임진왜란 거북선의 전·후진 노 젓기와 화포사용을 위한 방패의 구조 (Oarage in Forward and Backward and Structure of Shield for Use of Cannon in the Turtle Ship of the Imjin War)

초록

‘거북선은 사방으로 포를 쏠 수 있고 전후좌우로 이동하는 것이 나는 것처럼 빨랐다.’는 임진왜란 당시의 기록에 의하면 이순신의 거북선은 노를 저어 모든 방향으로 이동이 가능하며 동시에 화포와 활을 쏠 수 있는 돌격선의 구조를 갖추고 있다. 밀려드는 왜선과 왜군의 적진 속에서 거북선은 어떻게 전후좌우로 노를 저어 신속하게 이동하고 화포와 활을 쏠 수 있었는지 내부구조에 대한 연구는 돌격선의 구조와 독창적인 이순신 해상전투의 전략과 전술을 설명할 수 있는 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
그동안 임진왜란 거북선에 대한 학문적 연구는 2층 구조인지, 3층 구조인지 층수에 대한 논쟁의 연속이었지 내부구조에 대한 학문적 연구는 거의 전무했다고 볼 수 있다. 최근 임진왜란과 1795년『이충무공전서』에 기록된 거북선의 연구를 통해 거북선은 3층 구조라는 이론적 근거들이 발표되면서 정설은 3층 구조로 굳어지는 양상이다.
문헌에 기록되어있는 거북선의 후진에 대한 연구는 2005년 학자가 아닌 민간인 거북선 연구자에 의해 거북선 모형으로 후진의 원리가 발표되었다. 그 원리는 멍에 모서리에 노를 위치시키는 전통방식이 아닌 멍에와 멍에사이의 중간지점에 노를 위치시키는 방식으로 문헌의 기록처럼 거북선의 전·후진이 가능했지만 본 연구를 통해서 같은 공간에서 노 젓기와 동시에 화포와 활쏘기의 임무를 수행하기에는 어려운 구조로 분석되었다. 본 연구에서는 문헌에 나타난 임진왜란 해전의 거북선 기록과 거북선 내부를 3D 컴퓨터그래픽 시뮬레이션 연구방법으로 3층 구조의 거북선에서 2층에서의 노 젓기와 화포, 활의 사용이 가능한 노창과 방패의 포구멍에 대한 연구결과를 도출하였으며, 현재 복원되어있는 거북선 모형들은 노를 저어 전후좌우 이동과 동시에 화포와 활을 사용할 수 없는 구조로 복원되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

According to the record at the time of the Imjin War stating that "The Turtle Ship could fire guns in all directions and was quick when moving as if it flew," the Turtle Ship of admiral Yi Sun-shin had the structure of an assault ship which could adjust itself in all directions by oaring and fire guns and shoot arrows at the same time. Study on the internal structure of the Turtle Ship to investigate how the ship could move in every direction and fire guns and shoot arrows amidst of surging Japanese ships and in the enemy lines has an important significance because it can explain the structure of assault ships and strategies and tactics of unique naval combats of admiral Yi Sun-shin. Academic researches on the Turtle Ship have focused on the number of floors whether it was a two-story structure or a three-story structure and there was no academic research on internal structure of the ship. As theoretic grounds for the Turtle Ship's three-story structure were recently announced through the study on the Turtle Ship recorded during Imjin War and in the「The Yi-choongmugong Complete Book」in 1795, the three-story structure is being widely accepted.
As for the studies on the reverse of the Turtle Ship recorded in literature, the principle of the reverse of the ship was announced through the Turtle Ship model studied by a civilian researcher in 2005, not by a scholar. It was a way of positioning oars in a halfway point between wooden crosspieces, not a traditional way of positioning oars in the edge of wooden crosspieces. Although advance and reverse of the Turtle Ship were possible under the principle as shown in literatures, it is interpreted to be difficult to conduct oarage and firing/shooting guns and arrows at the same time with the structure of the ship under the principle. In the present study, through the record of the Turtle Ship in the naval battle of the Imjin War and 3D computer graphic simulation study method for inside of the Turtle Ship, study results about oarage in the second floor and oar windows where cannon and arrow are usable and cannon holes in the three-story structure of the Turtle Ship were deduced. In addition, all current Turtle Ship models were confirmed to have been restored as a structure that cannot use cannon and arrow at the same time moving in every direction.
