조정래의 <아리랑>과 莫言의 <紅高粱家族>에 나타난 탈식민지적 크로노토프 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of postcolonial chronotopeon between Jo Jung-rae's and Moyan's )

초록

본고는 조정래의 <아리랑>과 중국 작가 모옌의 <紅高梁家族>에 나타난 탈식민지적 크로노토프를 비교 연구하고자 하였다. <아리랑>에 나타나는 ‘평야’의 크로노토프는 당시 한반도의 위기를 재현한다. 이에 민중들의 항일투쟁은 ‘산악지대’나 ‘동굴’ 등지에서 이어나갔다.
당대 김제평야를 중심으로 생산된 크로노토프는 한반도 농민과 노동자에게 위기로 작용하였고 더불어 민중항쟁의 요지로 작용하였다. 더불어 조선민중들의 식민지배자를 향한 투쟁과 증오와 복수심을 생산하는 본격적인 항일투쟁의 시공간이기도 하였다. 여기에는 ‘민족혼’을 바탕으로 ‘아리랑’적 정서가 작용하였고 이는 한반도 민중의 상상적 공동체로서의 연대감을 생성하고 항일투쟁의지를 강화하는 요소로 작용한다. 특히 ‘아리랑’으로 이어지는 ‘노랫말 잇기’ 는 조선의병들을 화합과 염원 그리고 미래로 인도하는 상상적 공동체의 원천으로 작용한다.
반면 莫言의〈紅高梁家族〉은 텍스트를 전체적으로 지배하고 있는 ‘붉은 수수밭’ 크로노토프를 통하여 이 지방 민중들의 정서를 상징적으로 드러내고 있다. 특히 둥베이 향촌의 상징인 ‘붉은 수수밭’은 일본 침략 시 수없이 죽어간 민중들의 시체가 그곳에 매장된 장소라는 점에서 마을 민중들의 상상적 공동체의 원천으로 작용하고 있다. 이런 의미에 ‘붉은 수수’는 그들 민중의 꺼지지 않는 투쟁과 의지의 상징이다. 더불어 둥베이 향촌은 그들 민중의 되돌아갈어떤 상상적 공동체의 현존이다. 일제 침략 시 ‘붉은 수수밭’은 그들 민중에게 위기의 크로노토프로 작용하기도 했지만 ‘수숫대’에 몸을 숨김으로써 매복전을 가능하게 했다는 점에서 적의 사기를 떨어뜨리고 방해하는 교전도구로 가능했다.
이에 두 민족이 지향하는 민중성이나 민족주의 개념은 다르게 나타난다. 김제평야를 중심으로 하는 <아리랑>은 근대성에 기반한 새로운 주권주의적 민족주의가 태동되고 있는 반면, <紅高梁家族>에 등장하는 둥베이 향촌은 원초적 시공간 지향으로서의 전통적 민족주의를 내재하고 있었다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper was to comparative study of postcolonial chronotope shown in Jo Jung-rae's <Arirang> and Moyan's <Red Sorghum Clan>. <Arirang> shows the rally of national spirit resisting the Japanese imperialism centering around people in the Japanese colonial era, their bloody struggle and national soul.
While Arirang shows that the essence of public narration resisting cruelty of the Japanese army is the pulse of ‘Arirang’, <Red Sorghum Clan>shows that the ‘red sorghum’ is impregnated with the public souls resisting the Japanese army and bleeding to death. The chronotope of ‘plain’ in <Arirang>reconstructs the crisis on the Korean Peninsula at that time as it is. People continue to fight against the Japanese imperialism in a ‘mountainous area’ or ‘caves’. It is considered that the chronotope focusing the Gimje plain of the time causes a crisis to farmers and workers in the Korean Peninsula and then influences the popular revolt. In addition, this is also a space-time of full-fledged ‘anti-Japanese struggle’ stirring up the Korean people's struggle against colonial rulers, animosity and revenge. It is affected by emotion of ‘Arirang’ based on their ‘national soul’ and influences in creating the feeling of solidarity as an imaginary community of the Korean people and reinforcing the anti-Japanese struggle. In particular, ‘singing on’ of ‘Arirang’ plays a role as the source of imaginary community leading the Korean army to harmony, aspiration and future.
On the other hand, <Red Sorghum Clan> symbolically shows the emotion of people in this region (Dongbei) by chronotope of ‘sorghum furrow’ dominating in the text. In particular, ‘red sorghum farm’ as the symbol of ‘the country village, Dongbei’ plays a role as the source of imaginary community to village people because it is the place that the corpses of many dead people during Japanese invasion were buried. In this meaning, ‘red sorghum’ is a symbol of the Chinese people's perpetual struggle and will. In addition, ‘the country village, Dongbei’ is a certain existence of their reversionary imaginary community. During the Japanese invasion, whereas ‘red sorghum farm’ is their critical chronotope, it is also a weapon depressing the enemy's morale and interfering with it because the farm make the ambush operations possible as the people hide in ‘red sorghum stalks’.
In conclusion, the concepts of mass characteristics or nationalism for two nations are different. While <Arirang>, focusing the Gimje plain, shows the start of new sovereign nationalism based on modernity, ‘the country village, Dongbei’ in <Red Sorghum Clan>contains the traditional nationalism for orientation to a basic space-time.
