북한 녹족부인 서사의 원형과 변형 - 친자 탐색 공간을 중심으로 (A Study on the Original Form and Modification in Nokjokbuin Narratives of North Korea ― focused on Biological Son Exploration Space)

초록

본고는 북한 녹족부인 서사의 ‘친자 탐색 공간’을 중심으로 그 변이 양상을 고찰하였다. 녹족부인 서사는 조선 시대부터 오늘에 이르기까지의 각편들이 보여 주는 변이 양상에 대한 비교를 가능하게 해서 그 변이가 추동하고 있는 서사적 특징과 의미를 뚜렷하게 드러내는 자료로서의 의의가 크다. 북한 녹족부인 서사의 친자 탐색 공간이 보여주는 변이 양상은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 신화적 공간에서 역사적 공간으로의 변이다. 조선 시대와 일제 강점기의 녹족부인 서사들이 구현하고 있는 친자 탐색 공간은 들판, 산봉우리, 언덕, 산, 평야, 노루대라는 높은 곳 등이다. 이와 같은 친자 탐색 공간에서 돋보이는 것은 녹족부인의 신이성이다. 녹족부인이 지니고 있는 반인반수 존재로서의 정체성이 펼쳐지는 친자 탐색 공간은 대지모신으로서 녹족부인의 신격이 발현되는 신화적 공간이었다. 그러나 남북한 분단 이후 북한의 녹족부인 서사 자료들은 녹족부인의 신격, 그리고 서사 내용의 가장 극적 순간을 이루는 부분인 친자 확인 장면의 신화적 환상성이 사라지고 역사적 공간만이 남은 텍스트라는 유사점을 지니고 있다.
둘째, 지리적 공간에서 이념적 공간으로의 변이다. 남북한 분단 이전의 녹족 부인 서사에서 친자 탐색 공간은 대부분 지리상의 실제 공간을 호명한다. 그 곳은 모자 재회가 이루어지는 장소인 동시에 유적·지명의 유래를 낳는 현장이다.
이러한 지리적 공간에 대한 호명이 북한의 녹족부인 서사에서는 대부분 ‘적진’ 또는 ‘민병(의병) 부대’ 진지로 바뀜과 아울러 많은 각편들이 유적·지명 유래와 관련된 내용을 포함하고 있지 않은 텍스트가 되었다. 북한의 녹족부인 서사들은 향토 전설로서 보유해 온 지리적 공간을 외세 침략에 대항하는 애국투쟁의 이념적 공간으로 대체하고 있다는 점에 변이적 특징을 지니는 것이다.
이와 같이 녹족부인 서사의 변이를 추동한 원인이 무엇인가를 찾고자 할 때는 북한 정권 초기에 당의 정치 강령과 연계된 문예 인식 및 정책이 주목된다. 북한 정권 초기에 이루어진 김일성의 문예 지도사업으로 볼 때 민족문학 텍스트는 이른바 ‘평화적민주건설시기’로 불리는 1940년대 후반기부터 이미 당의 강령을 추종한 각색 및 변개 상황에 직면하게 되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 남북한 분단이 지속되면서 남북한간에는 정치·경제·사회·문화의 모든 측면에서 이질화가 심화되어 왔다. 민중이 즐겨 듣고 말하는 ‘이야기’도 같은 상황에 놓여 있다. 북한 녹족부인 서사의 변개에는 북한 사회라는 특수한 여건이 반영되어 있기 마련이 므로 우리는 이를 통해 북한의 문예 현실을 인식할 수 있으며, 이러한 인식은 북한 사회에 대한 이해를 견인하게 될 것이다. 북한 녹족부인 서사의 존재 양상을 통해 확인할 수 있는 북한 문예의 현실에 대한 이해가 남북한 분단으로 심화된 대립과 갈등의 국면을 극복하는 논리의 단초가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This study was intended to consider the changing patterns in Nokjokbuin narrative of North Korea which was centered around biological son exploration space. Nokjokbuin narrative allows comparison related to the changing patterns shown by each edition covering the period from Joseon Dynasty to contemporary times, revealing the characteristics of narratives and their meaning that reflect such changes. The biological son exploration space in North Korea’s Nokjokbuin narrative provides insight into the changing patterns as explained below.
First, mystical space is transformed into historic space. The biological son exploration space appearing in Nokjokbuin narrative during Joseon Dynasty and Japanese colonial rule was unfolded in high places such as the peak of mountain, hill, mountain, watchtower, and fields. The deity-human reason characteristics of Nokjokbuin is highlighted in such biological son exploration space. The space for biological son exploration, in which the identity of the 'half human and half beast' Nokjokbuin is revealed, is transformed into a mystical space where the sanctitude of Nokjokbuin as the 'mother god of great land' is manifested. Materials related to Nokjokbuin narrative are commonly the texts that preserve only historic space without mystical fantasy of scene showing the moment of identifying biological son which forms the most dramatic part of story and sanctitude of Nokjokbuin who is half human and half beast.
Second, geographic space is transformed into ideological space.
The space for search of biological son mostly referred to real space geographically before the division of country into two Koreas. Such place represents the site of reunion between mother and son and also the origin of historic relics and toponym. The titles for such geographic space were mostly revised to enemy base or militia troop base in North Korea's Nokjokbuin narrative after division of the country into South Korea and North Korea, and at the same time, became the texts that do not contain details related to origin of historic relics and toponym in each edition.
North Korea’s Nokjokbuin narratives have shown variation reflecting the tendency of replacing geographic space, retained as folk legend, with ideological space for patriotic struggle against foreign invasion.
The literature awareness and policies linked to political platform of the party at the incipient stage of North Korean regime becomes the focus when we attempt to identify the driving force behind the changes in Nokjokbuin narrative as described above. Based on literature policy of Kim Il-sung at the early part of North Korean regime, ethnic literature texts have been adopted and modified to uphold the party's platform and doctrines since mid-to-late 1940s.
As the division of Korea into South Korea and North Korea continues, South Korea and North Korea have been experiencing aggravating estrangement in all aspects including political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. It is the same case with ‘stories’ which the pubic enjoy listening to and talking about. The changing patterns of North Korea’s Nokjokbuin narrative reflects special circumstances of North Korean society and can provide a prism through which we can perceive the reality of North Korea’s narrative. This perception will help boost understanding of North Korean society. The recognition of the reality of North Korean narratives will help increase understanding of North Korean narrative and North Korean society.
