초록

옥계 노진은 조선 전기의 대표적 문신관료로서 명신으로 일컬어진다. 비록 정치, 문화, 학술 상에서 역사적으로 뚜렷한 자취를 남기지는 않았지만 당시에는 매우 온건하고 합리적인 인물로 인정을 받았다. 어린 시절 아버지를 여의고 형제를 잃고 장년의 시기에 이르기까지 슬하의 자녀가 여럿 요절하는 등 생활세계가 불우하였으며 그로 인해 홀어머니를 지극 정성으로 모셔서 효도가 그의 삶을 상징하는 이미지가 되었다. 이런 불우한 생활세계는 온건하고 합리적으로 관료로서 자기 역할을 충실하게 하고 무리하지 않으며 노모를 극진히 모시고 주어진 삶을 무난하게 살아가려는 그의 삶과 세계관을 형성하는 데 결정적인 역할을 한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 노진은 향리의 사대부 지식인으로서 기초 학문을 익히고 생원시에 합격한 뒤 성균관에 유학하면서 당대 명성을 날리던 인물들과 널리 교유하면서 학문을 연마하였다. 출사하여 관료가 된 뒤에는 전형적인 학자 관료로서 임무에 충실하였다. 그러나 학문을 닦고 심성을 수양하는 개인적인 성취에 관심을 두기보다 지역사회의 행정과 교화에 힘을 써서 풍속을 개선하고 향촌의 기강과 질서, 문화적 수준을 향상시키는 일에 힘을 썼다. 노진은 성리학자로서 당대 학자들과 성리학의 주요 문제인 격물치지, 인심도심 등에 관해 논쟁을 진행하였고 관료로서 토지제도와 붕당에 관해 나름대로 현실적 관점에서 개혁적이고 온건한 해결책을 제시하였다. 그의 학술사상과 경세사상은 1차 텍스트의 상대적 부족으로 인해 정확하게 전모를 밝혀내기는 어렵다. 그리하여 그는 조선 중기 도학자의 한 사람이라기보다는 사림 주도의 정치로 재편되어 가던 명종, 선조 시기 사림파의 진출에 일정한 역할을 하였고 스스로 사림파의 정체성을 갖고 있었던 인물로 규정할 수 있다. 논어 , 대학 , 근사록 , 심경 등을 늘 가까이 하고 대학 의 근본 이념을 평생 학문의 종지로 삼고 정주의 학설을 신뢰하였던 인물로서 전형적인 16세기 문인, 관료로서 ‘부지런히 배우고 묻기를 좋아하며, 인자하고 은혜로우며 어버이를 사랑한’ 일생을 살았다고 한 당대의 평가는 적절하다 하겠다.

영어초록

Okg-ye Roh Jin is a representative civil servant official of the early Joseon Dynasty and is called Myeongsin. Although he did not leave a significant historical mark in politics, culture, or academic circles, he was recognized as a very moderate and reasonable figure at the time. His life was unfortunate, as he lost his father when he was young, his brother, and many of his children died young until he reached adulthood. As a result, he treated his widowed mother with utmost sincerity, and filial piety became an image that symbolized his life. It has been done. This unfortunate world of life can be seen as playing a decisive role in shaping his life and worldview, in which he faithfully fulfilled his role as a moderate and rational bureaucrat, did not overdo himself, cared for his elderly mother dearly, and lived the given life comfortably.
As an intellectual of the nobility of the local village, Roh Jin learned basic academics, passed the Saengwonsi exam, and studied abroad at Sungkyunkwan, where he honed his academic skills by associating widely with famous figures of the time. After he entered the civil service and became a government official, he remained faithful to his duties as a typical scholar-official. However, rather than being interested in personal achievements such as cultivating academics and cultivating one’s mind, he focused on the administration and edification of the local community, improving customs, and improving the discipline, order, and cultural level of the local community. As a Neo-Confucian scholar, Roh Jin debated with scholars of his time about the major problems of Neo-Confucianism, such as the Study Things to Acquire Knowledge(格物致知), the debate of Human Mind And Moral Mind(人心道心), and as a government official, he presented reformative and moderate solutions to the land system and corruption from his own realistic perspective.
He was a sincere, moderate and reasonable administrator, and a local official who loved his country and people. The image cast of him, both in his time and today, is that of an extremely dutiful and gentle scholar and bureaucrat. We can probably guess why he lived this kind of life. During his childhood, he experienced the absence of his father, who was an axis of his life, and was treated as a misfortune on several occasions, although it cannot be said to be very unusual at the time. His entire life corresponds to the middle period, but in fact, he was supported by his elderly mother and followed his life, entrusted to him from his youth. Due to the pain of existence that plagued him throughout his life, it was difficult for him to take an enterprising, combative, controversial, or innovative attitude. Due to the relative lack of primary texts, it is difficult to accurately reveal the full extent of his academic and governance thoughts. Therefore, rather than being one of the moral Neo-Confucianists(道學者)of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, he can be defined as a person who played a certain role in the advancement of the Sarim faction during the reign of King Myeongjong and King Seonjo, when politics were being reorganized into Sarim-led politics, and who had the identity of the Sarim faction himself.
