1960년대 박경리 문학에 나타난 ‘청년-여성’ 담론 연구—『노을 진 들녘』과 『녹지대』를 중심으로 (A study on the ‘Youth-Female’ Discourse in Park Kyung-ree’s 1960s Novels—Focusing on “The Fields of Nocturnal” and “Green Land”)

초록

이 논문은 박경리의 1960년대 장편소설인 『노을 진 들녘』과 『녹지대』에 드러난 ‘청년-여성’의 형상을 진정성의 레짐을 중심으로 만들어진 기존 청년 담론을 해체하는 방식으로 분석한 글이다. 1960년대 당시 지식인 청년들은 물질적 가치를 우선시하고 속물적 태도를 보이는 세태를 비판하는 가운데 정의로운 사회의 건설에 앞장섰다. 그런데 문제는 이렇게 진정성의 주체로 거듭나고자 했던 이들이 추구했던 진정성이라는 가치가 결국 또 다른 사회적 갈등과 소외를 일으켰다는 것이다. 이 청년들은 혁명의 바깥에 놓여 있었던 자신과는 다른 존재들의 모습을 제대로 살피지 못했고, 그 과정에서 다른 존재들을 타자화시키거나 대상화시키기도 했다.
이때 박경리의 소설은 이 시기 진정성의 주체로 호명되었던 작가들이 미처 살피지 못했던 주변부적 존재들의 삶을 다루고, 그들을 ‘청년-여성’ 주체로 다시금 호명하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 박경리는 여성이자 대중소설가라는 이유로 그 가치를 제대로 인정받지 못했던 작가 중 한명이라 할 수 있는데, 본고는 오히려 그러한 작가의 작품 속에서 진정성의 레짐을 극복한 청년-여성 주체의 형상을 발견하고자 한다. 이는 그간 주류 담론에서 소외되거나 등한시되었던 존재들을 가시화시킴으로써 주체와 타자, 그리고 근대와 전근대를 구분했던 이분법적 논리를 극복하기 위한 작업이라고 할 수 있다.
우선 『노을 진 들녘』의 경우, 4·19 혁명의 주축으로 호명된 남성 주체들이 내세웠던 정의라는 가치가 얼마나 위선적인지를 여주인공 ‘주실’을 철저하게 대상화하는 남성 인물들을 통해 보여주고 있다. 또한 소설은 주실이 남성 중심적 시각을 견지한 근대성에 오염되지 않고 반대로 그것을 심문하는 모습을 보여줌으로써 그녀를 단순히 피해자의 위치에 머무르게 하지 않고 주체로서 다시 일으켜 세우고 있다. 한편 『녹지대』에서는 급속한 경제 개발로 인해 갈 곳을 잃은 청년들의 모습을 ‘비트족’이라는 청년 그룹을 통해 현실적으로 묘사해내고 있는데 여기서 중요한 점은 이 소설이 물질적 가치와 그것을 좇는 세태를 비판하기보다는 그럴 수밖에 없었던 당대 현실을 그려내는 것에 초점을 두고 있다는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 소설에서 ‘인애’는 경제적 활동의 중요성을 인정하면서도, 그것을 넘어 우리에게 더 중요한 가치가 무엇인가를 끊임없이 탐색해나감으로써 주체성을 획득해 나가는 모습을 보인다. 이러한 인애의 모습은 작가가 근대성 자체를 부정하는 것이 아니라, 그것의 문제를 명확히 인식하고 보다 나은 근대성을 만들어나가는 작업에 몰두하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있게 해준다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the shape of ‘Youth-Female’ revealed in Park Kyung-ree’s 1960s Novels, "The Fields of Nocturnal" and "Green Land," by dismantling the existing youth discourse created around the regime of authenticity. In the 1960s, young intellectuals took the lead in the construction of a just society while prioritizing material values and criticizing the world's snobbish attitude. However, the problem was that the value of authenticity pursued by those who wanted to be reborn as the subject of authenticity could eventually cause another social conflict and alienation. These young people did not properly look at the appearance of beings different from themselves that existed outside the revolution, other beings were others or objectified.
It is noteworthy that Park Kyung-ree's novel deals with the lives of peripheralists who were called the subjects of authenticity during this period, and calls them ‘Youth-Female’ subjects again. Park Kyung-ree is one of the writers who was not properly recognized for the value of the novel because she was a woman and a popular novelist, and this paper rather seeks to discover the image of Youth-Female subject who overcame the regime of authenticity in such a writer's work. This can be said to be a work to overcome the dichotomy logic that distinguished the subject, the other, and the modern and the former by bringing the stories of those who have been alienated or neglected in mainstream discourse to the surface.
First of all, in the case of "The Fields of Nocturnal," the author shows the hypocrisy of justice, which was emphasized by the male subjects at the center of April Revolution, through male characters in the novel that thoroughly targets "Ju-sil." In addition, rather than portraying the chamber as simply staying in the victim's position, the novel raises female as subjects by showing her interrogation of it rather than being contaminated by the modernity that has not deviated from male-centered values. On the other hand, "Green Land" realistically depicts the youth of the time lost due to rapid economic development through the portrayal of the ‘Beat Generation’, which is important because the novel focuses on portraying the reality of the time, which had no choice but to do, rather than criticizing the material value and the world chasing it. In addition, while recognizing the importance of economic activities in the novel, "In-ae" is gaining subjectivity by constantly exploring what value is truly important to us. This appearance of humanity does not deny modernity itself, but allows us to confirm that the artist was clearly aware of its problems and immersed in the work of creating a better modernity.
