로 표현되었는데, 특히 ‘산’이 원시․고대문화의 유산으로서 주목받고 있다. 그런데 「불함문화론」 1장부터 지속되어온 최남선의 관점에 의하면 산의 명칭에 남아있는 ‘白’ 자의 원형이야말로 문헌 전승의 과정에서 사라진 고대문화를 부활시킬 매개로서 중대하다. 산악숭배를 비롯한 명산대천제사는 신라가 통삼을 이룩한 직후에 정비되었는데, 통일국가의 문화상징을 위해 기존의 신앙 체계를 정비, 위계화한 것으로 추정한다. 그러나 최남선의 시도는 신라에서와 같은 대내적 필요에 따른 정리가 아닌, 세계를 향한 대외적 긍지를 위해 한국의 산천의 우월성을 입증하고자 했다는 점에 차이가 있다. 3부는 ‘제가 저를 잊어버린다’는 추상적인 부제를 달고 있다. 몇몇 작품을 통해 보면 여기서의 ‘잊음’은 자기 상실과 그에 따른 님의 부재를 함께 표현한 것이다. 이 불투명성은 「불함문화론」 곳곳에 보이는 중국, 일본 나아가 세계 문화의 기원이 불함문화에 있다는 가설의 근거가 지닌 불투명함과 같은 맥락에 있다. 본고의 성과를 바탕으로 최남선과 초기 국학자들의 정신세계가 유래한 연원을 성찰하는 것이 앞으로의 과제이다.

영어초록

This thesis aims to examine recognition of Korean culture by Kim Nam Seon through comparison of Silla Culture and Baekpalbeonneo(108 dukkha) and to consider the cultural history value of such recognition. Up to now, study of Baekpalbeonneo aims to examine concrete aspects of recognition on sijo (traditional three-verse Korean poem) as modern culture of Choi Nam Seon through creation works. Example is the case of focusing on new performance as modern sijo focusing on life sijo or travel sijo with travel or daily life as subject matter. This thesis, however, will pursue a discussion focusing on value and limit exposed when Baekpalbeonneo is read in comparison to feature of Silla culture, rather than paying attention to newness of materials shown in the surface of the works. In this case, we can pay attention to following 3 aspects.
First, concept for leader of theocracy state. Choi Nam Seon frequently mentions shapes of 'beloved one' in Baekpalbeonneo. It not only refers to the absolute from the religion such as Buddhism, but also the existence close to king who exercise actual control over the country. So to speak, he is the leader who covers religion as well as politics and is the shape close to Dangun who was the leader at the time of theocracy. And he is the existence that reminds us of the king of the Buddhism of Silla Dynasty. In particular, 'beloved one' here is described as the existence who is close to the one and only god, it reminds of thoughts of the future that puts up the Bulham culture theory as the peak of the East Culture.
Second, main sites of Korean culture are presented as a type of "shrine". He composed travel sijo on many parts of our country, which is discussed much to be connected with modern concept for "territory". In the mean time, while emphasizing concept on areas around unification, Silla stood Sunsubi(monuments) throughout the country. Hwarang refined their spirits while strolling on the mountains and streams. It is important as the chance when unique thought of Taoist hermit(Shinseon) and foreign buddhism is interconnected. Harmony between unique elements and foreign elements was the critical assignment of the times in the era of Choi Nam Seon.
Third, elitism as culture originating country is clear. He suggests that Korea is the originating country of oriental culture in his works including "Bulham culture theory" presented earlier, and seems confident that Korea will play a pivotal role in the history of world culture from past to present and future. Leaving the truth of such confidence aside, it is meaningful in that he expressed such pride and and self-respect in this era of national crisis. Silla took pride as culture originating country presenting it as divine land, royalty as Seonggol and the land as the territory related to past budda(前佛). This pride contributed much to unification war regardless of whether it was true or not.
However, He is known not to have clear recognition on Silla before liberation. However, it was confirmed through discussion up to now that his story collection is closely related to the feature of Silla culture. It is an urgent assignment to understand thoughts of intellectuals in the early 20th century including Choi Nam Seon on Korean traditional culture in depth.
