초록

본 연구는 1980년대 초반 반공해 마당극 창작 및 공연에 참여했던 문화운동 및 반공해운동 주체들의 활동을 기반으로 창작된 일련의 연행들이 1980년대 중후반 한국의 변혁적 사회운동의 맥락 위에서 다각화되는 양상을 조망하고자 했다. 이 연행들은 반독재 민주운동이라는 공유된 대항공적영역 위에서 장일순과 김지하를 통해 연결된 생명사상·한살림운동 혹은 1980년대 중후반 이후 반공해운동의 의제 확장과 대중화라는 영역과 연결되어 창작되고 공연되었다. 운동 및 사상의 분화와 중첩 속에 각 연행이 어떠한 재현의 전략을 선택하였는지, 그리고 강력한 현장의 형식이라는 점에서 각 ‘연행’의 시간과 장소성이 본래의 의도를 어떠한 방식으로 반영하거나 굴절시켰는지에 주목했다.
<밥>(1985), <공해추방을 위한 시민 한마당>(1987), <먹이사슬>(1990), <공해공화국>(1992), <개똥이>(1995, 1997)의 사례에서 확인할 수 있듯이, 이 연행들은 공해 문제의 원인을 찾고 전망을 제시함에 차별점을 갖으면서도 1980년대라는 특수한 정치적 조건 속에 형성되었던 민중·민족운동의 강력한 정동을 기반으로 접합되었다는 특징을 갖는다. 이 극들의 사상적 기반은 장일순과 원주그룹에서 천주교·동학에 근간하여 재해석한 생명사상·종속이론과 ML사상에 근간한 학생운동권의 변혁사상으로 나눌 수 있고, 수행적 조건 또한 대학 내 반체제 집회·반핵발전·페놀문제 관련 주민운동 또는 반공해 환경운동·극장주의 공연으로 구분되었다. 현재의 기후 비상 시대 도출된 담론의 언어에 비추어 보았을 때, 이 시기의 분투는 비인간 존재·미래세대·사회적 약자에 초점화한 생태 민주주의와 물질대사 균열과 탈성장을 고찰하는 생태 사회주의의 스펙트럼 사이에서 유동했다.
즉 1980년대 중후반부터 일련의 마당극과 연행에서 생태론적 문제인식을 가시화 한 극은 반체제 민민운동·반공해운동·생명운동과 중첩되면서 서로 간의 운동적 긴장 관계 속에서도 압축 근대에 대한 성찰과 비판의 차원에서 접합되었다. 보통 대학과 주민운동 집회의 맥락에서 연행되었던 이 극들은 압축 근대를 경과하며 당연시된 성장·개발·토건·성공주의를 풍자하고, 그 뒤틀린 근대의 경제성의 실현을 위해 대지·인간·동식물이 어떠한 질병과 고통을 겪었는지를 고발했다. 이 연행들은 경쟁과 효율성, 개발과 전쟁 중심의 지배체제 특히 자본주의 근대화 비판을 수행하면서도 생명을 가진 존재가 살아갈 수 있는 기본적인 조건들에 대해 질문을 던졌다는 점, 생물학적 종을 횡단하는 상상력과 폭력의 불균등성을 가시화했다는 점, 미래세대에 대한 문제제기를 했다는 점에서 중심의 운동과 변별되었다. 해당 시기의 분투를 “연대의 추억”이 아닌 기후 정의의 시급성을 요청하는 현재를 위한 성찰의 대상으로 재조명해야 하는 이유이다.

영어초록

This study examines the diversification of a series of performances based on the activities of cultural and anti-pollution activists who participated in the creation and performance of anti-pollution yard theatre in the early 1980s in the context of transformative social movements in South Korea in the mid-to-late 1980s. The performances were created and performed in the shared public sphere of the anti-dictatorship democratic movement, connected through Jang Il-soon and Kim Ji-ha, or in the sphere of the expansion and popularisation of the anti-pollution movement’s agenda after the mid-to-late 1980s. Amidst the divergence and overlap of movements and ideas, I paid attention to how each performance chose a strategy of representation and how the time and place of each ‘performance’ reflected or refracted its original intentions as a powerful site-specific form.
As can be seen in the cases of Rice(1985), Citizen’s Courtyard for the Expulsion of Pollution(1987), Food Chain(1990), Republic of Pollution(1992), and Gaettong-i (1995, 1997), these performances are characterised by their distinctiveness in identifying the causes of the pollution problem and presenting prospects, yet they are united by the strong sentiments of the civil society movement, which was formed under the special political conditions of the 1980s. The ideological bases of these plays can be divided into Jang Il-soon and Won-joo’s reinterpretation of life thought and dependency theory based on Catholicism and Donghak, and the transformative thought of the student movement based on ML thought, and the performance conditions are also divided into anti-establishment rallies in universities, anti-nuclear power generation, people’s movements related to phenol problems, or anti-pollution environmental movements and theatre performances. In light of the discursive language derived from the current climate emergency, the struggles of this period fluctuated between the spectrum of ecological democracy, which focused on non-human beings, future generations, and the socially disadvantaged, and ecological socialism, which examined material metabolism and degrowth.
In other words, from the mid-to-late 1980s, a series of yard plays and performances that made ecological concerns visible overlapped with dissident folk movements, anti-pollution movements, and pro-life movements, and were conjoined as a level of reflection and critique of compressed modernity even in the midst of their own movement tensions. Often staged in the context of university and community rallies, the plays satirised the growth, development, construction and success that had been taken for granted during compressed modernity, and denounced the diseases and suffering of the land, people, animals and plants in order to realise the twisted economics of modernity. These arrests were distinct from the central movement in that they questioned the basic conditions of life for living beings, made visible the inequalities of imagination and violence across biological species, and raised questions about future generations, all while carrying out a critique of capitalist modernisation in particular, with its emphasis on competition, efficiency, development and war. This is why the struggles of that period should be reconsidered not as “solidarity memories” but as objects of reflection for the present, which calls for the urgency of climate justice.
