영화 <노다지>의 특징적 표현기법에 대한 고찰 (A study of cinematic style of film noir in Korean movie)

초록

한국전쟁 직후, 무엇 하나 풍족할 수 없었던 한국의 영화제작 현장은 제 기능을 하지 못하는 정부의 시책과 밀려드는 외화와의 경쟁 속에서 생존하기 위해 고군분투하였다. 한국의 영화산업은 열악한 환경을 극복하고 영화인들의 열정과 재능을 토양으로 싹 틔울 수 있었고, 60년대를 시작으로 세계시장으로의 도약을 모색할 만큼 성장한다. 이러한 사실은 한국 초기 영화산업의 동향에 주목하는 수많은 연구들이 동일하게 강조하고 있고, 또한 다양한 사료들로부터 어렵지 않게 확인되는 내용이다. 분명 전후 1960년대 초기까지의 기간은 한국 영화계가 산업적 면모를 갖추기 시작한, 한국 영화사의 매우 중요한 시기였다. 따라서 한국 초기 영화산업의 특징적인 영화들에 대한 고찰은 영화 그 자체의 가치 평가를 위해서 뿐만 아니라, 한국 영화사의 밀도 있는 구조를 위해서라도 반드시 수행되어야 할 과업이다. 하지만 정전 이후 60년대 초반 사이에 제작된 한국영화들에 대한 지금까지의 연구들은, 영화를 매개로 해당 시기의 사회적 동향을 분석하거나 감독의 작가적 면모를 강조하는 것에만 집중하였던 나머지, 영화의 특징적인 기법들에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 무관심하여 왔다. 그 결과로 영화의 다양한 표현기법들이 영화의 외양으로서 그리고 영화 언어로서 직접적인 작용을 하는 것임에도 불구하고, 한국 영화사 연구에 있어서 영화의 기술사적 측면에 대한 고찰은 찾아 볼 수 없게 되었다. 이 논문은 한국 영화사 연구에 있어서 나타나는 이러한 문제점을 논의하기 위해 할리우드의 장르 분석이론을 적용하여 정창화 감독의 1961년 작품 <노다지>를 분석하고, 그 특징적인 영화기법과 영상언어에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

After the Korean War, the Korean film industry began namely as the Chungmuro Age. The Korean film industry in the mid to late-1950s was having a hard time because it didn’t have enough resources for making movies such as capital, techniques and equipment, however, it had the ability to grow up well with young movie-men’s passion and talent for movies. In those days, the problem was not simply the lack of resources for the Korean film industry, but there was also another obstacle. In fact, before the middle 1950s, the average numbers of Korean movies which were produced in a year was just around 10. On the other hand, the average numbers of imported movies was around 90 at that time. So in 1956, the number of imported movies went as high as 170. In other words, the Korean film industry had to compete with imported movies, which flocked into Korean movie theaters in the aftermath of war. It is not difficult to see the reflection of the Korean government and the film market in this mismatch, but it is hard to see what kind of reflection there was in Korean movies at that period through the latest studies of Korean film history. There is no consideration of cinematography such as lighting and camera work, so to speak; instead there is enough evidence and study about policy and sociology related to the Korean film market during this period. Undoubtedly, movie-men showed their efforts to break through the mismatched film market, and this was the competition of the global film market at that time, so there must be evidence of their efforts in the movies. Therefore, this essay focuses on Bonanza (1961) by Chung Chnag-wa, who directed the Five Fingers of Death, with a similar genre theory of Hollywood movies, and then we can understand what the strategies were in the competition between global film industries. It seems awkward, but actually not, to use an analysis of theory regarding Hollywood movies compared to Korean movies, which were produced with difficulty after the Korean War, even if it discussed the universality of visible character in film making. The genre theory of Hollywood movies is useful to see the possibility in evaluating the dynamics and initial parts of the modern visual beauty in the Korean film industry.
