Music technology has emerged in a short period of time and has grown continuously, so its status in the 21st century music reality and its driving force in musicological research are already serious. In traditional musicology, wasn't the word 'skill' a concept that was only occasionally seen in performance techniques, composition techniques, etc.? As music was approached academically and the discipline established its own unique position and character, forming a group of scholars and their disciplines, music was conceptually recognized and approached as art from the beginning as an upright thing that created unique human creativity. There may have been objects that could be recognized as technology from the early stages of that trend, but there was no punishment for approaching them separately with the word technology. Beyond the first half of the 21st century, access to technology as an element within the world of music is now recognized as an unavoidable reality, but the world that is beginning to open before our eyes is enormous. Entering the 21st century, technological involvement in music has developed at an alarming speed and intensity, and the world opened up to a global environment has produced unprecedented results.
In this development, more than anything, the accumulated results of historical research in musicology have become monopolistic and are losing their vitality. Can we leave the reality as is, where the essence of ‘music-making humanity’ should have been ecologically and culturally diverse and healthy? Will we be able to face a problem that has been unsolved for a long time, a phenomenon that has been revealed as a chronic disease, and find a direction for healing using the methodology opened up by technology? As we become a global society, music is changing all over the world, and proactive researchers are responding to the changes, but the music industry is lagging behind due to lack of power to keep up with the changes. Still, what can be done? It seems that we have no choice but to look at the changes again from the usual system of musicology and expand our understanding. First of all, the questions that come to mind are how technology enters the world of music, what the resulting environment is, and how we can better solve and move forward with the problems we face with the progress and results of musicology armed with technology.
