『惕齋自述』과 『惕齋屛居錄』에 대한 일고찰 -薑山 李書九의 삶과 정치 행적을 중심으로 (A Study on Ch'ŏkchaejasul(『惕齋自述』) and Ch'ŏkchaebyŏnggŏrok(『惕齋屛居錄』) - Focusing on the life and political activities of Kangsan(薑山) Lee, Sŏgu(李書九))

초록

본고는 『薑山全書』(성균관대 대동문화연구원, 2005)에 수록된 『惕齋自述』과 『惕齋屛居錄』의 특징적 면모를 먼저 살펴보고, 이후 두 편의 작품을 통해 薑山 李書九(1754∼1825)가 자신을 형상화한 양상을 조망한 결과물이다. 『척재자술』과 『척재병거록』은 이서구의 인간적 면모와 함께 현실 정치에서의 솔직한 정감 등의 날것 그대로를 담고 있는 자료다. 이러한 기록은 ‘조선왕조실록’이나 『일성록』 등에는 존재하지 않는 정보로 이서구와 정조와의 관계 및 정치적 입장을 살펴볼 수 있어 주목할 만하다. 이서구에 대한 외부의 시선과 자술한 관점이 일면 접하는 부분이 있으나 다소 다른 결로 존재한다는 사실을 확인하였다.
이들 자료를 통해 다음 몇 가지 사실을 새롭게 확인할 수 있다. 먼저 이서구와 정조의 관계가 지금까지 학계에 알려진 사실보다 훨씬 농밀했음을 알 수 있다. 이는 이서구가 정조의 특별한 知遇를 받았던 일화 등에서 산견된다. 예컨대 정조와 이서구는 부자간의 관계 양태와 유사한 면모를 보이기도 하는데, 정조는 이서구의 합당하지 않은 처사에 대해서는 꾸짖으며 서운함을 표출하였고, 용인할 수 있는 실수에 대해서는 위로하고 타이르며 관용을 베푸는 모습도 보여주었다. 또한 이서구는 이들 기록에 壯勇營을 혁파할 수밖에 없었던 정황을 자세하게 기록하여, 노론 벽파계의 핵심 관료들이 적극적으로 관철시켰던 과정을 파악할 수 있었다. 이 밖에도 학문적 성취와 자부, 학문을 그만두고 관직 생활을 했어야만 했던 외부적 상황에 대한 자기 고백과 변명, 현실에서 기인한 체념적 상황과 자신의 정치 철학에 대한 변명 등이 기록되어 이서구의 진솔한 내면세계를 증언해주고 있다.
이서구는 그간 ‘四家’, ‘벽파’라는 집합으로 묶여 시인으로서의 면모는 물론 그 이외의 역량과 모습을 제대로 간취되지 못하였다. 하지만 『척재자술』, 『척재병거록』 등의 저술을 검토한 결과 시인으로서의 능력을 비롯하여 산문은 물론 당대 관료로서의 행정 능력과 정치적 역량도 상당했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이서구는 시와 산문은 물론 정치적 역량을 겸한 독특한 인물이었다. 그런 점에서 경술과 정치를 겸한 그의 문학적 성취는 단순한 문학가의 성과와는 상당히 다른 바 있다.

영어초록

This thesis first examines the distinctive features of Ch'ŏkchaejasul(『惕齋自述』) and Ch'ŏkchaebyŏnggŏrok(『惕齋屛居錄』) included in The Complete Works of Kangsan(『薑山全書』). Subsequently, the study explores the visual representation of Kangsan(薑山) Lee, Sŏgu(李書九) shaping his own identity through an analysis of these two works. Ch'ŏkchaejasul and Ch'ŏkchaebyŏnggŏrok capture the raw essence of Lee, Sŏgu's human aspects and candid sentiments in real-world politics. Such records provide noteworthy insights into the relationship between Lee Sŏgu and King Chŏngjo, as well as Lee Sŏgu's political stance, information not found in sources like the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) or the Records of Daily Reflections(『日省錄』). While external perspectives on Lee, Sŏgu may intersect with self-narrated viewpoints, it has been confirmed that there are somewhat divergent outcomes.
Through these materials, several new facts can be newly confirmed. Firstly, it can be observed that the relationship between Lee Sŏgu and King Chŏngjo was much more intimate than previously known in academia. This is evidenced by episodes such as Lee, Sŏgu receiving special favor from King Chŏngjo. For instance, King Chŏngjo and Lee, Sŏgu exhibit similarities in their relationship akin to that of father and son. King Chŏngjo expressed dissatisfaction and disappointment with Lee, Sŏgu's inappropriate conduct, admonishing him. However, in the case of forgivable mistakes, the king demonstrated a forgiving and compassionate attitude, offering comfort and understanding. Furthermore, Lee, Sŏgu meticulously documented the circumstances that compelled him to dismantle the Changyongyeong(壯勇營). This detailed account allows us to comprehend the active involvement of key officials in the reform process within the conservative faction(僻派, Byeokpa) of the bureaucracy. In addition, Lee, Sŏgu's sincere inner world is revealed through confessions and justifications regarding external circumstances that compelled him to abandon scholarly pursuits and engage in official duties. His self-reflections also touch upon resignation prompted by pragmatic situations and justifications for his political philosophy, providing a testament to his genuine introspection.
Until now, Lee, Sŏgu, grouped under the collective terms 'Saga(四家)' and 'Byeokpa(僻派)' has not been fully recognized for his abilities and attributes beyond his role as a poet. However, upon reviewing works such as Ch'ŏkchaejasul and Ch'ŏkchaebyŏnggŏrok, it has been confirmed that Lee, Sŏgu possessed not only poetic abilities but also considerable prose, administrative skills as a contemporary bureaucrat, and political competence. Lee, Sŏgu was a unique figure who combined the realms of poetry, prose, and political prowess. In this regard, his literary achievements, combining artistry and politics, differ significantly from the mere accomplishments of a literary figure.
