초록

본 연구는 한강이 『소년이 온다』(2014) 이후에 3년씩의 시차를 두고 발표한 세 편의 작품[<눈 한 송이가 녹는 동안>(2015), <작별>(2018), 『작별하지 않는다』(2021)]이 지니는 두 가지 차원의 독특한 메타텍스트성에 주목한다. 우선, 이 세 작품은 한강의 이전 작품에서 시도된 적 없는 메타 서사의 양상을 보인다. 작가 한강을 지칭하는 것으로 이해되는 소설가 화자가 등장하고 극중극의 명칭이 해당 작품명이 되는 등, 픽션과 리얼리티의 경계를 드러낸다. 이러한 구성은 한강이 『소년이 온다』 이후 경험한 ‘고통의 재현’에 대한 한계와 고뇌에 맞서 작가 정체성을 재정립하려는 시도로 이해된다. 따라서 본 연구는 이 세 작품을 창작자의 ‘재현의 고통’에 관한 서사로 보고, 작가 정체성의 재정립 과정을 ‘주체의 역설적 수동성’이라는 들뢰즈의 존재론을 중심으로 추적한다. 고통을 재현하는 작가로서의 한계에 직면한 작중 소설가가 불가항력적인 ‘고통에의 참여’라는 ‘주체의 역설적 수동성’을 작가 정체성으로 재정립하는 면모를 고찰한다. 여기서 ‘주체의 역설적 수동성’이란 고통과 상처로 얼룩진 과거 역사가 새로운 방향으로 나아갈 수 있는 이유를 특별히 주체의 수동성 차원에서 가능하다고 본 관점을 의미한다. 수동성은 무기력함이나 자포자기가 아니라 자신이 타인의 도구로 사용될 수 있도록 내어 맡길 때 실재화되지 못했던 자신의 모습을 되찾게 된다는 역설로서, 작중 인물들이 처하는 불가항력적인 선택과 고통의 상황이 치유와 생성의 미래를 예고한다는 의미이다.
그 다음으로 주목한 양상은, 이 세 작품이 연작으로 발표되지 않았고 작중 인물도 공통되지 않지만, 작품의 구성 상 연작으로 간주할 수밖에 없는 해석의 의존성과 연계성을 보인다는 점이다. 세 개의 텍스트들이 서로 넘나들면서 새롭게 재구성되는 텍스트 간 순환적인 의미화 작업을 검토하며 폭력의 역사에 대한 치유의 가능성이 구조적으로 형상화되는 지점을 분석한다. 특히 먼저 발표된 선행 텍스트 <작별>이 이후에 발표된 후행 텍스트 『작별하지 않는다』에 의해 그 잠재해 있는 의미가 발굴되고, 이렇게 해서 변화된 ｢작별｣의 주제 의식이 다시 『작별하지 않는다』의 메시지를 강화하는 양상은, 현재의 사유와 발화가 시간을 거슬러 과거를 변화시키고 재구성하며 미래로 나아가는 치유의 역사의식을 드러낸다고 보았다.
일명 ‘눈 3부작’으로 칭할 만한 이 세 작품을 긴밀한 연계성 속에서 고찰하는 본 연구는, 이 세 작품이 개별적이고 단편적으로 연구될 경우 발생하는 의미의 왜곡 및 가치 평가의 오류를 극복하고, 한강이 새롭게 시도하는 메타 서사와 상호텍스트성을 역사적 폭력에 대항하는 치유의 서사로 자리매김하는 의의를 갖는다.

영어초록

After the novel “Human Acts” was published in 2014, novelist Han Gang has put out three novels, with three year interval respectively, “While a Snowflake Melts” in 2015, “Farewell” in 2018, “Impossible farewell(Impossibles Adieux)” in 2021. This study takes notice of two-faceted unique metatextuality that makes possible congruous understanding of the three novels and gives the perspective to see the three novels as a novel series.
Firstly, these three novels share metatextuality that Han Gang did not use actively in her foregoing novels. These are some features of such metatextuality. A narrator exists, who is a novelist in Han Gang’s novel and can be viewed as Han Gang herself. The title of a novel is the same as the title of a work in the novel. These characteristics provide space where the line between fact and fiction becomes blurred. The metatextuality can be seen as a try to reconstruct identity as a novelist by encompassing the pain and the limitation which Han Gang likely met in the endeavor to represent real life sufferings retrospectively after the novel, “Human Acts” publication. Therefore, this study sees the three novels from the same vantage point as the narratives about the pain of posterior manifestation of actual sufferings and delves into the arc in which the identity as a novelist is being formed using the concept, ‘ironic passivity of subject’ stemming from Gilles Deleuze’s ontology. A novelist character in Hang Gang’s novel comes across a situation where there is no choice but to partake in the pains unavoidably. This compulsory situation makes ‘ironic passivity of subject’ and through the ‘ironic passivity of subject’ novelist identity is formed. This study digs into such novelist identity making process. The ‘ironic passivity of subject’ is the standpoint that the answer for how pain-ridden history can be lead toward new direction is attainable especially in ‘ironic passivity of subject’ dimension. Passivity means not to get unnerved or to abandon oneself but that ironically, when one gives oneself loosely in order to be used by other people as some apparatus, one can find her or his own latent trait. Passivity also means that the situation where compulsory painful choices and sufferings exist foreshadows the future where remedy and revival come.
Secondly, albeit three novels are not published as a novel series and have no common characters, clear and wholesome understanding of each novel requires intertextual and juxtapositional interpretation. Therefore, three novels can be viewed as a novel series and should be read like a novel series for appropriate comprehension. Doing three-novel-wide research, this study finds intertextuality of three novels, catches feedback meanings of texts across three novels and investigates the point where the possibility of cure for suffering-ridden history can be made structurally concrete. Especially, the latent meanings of foregoing novel “Farewell” are exhumed by following novel “Impossible farewell(Impossibles Adieux)” and newly-viewed theme of foregoing novel “Farewell” reinforces the message of following novel “Impossible farewell(Impossibles Adieux)”. Such feedback feature exhibits the remedial viewpoint of history that thoughts and discourses in present change and reconstruct pasts retroactively and provide propelling force toward future.
This study analyzes three novels, which can be treated as a novel series, namely ‘snow series of three novels’, with the perspective of close intertextuality of each novel. This study overcomes distorted understanding and flawed evaluation of Han Gang’s novels that can take place when the novels are examined separately and individually and sets Han Gang’s newly tried metatextuality and intertextuality as the narrative of healing confronting historical violence.
