초록

《조선지광》은 1922년 11월에 창간해서 1932년 3월에 101호로 종간한 시사잡지였다. 이 논문은 월간으로 발행한 1926년 11월부터 발행상황, 편집방침, 경영, 공산당과 관계 등을 다뤘는데 편집을 중심으로 세 시기로 나눌 수 있다.
제1기는 1926년 11월(61호)부터 1927년 8월(70호)까지다. 조선공산당의 고려공산청년회가 기관지로 이용하면서 조공과 공청의 주요 간부들이 편집과 투고로 참여했다. 논전을 통해 민족운동과 사회운동의 당면 문제에 개입하고 지도하려고 했던 때였다. 발행과 경영 모두 비교적 안정적이었으며 이때 만든 편집의 틀과 기획은 종간 때까지 계속되었다. 제2기는 1927년 9월(71호)부터 1928년 7월(79호)까지다. 당원과 지식인을 넘어 독자 확대를 위해 지면의 대중화를 모색했다. 수필란과 강좌를 신설해서 독자에게 교양과 읽을거리를 제공했다. 독자 확대를 위해 정가를 50전에서 30전으로 내렸다. 1928년 2월에 조공의 기관지로 되었지만 이 무렵부터 조공과 관계 있는 사원의 검거가 계속되면서 조선지광사에 위기가 닥쳤다. 결호와 합병호가 처음으로 나오면서 정기 발행의 틀이 깨진 때였다. 제3기는 1928년 9월(80호)부터 1932년 3월(101호)까지다. 사원의 잇달은 검거와 도피로 기존의 편집진이 붕괴되고 조공과 관계도 끊어졌다. 사회주의 색채는 남았지만 성격이 모호했다. 잦은 결호와 발행 지연으로 독자는 줄고 경영난이 심해졌다. 악순환이 계속되면서 101호를 끝으로 소리소문 없이 종간했다.

This article analyses the monthly publication THE CHOSUN CHI KWANG (Joseon Ji Gwang, 朝鮮之光, initially translated as THE LIGHT at launch, and hereby stylized as The Chosun Chi Kwang). The Chosun Chi Kwang was a current affairs magazine that was first published in November 1922 and ceased publication with its 101st issue in March 1932. This article specifically covers the period from November 1926, when it began monthly publication. It delves into various aspects including publication circumstances, editorial policies, management, and its relationship with the Communist Party. The analysis is structured around the three distinct phases based on editorial changes.
The first phase spans from November 1926 (Issue 61) to August 1927 (Issue 70). During this time, Koryo Communist Youth Group (高麗共産靑年會), a part of the Communist Party of Korea (朝鮮共産黨), used it as their official organ as a means of communication. Key members of the Communist Party of Korea and the Youth Group actively participated in editing and contributing articles. Through debates and discussions, they attempted to intervene and guide both the national movement and social movements. The publication and management were relatively stable, and the editorial framework established during this period persisted until the final issue.
The second phase, from September 1927 (Issue 71) to July 1928 (Issue 79), focused on expanding readership beyond party members and intellectuals. Efforts were made to popularize the content by introducing new sections like essays and lectures, providing readers with cultural knowledge and reading material. Reducing the price from 50 to 30 jeon was also aimed at increasing the readership. However, from February 1928, when it became the official publication of the Communist Party of Korea, issues began to arise. The arrest and detention of staff members associated with the Party led to a crisis for The Chosun Chi Kwang. This period saw the first occurrences of missed and combined issues.
The third and final phase lasted from September 1928 (Issue 80) to March 1932 (Issue 101). Continuous arrests and escapes of staff members led to the collapse of the existing editorial team, and the association with the Communist Party of Korea was severed. Although socialist tendencies remained, the magazine’s identity became ambiguous. Frequent missed issues and delays in publication resulted in a declining readership and severe financial difficulties. This vicious cycle continued until the magazine quietly ceased publication with its 101st issue.
