초록

『Maegukno(Traitor to the Country)』 takes the form of a detective novel, and it is one of the “counter-espionage novels” that publicize the mode of life based on the all-out war system. ‘Counter-espionage’ is one of the ways for you to play roles as the subject of war regardless of whether you are one of the people in the back or soldiers in the front. After the China-Japan War, the Japanese Empire came up with a genuine form of detective novels having as its narrative structure the observation and logical inference as a way to deliver the people in the back of Chosun scientific knowledge about war in the all-out war system during the war. In this sense, Japanese detective novels developed in a way to deal with human pathological mind and psychological state were excluded from the reading for sound people whereas the detective novels of colonized Chosun were permitted to be read as entertainment for people as being focused on scientific evidences and the process of inference and restricted to the contents of digging up spies. In this situation, Kim Nae Seong’s 『Maegukno』 was the one and only novel that appeared with the title of “a counter-espionage novel” as the one that faithfully delivered such things as scientific knowledge and the codes of conduct in the area of counter-espionage, and it is the work that best shows the mode that the detective novels of Chosun were used for the all-out war system. This article examines why detective novels were called as a tool to promote national policy in the process that the Japanese Empire were redefining the utility of literature to build the all-out war system through Kim Nae Seong’s 『Maegukno』 and also analyzes its contents about the consciousness of ‘counter-espionage’ which Gyeongseong citizens, the readers of 『Maegukno』 and the background of it, were forced to have then.
