1950년대 문화연구 동향과 지성사적 가능성 (The Trend of Literary Studies and the Possibility of Intellectual History in 1950s)

초록

이 글은 1990년대 후반부터 한국문학 연구를 주도한 문화론적 관점이 해방기와 한국전쟁 이후의 문학 텍스트를 재해석하고 그 논의 대상과 범주를 확장하는 데 얼마나 기여했는지를 살펴보는 데 주된 목적을 둔다. 더 구체적으로 말해 근대문학 형성기부터 식민지기까지 문화연구를 촉발시킨 여러 계기들을 고려한 후 1950년대를 대상으로 한 문화론적 연구의 최근 동향을 정리했다. 냉전, 미국, 아시아를 표제어로 삼은 한국문학 연구의 세계사적 시각이 전통과 현대, 아시아(동양)과 미국(서양), 반공주의와 민주주의 등의 이념적 도식을 넘나들며 수행된 문화연구의 결과라는 사실은 부인할 수 없다. 이러한 연구 경향은 해방 이후 정치 이념이 일상적, 문학적으로 내면화되는 현상과 그 문화사를 고찰하고 더 나아가 한국 전후사회의 세계사적, 지성사적 흐름을 읽어내는 데에도 중요한 활력을 제공했다. 이 시기 문화연구를 통해 학회지, 신문, 잡지 등의 매체 연구가 활발하게 진행되었으며 좌익, 우익 또는 전통성, 현대성에 대한 단선적인 시각이 교정되었다. 문학 텍스트의 역사적 생산 조건이나 이데올로기적 효과에 근간하여 정전(正典)에 관한 비판론이 좀더 구체화되고 문학 담론의 정치적 계기나 문학 그룹(문단)의 활동이 다채롭게 해명되었다. 또한 1950년대 문학에 대한 기존의 독해방식에 의문이 제기되었다. 한국전쟁은 세계 체제의 변동에 따라 기존 이념과 관념이 재편성되는 결정적인 계기로서 작용했고, 특히 3차대전론, 아메리카니즘, 젠더론, 탈식민화론, 재건담론 등 상호 모순적이고 복합적인 문화론적 현상을 연쇄적으로 추동시켰다. 이러한 관점을 통해 한국전쟁을 둘러싼 연구 담론의 지형이 크게 확장되었고, 문학에 관한 학제적 연구의 필요성과 가능성도 더욱 증대되었다.

영어초록

The aim of this paper is to research how much the cultural point of view, whichhas been leading the study the Korean literature from late 1990s, has contributedto re-interpretating literary texts and to expanding the category of subjects anddiscussion after the Korean Liberation and the Korean War. More specifically, aftersurveying the several opportunities that had triggered the cultural studies from theformation of modern literature to the Japanese colonial era, the recent trends ofcultural studies on the period of 1950s were made in this paper. It is undeniablethat the world historical viewpoint of studies on the Korean literature that regardedthe Cold War, America, and Asia as title words, was the result of literary studiesthat was conducted by crossing the ideological diagram such as, tradition and modern,Asia (East) and American (West), and anticommunism and democracy. This researchtrends have played a vital role in considering the phenomenon and its culturalhistory that the political ideology after Korean-liberation was internalized dailyand literally, furthermore, have vitalized in grasping world historical and intellectualflows of the postwar society of Korea. During this period, media researches onscholarly journals, newspapers, and magazines was briskly done by literary studies,and the unilinear viewpoint on the Left, the Right, traditionality and modernitywas revised. Rooted in the historical condition and ideological effect on literarytexts, the criticism on the canon was taken its concrete shape, and the political situation of literary discourse and the activities of literary circles were diverselyexplained. Moreover, the question was raised on the existing method of comprehensionabout 1950’s literatures. The Korean War acted a conclusive opportunity onreorganizing the existing ideology and ideas according to the change of internationalsystem, and especially, cultural phenomena that are complex and inter-contradictory,were stimulated such as The Third World War, Americanism, Gender Theory,Post-colonialism, and Rebuilding Discourse. By this point of view, the geographyof research discourse about the Korean War was widely extended and the necessityand the possibility on inter-disciplinary research about literature were highly improvedas well.
