일부 대학생의 외모만족도 및 자아존중감에 관한 조사연구 –경상북도 농어촌 지역을 중심으로 - (A Research on Appearance Satisfaction and Self-Esteem in University Students - Focused on Rural Areas in North Gyeongsang Province -)

초록

본 연구는 대학생의 외모만족도와 자아존중감에 대한 조사를 통해 자아존중감 강화를 위해 외모만족도에 대한 긍정적인 자기인식을 고려한 자가평가를 높이고, 대학생 스스로 지각하는 외모에 대한 만족도를 증가시킬 수 있는 교육프로그램개발에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 일부 농어촌 지역에 소재한 대학교의 재학생을 대상으로 2018년 7월부터 8월까지 외모만족도와 자아존중감에 대한 자기기입식 설문조사를 실시하였고, 설문작성이 미완성되거나 응답이 불분명한 자료를 제외한 총 625부의 설문지를 회수, 분석하였다. 설문 문항은 일반적 특성, 외모만족도, 자아존중감으로 구성하였다. 외모만족도와 자아존중감 측정 도구의 타당도를 알아보기 위해 상관행렬을 이용, 주축인자법을 이용한 탐색적 요인분석을 실시하였고, 측정 도구의 신뢰도를 알아보기 위하여 Cronbach’s α 방법을 이용하여 검정하였다.
외모만족도에서 성별은 신체매력과 외모만족도 전체에서 여자보다 남자가 높았고, 학년에서 신체조건, 신체매력, 전체 외모만족도에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 전공에서는 외모자신감, 신체조건, 신체매력과 전체 외모만족도에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 성적에 따라서는 신체조건과 외모만족도 전체에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 경제 수준에서는 신체조건만 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 신체조건은 중이 하보다 높았다. 자아존중감에서 성별은 긍정적 자아존중감과 부정적 자아존중감, 자아존중감 전체에서 여자보다 남자가 높았고, 학년에서는 긍정적 자아존중감, 부정적 자아존중감과 전체 자아존중감에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 성적에서는 긍정적 자아존중감, 자기존중과 전체 자아존중감에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 경제 수준에서는 긍정적 자아존중감과 전체 자아존중감에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 긍정적 자아존중감은 중이 하보다 높았고, 전체 자아존중감은 상과 중이 하보다 높았다. 외모만족도의 하위요인이 자아존중감에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하기 위한 다중선형회귀분석 결과 외모자신감이 많을수록, 신체조건이 많을수록, 신체자신감이 낮을수록 자아존중감이 높았다. 자아존중감 하위요인이 외모만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하기 위해 다중선형회귀분석 결과 부정적 자아존중감이 많을수록, 긍정적 자아존중감이 많을수록, 자기존중이 많을수록 외모만족도가 높았다.
이상의 결과 외모만족도와 자아존중감에 대한 조사를 통해 대학생 스스로 지각하는 외모에 대한 만족도를 높이고, 자아존중감을 향상시킬 수 있는 긍정적 자기인식과 관련한 상담 및 교육프로그램 개발을 바탕으로 시대적 흐름을 반영한 외모에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 더불어 자아존중감을 강화할 수 있는 체계적인 방안 모색이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate appearance satisfaction and self-esteem in university students and provide basic data necessary to develop education programs that could promote self-evaluation, taking into consideration positive self-awareness in appearance satisfaction, the pursuit of higher self-esteem, and to allow them to become more satisfied with their own appearance.; For this purpose, a self-administered survey on appearance satisfaction and self-esteem was conducted from July to August 2018 in university students in rural communities and a total of 625 questionnaires were analyzed, with the exception of incomplete ones and those having insincere answers. The questionnaire was composed of the items concerning the general characteristics, appearance satisfaction, and self-esteem. Exploratory factor analysis using a correlation matrix and principal factor analysis was performed to validate the appearance satisfaction and self-esteem scales, and Cronbach’s α was estimated for reliability of the scales.
As for romantic relationship satisfaction, men showed higher levels of physical attraction, appearance satisfaction, and appearance satisfaction in general than women; and the physical conditions, physical attraction, and appearance satisfaction in general differed statistically significantly by grade. Appearance confidence, physical conditions, physical attraction, and appearance satisfaction in general differed significantly by major; physical conditions and appearance satisfaction in general differed significantly by academic performance; and only physical conditions differed significantly by financial status, with the average financial level being related to better physical conditions than the lower financial levels. As for self-esteem, men showed higher levels of positive and negative self-esteem and self-esteem in general than women; positive and negative self-esteem and self-esteem in general differed significantly by grade; and positive and negative self-esteem and self-esteem in general differed significantly by academic performance. Positive self-esteem and self-esteem in general differed significantly by financial status: the students at the average financial level showed more positive self-esteem than those at the lower financial levels, and those at the average and higher financial levels showed better self-esteem in general than those at the lower financial levels. As for the effects of the sub-factors for appearance satisfaction on self-esteem, the multiple regression analysis found that the higher the level of appearance confidence, the higher level of physical conditions, and the lower the level of physical confidence, the higher the state of self-esteem. As for the effects of the sub-factors for self-esteem on appearance satisfaction, the multiple regression analysis found that the more the negative self-esteem, the more the positive self-esteem, and the higher level of self-esteem, coupled with a higher level of appearance satisfaction.
On the basis of these results, it is necessary to develop counseling and education programs related to positive self-awareness, which can help university students become more satisfied with their own appearance and improve their self-esteem. Through further research on appearance satisfaction and self-esteem, make systematic plans for improving self-esteem and positive awareness of appearance may be made reflecting contemporary society and mores.
