문화체험과 에스노그래피의 정치학: 식민지 시대 서구지역 기행문 연구 (The Politics of Cultural Experience and Ethnography-study of the Colonial travel writing on the West)

초록

본고는 식민지 시대의 서구여행기를, 실제의 여행 경험과 그것에 대해 글쓰기(표상)화되어 만들어진 ‘서구’, 그 표상과정 속에 동시적으로 축조되는 자기상(identity, self-image)의 관점에서 보았다.
식민지 시대 서구 지역 기행문은 1)1920년대 초반 유학생이나 여행객의 실제 ‘여로’를 중심으로 한 장편 연재 기행문 2)1920년대 중반 이후 신문 및 잡지 연재되는 미국중심의 ‘고학체험’ 기행문, 3)1920년대 후반 이후 특정 지역에서의 개인의 ‘문화체험’을 특화하는 기행문 4)동아일보, 조선일보 등에서 미국, 러시아 등의 정치적 행사에 파견된 필자들의 장편 연재 기행문으로 분류할 수 있다. 본고는 이중 세 번째의 ‘1920년대 후반 이후 특정 지역에서의 개인의 ‘문화체험’을 특화하는 기행문‘을 중심으로 논했다.
분석의 과정에서 기행문이라는 글쓰기를 ‘개인의 실증적 체험을 쓰는 글쓰기’라는 조건이 만들어내는 ‘특정한 표상 주조의 방식’의 관점에서 내부적으로 분석하는 방식을 취했다. 그 특정한 표상주조의 방식은 1)공간(장소)와 주체의 관계 형식 2)기행문 글쓰기의 내러티브를 구성하는 시간인식 3)이를 통해 드러나는 글쓰기 형식과 미디어의 관계, 그리고 이를 통해 궁극적으로 4)기행문의 서술 주체가 한국근대의 주체상과 어떻게 조응하는가를 살펴보았다.
이를 통해 이 부류 기행문에는 서구를 개인적인 특이 체험 중심으로 기술하거나, 서구의 이질적인 지역에 대한 에스노그래피적 접근, 혹은 서구의 일상문화에서의 축제 체험 등을 서술하는 양상을 살펴보았다, 그리고 이를 귀속공동체와의 분리를 통해 개인을 형성하고, 그 개인이 소비자‒개인의 에피스테메를 갖는다고 보았다. 여기에는 1)서구를 개인의 특정 체험의 대상을 선택적으로 전유하는 서구의 분할, 2)근대 역사주의적 시간감각과는 다른, 동시대성의 시간 내러티브, 3)묘사적 글쓰기와 대중 미디어의 지식생산 시스템의 관계를 통해 살펴보았다.

영어초록

This article views travels in the Western world during the colonial period from the standpoint of the actual travel experiences, ‘the Western world’ represented and created from that experiences, and self-image or identity stimultaneously constructed in the representation process.
Travels in the Western world during the colonial period can be divided into 1)in the early 1920s, a full-length of serial travels focused in the actual ‘journey’ of travellers or students studying abroad, 2)after the mid-1920s, travels of ‘experiences of studying under adversity’ in the United States, publishied serially in newspapers and magazines, 3)after the late 1920s, travels specialized in ‘cultural experiences’ of individuals in one paticular area, 4)a full-leanth of serial travels written by authors who had been dispatched to the political events in the U.S. or Russia, etc., published in some newspapers, such as the Dong-A Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo. The discussion of this article is mainly on the third as above, ‘after the late 1920s, travels specialized in ‘cultural experiences’ of individuals in one paticular area.’In the process of analyzing, the travel writing, in the light of ‘a particular method of representation construction’, under condition of ‘the writing of individuals’ empirical experiences,’ is internally analyzed. This method is that 1)the form of relations between space(place) and subject, 2)an awareness of time consisted of the travel writing’s narrative, 3)relations between the writing form and media, presented from these factors, and concluding all of these, 4)how the subjects of travels accordance with the subject image in the modern period in Korea.
From this process, it discovered that in this kind of travels, the Western world is described with a focus on the special experiences of individuals, with ethnographical approach on the alien area of the Western, or on some experiences of festivals within the Western’s daily life and culture. Then, by seperating from the belonging community, an individual is formed and he or she possesses an episteme of consumer-individual. This article is about 1)the division of the Western appropriating selectively as the object of certain experiences of individuals 2)time narrative of contemporaneity, different from the historical sense of time, 3)the relations between discriptive writing and the knowledge production system of mass communication.
