1918년 법정사 항일운동 발상지 재고찰 (Reconsidering Beopjeongsa Temple as the Birthplace of the "1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement")

초록

1911년 9월 봉려관(1865~1938)이 창건한 법정사가 바로 1918년제주 법정사 항일운동 발상지이다. 봉려관은 법정사 최초 창건자이자개산조이며, 초대 주지이다.
1914년을 전후해 봉려관은 영실에 거주하던 김연일, 강창규, 방동화를 법정사로 이주시켰고 그들은 1918년 음력 6월 법정사에서 사전계획을 수립한 후 본격적인 준비를 마치고 1918년 음력 9월 3일 법정사항일운동을 봉기한다. 법정사는 항일 핵심 인물들이 총집결했던 거점지였고, 항일 기지로서의 역할을 했다.
하지만 1911년 9월 창건된 법정사는 1918년 법정사 항일운동 이후폐사되었고 그 후 봉려관과 백인화가 중창했지만, 제주 4.3사건으로또 한 번 폐사된 후 지금에 이르고 있다.
2019년 제주특별자치도 세계유산본부가 1918년 법정사 항일운동발상지 위치 논란을 야기했고, 2022년 한상봉은 자료에 근거해 제주세계유산본부의 주장을 정면 반박한다. 제주 4.3사건 전까지 법정사를 왕래했던 백인화의 외손녀 강인호 구술, 1918년 법정사 주변 거주자후손들의 구술 모두 1918년 항일운동 발상지 법정사는 ‘법정이내’ 동쪽에 위치하였다고 증언한다. 필자가 이들 자료와 구술을 종합 분석한 결과도 1918년 법정사 위치는 도순동 ‘법정이내’ 동쪽에 위치한 것이분명하다.1918년 법정사 항일운동 발상지는 ‘법정이내’ 동쪽에 위치하고, 법정사 주변의 상동과 영남리에는 화전민 거주지가 분포해 있었으며, 66인송치자 중에는 상동과 영남리의 거주민도 포함돼 있다.
본 논문에서 도출된 법정사 창건 연도 및 창건자, 그리고 근래 논란이야기된 1918년 법정사 항일운동 발상지 위치 및 법정사 주변에 분포한항일운동 참여자 거주처 분석 등의 연구 결과가 향후 1918년 법정사 항일운동 연구자들에게 도움이 되길 기대한다.

영어초록

Beopjeongsa Temple－founded by Bongnyeogwan (1865-1938) in September 1911－was the cradle of the Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement in Jeju in 1918. Bongnyeogwan was the founder and founding teacher of Beopjeongsa Temple, and its first abbess.
Around 1914, Bongnyeogwan invited Kim Yeon-il, Kang Chang-gyu, and Bang Dong-hwa－all of whom were living in Yeongsil－to Beopjeongsa Temple to live as residents. After establishing a preliminary plan at Beopjeongsa Temple in the 6th lunar month in 1918, they completed their preparations, and Beopjeongsa's anti-Japanese Movement launched on the 3rd day of the 9th lunar month in 1918. Serving as a base for anti-Japanese sentiment, Beopjeongsa Temple became a stronghold where key anti-Japanese figures gathered.
Only 7 years after it was established, Beopjeongsa Temple was closed down due to its role in the 1918 anti-Japanese Movement. It was later rebuilt by Bongnyeogwan and Baek In-hwa, but was closed again after the infamous Jeju April 3rd Incident. The temple never reopened.
In 2019, the World Heritage Headquarters of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province raised doubt about the birthplace of the 1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement, and in 2022, Han Sang-bong directly refuted the Jeju World Heritage Headquarters' claim based on data he had collected. Both the oral testimony of Kang In-ho－the granddaughter of Baek In-hwa, who had visited Beopjeongsa Temple just before the Jeju April 3rd Incident－and the oral testimony of the descendants of residents who lived near Beopjeongsa Temple in 1918 testified that Beopjeongsa Temple was located east of a stream named "Beopjeong-inae." My own comprehensive analysis of this data and the oral testimonies also clearly show that the location of Beopjeongsa Temple in 1918 was east of Beopjeong-inae in Dosun-dong.
The birthplace of the 1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement was located east of Beopjeong-inae, and the areas of Sang-dong and Yeongnam-ri, located near Beopjeongsa Temple, were home to slash-and-burn farmers. And among the 66 people who were arrested and sent to the public prosecutor's office, the residents of Sang-dong and Yeongnam-ri were included. My research results presented in this paper concern the year of Beopjeongsa’s founding and its founder, the location of the birthplace of the 1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement that caused the recent controversy, and my analysis52 of the residences near Beopjeongsa where participants of the anti-Japanese movement lived. These should all be helpful to future researchers of the 1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese Movement.
