초록

1930년대 신문잡지전성시대를 선도했던 『신동아』가 ‘일장기말소사건’으로 폐간된 지 28년 만에 1964년 9월 정식 복간된다. 『신동아』의 복간은 잡지사적으로 신문잡지의 복원과 함께 제2신문잡지시대를 견인해내는 선구적인 역할을 하는 가운데 1960~70년대 잡지계 재편의 기폭제 역할을 하는 의의를 지닌다. 어찌 보면 1930년대의 재현이라 할 수 있다. 복간 『신동아』의 편집체재는 중점주의와 다양성을 겸비한 망라주의로 종합지편집의 일반성을 지니지만 과거와 달리 문학중점주의에서 탈피한 특징을 보인다. 이는 종합지의 새로운 변화를 암시하는 동시에 1960년대 사회 변동에 대응한 매체전략이었다. 복간 『신동아』의 중점주의편집의 독보적 특징은 서민주체의 수기를 위주로 한 논픽션, 르포르타주와 백서이다. 1960~70년대 복간 『신동아』소재 100여 편의 수기에 나타난 서민 주체적 글쓰기는 대중이 말할 수 있는 권리를 잡지미디어를 통해 구현한 민권신장의 한 징표이다. 급격한 사회변화로 야기된 병리적 현상의 다양한 이면을 고발하는 것에서부터 공론의 장에서 쟁점이 된 공공의 문제를 심층 취재한 르포와 1960년대 개발의 연대의 모순과 병폐를 주로 정경연합의 지배체제의 모순과 비리에 초점을 맞춘 다룬 종합보고서인 백서는 편집체재상 상호보완적 관계를 지니는 가운데 당대 지배권력 구조 안팎의 모순과 비리를 적발ㆍ비판하는 기능을 한다. 이 모든 것은 복간 『신동아』기획력, 취재력, 정보력을 잘 보여주는 것으로 신문잡지로서의 장점을 극대화한 산물이다. 복간 『신동아』의 매체전략은 시사성을 중심으로 한 정론성과 대중성이 상호 결합된 체계를 지닌다. 시사성을 매개로 한 정론, 특히 발전주의이데올로기에 대한 지속적 문제제기와 비판은 1968년 ‘신동아 필화사건’이 반증하듯 복간 『신동아』의 정론성이 불온한 것이었으며 아울러 그 매체전략이 종합지의 새로운 차원을 개척한 것이라는 점을 잘 보여준다. 시사성에 바탕을 둔 대중성은 안정적인 발간, 높은 발행부수, 다양한 세대에게 인정받은 권위, 다양한 독서대중에게 수용되는 특징을 감안할 때 당대 교양의 지평을 넓힌 가운데 대중들의 교양 함양에 크게 기여했다고 볼 수 있다. 당시 문학중심의 속물교양에서 시사교양으로의 확대의 중심에 복간 『신동아』가 위치한다. 복간 『신동아』가 본지와의 분업적 관계 때문에 편집의 중점에서 문학을 배제했으나 문학후원자로서의 역할을 방기한 것은 아니다. 지면의 제한을 주지 않았고 장편연재를 무한정으로 보장한 것은 문학지에 비해 오히려 긍정적인 배려라 할 수 있다. 복간『신동아』와 문학의 관계에서 주목할 것은 복간 『신동아』소재 수기의 문학적 가능성과 『소설 조선총독부』를 비롯한 고증 중시의 근대사관련 장편연재가 갖는 의미를 분석적으로 고찰하는 일이다.

영어초록

『shindonga』 which led the golden age of newspapers and magazines reissued in September, 1964. It was after 28 years when it was discontinued because of Erasure of Japanese National Flag. The reissue of 『shindonga』 played a leading role in guiding the 2nd era of newspapers and magazines while reissuing it. Also, it has a significance as a catalyst for reorganization of magazines in the 1960s-1970s. In some ways, it was the reappearance of the 1930s. The edit style of reissued 『shindonga』 is including system which has priority system and diversity. It has the generality in editing the general consumer magazines. However, unlike in the past, it deviated from the priority system of literature. It indicated the new paradigm of general comsumer newspapers and it was the media strategy according to the social changes in the 1960s. The matchless features of priority system-editing in reissued 『shindonga』 are nonfiction, reportage, and white paper mainly with ordinary people's memoirs. In the 1960s~1970s, around 100 memoirs in reissued 『shindonga』 showed that people's independent writing was the symbol of increasing people's rights to speak through the magazine media.
There were three kinds of memoirs. First, one reported the hidden side of social pathology due to rapid social changes. Another is called Reportage which reported public problems discussed in depth in public opinions. The other is white report which reported the systematic contradiction and corruption of politics and economics alliance in development period in the 1960s. All of them had a role to criticize and report the within and without of contradiction and corruption of authority. Also, all had complementary relationship. All showed planning ability, reporting ability, information ability of reissued 『shindonga』 and they are the best work which maximized the good things about it. The media strategy of reissued 『shindonga』 had crosslinked system with popularity and politics focusing on topical events. Politics with topical events, especially continuous problem posing and criticism about developmentalism were rebellious in politics. It was improved in 'shindonga Serious Slip Affair' in 1968. Also, it implied the media strategy developed new dimension in the magazines. Considering the stable publication, large circulation, acknowledgment and acceptance from all ages, it can be seen that the popularity based on topical events contributed to improve refinement for the people. Reissued 『shindonga』 was in the center of expansion from literature-centric materialistic refinement to current affairs and refinement. It excluded literature in editing because of the separative work with this newspaper. However it didn't renounce the role as literature sponsor. It didn't restrict to the magazine and guaranteed unlimited novel serially, which was the positive regard comparing with literature. In the relationship with literature and reissued 『shindonga』, the literary possibility of memoirs in reissued 『shindonga』 and the significant feature which serially published novels about modern history and 『Novel, the Japanese Government-General of Korea』 should be contemplated analytically.
