발라드 <명인 마놀레>의 구조적 분석과 모티프 (The Motif and Structural Analysis of the Ballad Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)>)

초록

아주 오래된 신화적 테마인 ‘건축의 희생’이 나타나는 발라드 <명인 마놀레>는 창조를 위한 예술적 희생에 대한 갈등으로부터 동기 유발되었다. 성, 사원, 다리 등의 건축에 있어서 늘 필수적으로 강요되는 희생의 문제는 루마니아나 발칸 국가들뿐만 아니라 고대로부터 전 시대, 전 유럽에 걸쳐 공통적으로 나타나는 민속학적 주제이다. 일정한 희생을 필수적으로 요구하는 이러한 서사시는 루마니아뿐만 아니라 남동유럽을 비롯하여 전 세계에 널리 분포되어 있다. 건축물은 성스러운 거소로서 ‘기념비적인 수도원’이어야 한다. <명인 마놀레>에서 ‘건축’은 사악한 기운이 스며들고 품위가 떨어지는 공간을 성스럽게 만듦으로서 더욱 더 성스러워질 수 있기 때문에 역설적으로 ‘버려진 미완의 건물터’가 수도원의 건축지로 정해진다. 하지만 낮 동안 쌓아올린 벽돌 더미는 밤만 되면 무너져 내렸다. 이 무너져 내리는 폐허의 이미지는 삶과 세계의 파멸을 의미하지만, 그 행위는 삶과 죽음이라는 순환과 반복의 소우주를 내포하고 있다. 결국 이러한 저주와 파멸은 이 건물터에 새로운 생명력과 영혼을 전이시켜야 하는 당위성을 확보하게 되고 결국 인신공희의 순간을 필연적으로 맞이하게 된다. 죽음으로 표현된 이 희생은 자연적이고 생물학적인 죽음이 아니라 영원한 생명력으로서의 전이를 의미한다. 결국 명인 마놀레의 아내 아나의 영혼은 건물(수도원)의 생명력과 불멸성 속으로 전이되어 진 것이다. 예술 작품의 창조를 위해서는 영혼이 전이되어야 하며, 이때 구현된 희생은 창조적 죽음이 된다. 죽음 후에는 ‘몸’이라는 육신이 아니라 건축물이라는 새로운 육신만이 남게 된다. 알렉산드리의 이형은 총 5장의 단락으로 구성되어 있는데 이는 마치 소설의 다섯 가지 구성단계인 ‘발단-전개-위기-절정-결말’과 대응된다. <명인 마놀레>의 서사전개는 1. 버려진 폐허의 선택 (I장: 1-64행), 2. 벽 쌓기와 계속되는 붕괴 (II장: 65-88행), 3. 꿈의 동기부여 (II장: 89-124행), 4. 벽 쌓기의 첫 희생여성 (III장: 125-189행), 5. 벽 쌓기 완성의 모티프 (IV장: 190-256행), 6. 영주와의 갈등 야기 (V장: 257-304행), 7. 이카루스 신화 모티프 (V장: 305-337행), 8. 우물의 모티프 (V장 338-343행)의 8가지의 모티프를 통해 서사단락이 완성된다. 발라드 <명인 마놀레>의 서사 단락에 나타난 묘사들의 이면에는 창조를 위한 희생의 신화에 대한 보다 깊은 이해가 요구된다. 첫째는 희생이나 대가없이 보다 지속적이고 가치 있는 작품을 실현하는 것은 불가능하다는 점, 둘째는 그 어떤 희생에도 굴복하지 않는 위대한 장인의 예술적 이상 실현이며, 마지막으로는 상징적 조형물에 대한 종교적 항구성의 재고이다. 또한 <명인 마놀레>는 성스러운 수도원의 건립이라는 ‘크리스트교적 외연’ 그리고 불멸의 사상과 인신공희 의식을 통한 ‘민간 신앙적 내연’이 내포되어 있는 작품이다. <명인 마놀레>는 성스러운 건축물의 완성을 위해 필연적으로 수반할 수밖에 없었던 종교적 외연과 내연의 구성을 통하여 종교적 상징과 의미 체계 속에서 크리스트교와 민간신앙이 루마니아인에게 어떻게 투영되어 있는지를 보여주는 대표적인 사례이다.

영어초록

The Ballad <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> based on the mythical theme "the sacrifice of architecture" is concerned with the conflictual motivation of the artistic sacrifice for the creation. The problem of the sacrifice which is necessary for the construction of the bridge, the fortress, the monastery, is the common theme and it is always found not only in Romania or the nations of Balkan Europe, but also in the world early from ancient times.
This architecture, as a holy place, must be the monumental monastery. The abandoned ground or the ruins would be the suitable place for the monastery because the architecture in the Ballad <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> is a work which makes the sinister place to the sanctum. But the monastery's walls kept tumbling every night during the construction. The image of the collapse means the destruction of the life and world, but in the mythical aspect this collapse contains a microcosm of the repetition and the circulation for the eternity. This cursed collapse caused Manole to pray to God for help, in order to continue his work. Through the dream, he realized that he could not finish the construction unless he sacrifices his own wife by walling her inside.
This sacrifice by death is not a biological death, but it means a transition for the eternal vitality. Accordingly, the spirit of the Manole's wife, Ana Perena, is transformed into the eternity and immortality of the architecture(monastery). The transition of the spirit is necessary for the creation of the divine art, and then that sacrifice become a creative death. After the death, it may remains not the body like the flesh but the body named the building.
Alecsandri's version <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> has five chapters which are very similar with the five kind composition phases of the novel as the beginning, the development, the crisis, the climax and the end. The unfolding of the description of the <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> is completed through eight motifs : the selection of the ruins for the construction (Chapter I, the line of verse 1-64), the walling and the repetition of the collapse (Chapter II, 65-88), the motivation through the dream (Chapter II, 89-124), the first sacrifice of a woman for the walling (Chapter III, 125-189), the completion of the building (Chapter IV, 190-256), the conflict with the lord (Chapter V, 257-304), the motif of the Icarus' myth (Chapter V, 305-337) and the motif of the well (Chapter V, 338-343).
To better understand the inside of the depictions appeared in the <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> it is necessary some knowledge about the myth of the sacrifice for a creation. Firstly, it is impossible to realize an divine and eternal art without any sacrifice or cost, the second is the ideal realization of the artisan spirit, not submitting to any sacrifice and the final is the reconsidering of the religious eternity about the symbolical statue. Besides, the <Meşterul Manole (the Master builder Manole)> had both the external figure of the Christianity as the construction of the holy monastery and the internal figure of the popular belief through the rite of the human sacrifice and the ideology of the immorality.
