조선후기 상층가문의 성(性)문화와 ‘연애’의 발견 －<하진양문록>을 중심으로－ (Sex culture of the upper-class families of the late Chosun Dynasty and Discovery of ‘Love’ －focusing on －)

초록

본고는 18세기 말에서 19세기 사이에 창작되었으며 상층 여성들을 주독자층으로 향유되었던 <하진양문록>을 중심으로 ‘연애’의 관점에서 남녀관계의 새로운 움직임을 포착하고 그 의미를 고찰하였다.
첫째로 이 작품은 혼전의 남녀라는 새로운 ‘관계’와 사랑이 싹트는 ‘과정’을 형상화함으로써 전근대 시기의 중매혼으로 대표되는 전형적인 결연과는 다른 개념의 남녀관계를 제시하고 있다. 둘째로 남녀 간 연애의 ‘장면화’에 공을 들인다. 교제가 이루어지는 구체적 시공간과 그 안에서의 감정 변화를 장면화함으로써 ‘연애’라는 새로운 개념과 형식을 생생히 재현해내고 있다. 셋째로 과감한 신체적 접촉 묘사를 들 수 있다. 이는 애정을 영육을 아우르는 것으로 인정한다는 점에서 중요하다.
<하진양문록> 역시 남녀관계에서 수동적 여주인공의 형상화, 일부다처의 상황 등 국문장편소설의 보수적 성 인식으로부터 자유롭지 못하다. 그러나 이 작품이 많은 분량을 할애하여 혼전 연애에 해당하는 서사를 그리는 것은 국문장편의 일반적인 모습과는 차별화되는 새로운 시도로서 주목될 만하다. 혼전의 교감을 꿈꾸는 연애의 형상화에는 주향유층이었던 상층 여성들의 욕망이 반영되었다고 보인다. 연애 과정에 내포된 ‘자유’와 ‘知己’에 대한 열망은 성 차별적 가부장제 사회에서 남존여비의 관계를 거부하는 여성적 주체성과 관계된다.
더불어 이 작품이 대중적 독서물로서 통속적 서사 전략을 고민한 작품이라는 점도 중요하다. 당대의 윤리 규범을 크게 이탈하지 않으면서도 허용 가능한 범위 내에서 성적 욕망을 실현할 수 있게 하는 장치로서 정혼자 간의 연애라는 방법을 고안하였으며 상층 남녀의 연애를 가능케 하기 위해 남장이라는 복장전환화소를 활용하고 있다. 이처럼 대중적 인기를 끌었던 소설들에서 복장전환화소를 통해 남녀의 만남을 그리는 내용이 빈번히 등장하는 것은 이러한 장치를 통해서나마 연애의 감성을 경험하고 싶었던 당대 향유층의 보편적 욕망이 반영된 것이라고 하겠다.

영어초록

This thesis captures the new movement of the relationships between the sexes in the point of ‘dating’ and examines the meaning of it by focusing on <HaJinYangMoonRok>, which was mainly enjoyed by upper-class women during the late 18c to 19c.
First, premarital datings and the process of emotional exchanges of the main characters are intensively described in this work. It suggests divergent sex relationship compared to the traditional marriages by arrangement, through forming the new premarital ‘relationships’ and the ‘process’ of falling in love. Second, it provides elaborate ‘scenes’ of the dating between woman and man. By describing specific environments of the love scenes and the emotional changes of the main characters, it reconstructs a new idea and form of ‘dating’. Third, there is the description of physical contacts. This is significant since it indicates the acceptation of the relationship of body and soul as the expression of love.
Due to the imagery of passive heroin and the polygamic situation, <HaJinYangMoonRok> is not free from the conservative sexual perception in common with other Korean Classical Long Novels. However, it is notable since this work is differentiated from the general Korean Classical Long Novels by vividly depicting the dating before marriage. It seems to reflect the desire of the upper-class women, who were the main reader of the book, to communicate with their lover before getting married. Their longing for ‘freedom’ and ‘equal relationship’ during the dating process is connected with feminine independence that resists the idea of predominance of men over women in a misogynistic patriarchal system.
Moreover, it is crucial that conventional narration strategy as a popular reading is considered in this piece. It suggested datings with fiancé as a literary device that fulfills the sexual desire of the women within acceptable tolerances that doesn’t break away far from the norms of the society. Furthermore, it uses the dress-changing motif, which is female dressing in male attire, to enable the dating between upper-class women and men. The common appearance of the dress-changing motif in popular novels of the time is the reflection of the desire of the readers to experience romantic feelings of dating via this literary device.
