초록

연구배경 한국형 전자레인지는 한국 음식을 요리할 수 있다는 점을 제품의 핵심 정체성으로 내세우는 전자레인지를 말한다. 1987년 ‘삼성 한국형 전자레인지’ RE-777BR 모델이 등장하기 이전까지 그런 움직임은 없었다.
이 모델의 등장 이후 한국형 전자레인지는 국내 전자레인지 시장의 대세로 자리를 잡았다. 그런데 지금까지 이런한국형 전자레인지가 어떠한 맥락에서 출현했고, 어떠한 방식으로 발전해왔는지에 관한 연구는 없었다. 본 연구는 최초의 한국형 전자레인지가 어떠한 배경 속에서 출현했는지, 그리고 이어서 등장한 한국형 전자레인지들은어떤 방향으로 발전해 나갔는지를 고찰함으로써 1980년대 후반 한국형 전자레인지의 전개 양상을 밝히는 데 목적을 두고 있다.
연구방법 본 연구는 기본적으로 광고를 통해 제품을 이해하는 방법을 취하고 있다. 그렇다고 광고에만 의지해내용에 접근하고 있는 건 아니다. 광고는 물론이고 관련 문헌과 일간지 기사 등의 자료를 기호학과 담론분석의방법을 통해 분석한 후, 분석된 내용을 비평적 서술의 방법을 통해 구조화함으로써 목적하는 결과를 도출하고 있다.
연구결과 한국형 전자레인지의 출현 이유와 배경은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국형 전자레인지는 1986년에 본격화된 수출의 어려움을 극복하기 위한 과정에 출현했다. 둘째, 한국형 전자레인지는 수입자유화 품목에 전자레인지가 포함되면서 국내 시장에서 경쟁 우위를 점하기 위해서 개발되었다. 셋째, 기술적 한계 상황에서 변별점을만들어내기 위한 하나의 방안으로 한국형 전자레인지 개발이 이루어졌다. 넷째, 식문화의 서구화 움직임에 대한반작용으로 나타난 한국 음식에 대한 관심이 한국형 전자레인지를 출현시킨 배경이 되었다. ‘삼성 한국형 전자레인지’ RE-777BR 모델 출시 이후, 삼성전자뿐만 아니라 금성사와 대우전자도 한국형 전자레인지를 생산하였다.
이들 업체가 생산한 한국형 전자레인지들은 한국 음식을 요리할 수 있다는 점을 강조하면서도 당시 사회문화적상황 변화에 맞춰 다양한 모습으로 확장하는 모습을 보여주었다.
결론 한국 음식을 요리할 수 있다는 점을 정체성으로 내세운 한국형 전자레인지는 수출규제와 수입자유화와 같은 난관을 돌파하는 과정에서 출현하였고, 1980년대 후반의 사회문화적 내용과 관계하면서 국내의 지배적 전자레인지 유형으로 자리 잡았다.

영어초록

Background Korean-style microwave ovens refer to microwave ovens that can cook Korean food as their core identity. Until 1987, when the Samsung Korean-style Microwave Oven RE-777BR model appeared, there was no such product. Since the appearance of this model, Korean-style microwave ovens have become the mainstream in the domestic microwave oven market. However, there has been no research on the context in which these Korean-style microwave ovens appeared and how they developed.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the diffusion process and design culture of Korean-style microwave ovens in the late 1980s by examining the background in which the first Korean microwave ovens appeared and in what direction they developed.
Methods This study applies a method of understanding products through advertisements.
However, this does not mean that the content is approached by relying only on advertisements. After analyzing advertisements, related literature, and daily newspaper articles through the method of semiotics and discourse analysis, the analyzed contents are structured through the method of critical description to derive the desired result.
Results The reason and background of the emergence of Korean-style microwave ovens are as follows. First, the Korean-style microwave oven emerged as a response to difficulties in exports that started in 1986. Second, as microwave ovens were included in the list of import liberalization items, the Korean-style microwave oven was developed to gain a competitive edge in the domestic market. Third, the Korean-style microwave oven was developed as a way to create a point of distinction in a situation where technological development has reached its limit. Fourth, the increased interest in Korean food, which arose as a reaction to the westernization of food culture, served as the backdrop for the development of the Korean-style microwave oven. Following the release of the Samsung Korean-style Microwave Oven RE-777BR model, Korean-style microwave ovens were produced not only by Samsung Electronics but also by GoldStar and Daewoo Electronics. Korean-style microwave ovens produced by these companies emphasized their ability to cook Korean food while showcasing a variety of developments in response to the social and cultural context of the time.
Conclusions The Korean-style microwave oven, which assumed as its identity the ability to cook Korean food, appeared in the process of overcoming difficulties such as export restrictions and import liberalization. Since then, Korean-style microwave ovens have become the dominant type in South Korea, influenced by the social and cultural context of the late 1980s.
