초록

본고에서는 1980년 후반 광주 국악 전승에 새로운 기류가 발견됨을 감지하고 그것의 시발점은 1981년 전남대 국악과 설립 이후로 여겨, 1980년부터 1999년까지 광주 국악 공연의 파악으로 새로운 기류가 공연전승에 미친 영향을 살펴보았다. 파악기간을 1기(1977년~1985년), 2기(1986년~1993년), 3기(1994년~1999년)로 구분하고, 시기별로 공연형태를 알아보았다. 공연 주체자인 전남대학교 국악과를 졸업한 전문연주자들의 활동 또는 그와 관련된 국악공연의 흐름을 염두하고 시기를 구분했다.
1기 동안 지역공연은 판소리와 민요가 주를 이뤘다. 1981년 전남대 국악과의 신설로 국악 전문연주자가 배출되고, 그들은 90년대 창단한 시도립국악단의 단원으로 활동하였다.
2기의 전반부는 시도립국악단 창단에 따라 전통음악과 창극공연이 많았고, 1990년부터는 민간연주단체들의 창작음악연주와 광주악회의 기획연주가 있었다. 민간연주단체의 단원은 전남대 국악과 동문들인 전문연주자가 대부분이며, 그들은 국악동호회의 강사로도 활동했다. 풍물연주회는 국악동인들이 응집한 풍물단체들에서 주최했다.
3기는 광주시립국악관현악단이 창단된 시기로, 관현악단은 협주곡양식과 영화음악연주, 스토리가 있는 공연기획을 선보였다. 同시기의 전문민간단체들은 개량악기 연주회, 지역 국악작곡가들의 창작곡 발표회, 5․18 시대성을 반영한 창작악곡 연주회 등으로 공연내용을 다양화했다.
이처럼 전남대학교 국악과에서 양성한 전문연주자들은 시도립국악단과 민간연주단체 소속으로 활동하면서 지역의 전통음악 특히 기악과 창작음악 보급에 힘썼다. 지역공연계가 전통음악만을 고집하지 않고, 새로운 창작음악을 널리 향유할 수 있게 한 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 그들은 국악애호가들에게 전통음악을 교육함으로 지역 국악계의 대중화에도 기여하면서 지역의 국악공연이 다양화를 지향하는데 중추적인 역할을 했다고 생각한다.

영어초록

Detecting a new atmosphere in the transmission of Gugak in Gwangju in the second half of the 1980s, this study found its starting point in the establishment of Gugak Department at Chonnam National University in 1981 and set out to investigate the effects of the new atmosphere on the transmission of Gugak performances in Gwangju in 1980~1999. The research period was divided into Phase 1(1977~1985), Phase 2(1986~1993), and Phase 3(1994~1999), and the forms of performance were examined for each of the phases. The activities of professional performers that graduated from the Gugak Department at Chonnam National University and served as subjects at those performances were also divided into different phases based on the flow of Gugak performances related to them.
At Phase 1, local performances were mainly focused on Pansori and folk songs. As the Gugak Department was newly installed at Chonnam National University in 1981, professional Gugak performers were produced and joined municipal and provincial Gugak orchestras formed in the 1990s.
The former part of Phase 2 witnessed many performances of traditional music and Changgeuk after the formation of municipal and provincial Gugak orchestras. Starting in 1990, private performance groups put on creative music performances with Gwangju Akhoi providing planned music performances. Most members of private performance groups were professional performers that were alumni of Gugak Department at Chonnam National University, and they also taught as instructors at Gugak clubs. Pungmul performances were held by Pungmul groups that featured the cohesion of Gugak coterie members.
Phase 3 saw the creation of Gwangju Municipal Gugak Orchestra, which made performance plans containing the concerto form, film music, and stories. During the same period, professional private groups diversified the content of performances including recitals with improved instruments, presentations of creative pieces by local Gugak composers, and concerts of creative pieces reflecting the character of the May 18 Democratic Uprising era.
Professional performers cultivated in the Gugak Department at Chonnam National University worked hard on the spread of traditional local music, especially instrumental and creative music, as members of municipal and provincial Gugak orchestras and private performance groups. They contributed to the wide enjoyment of new creative music as the local performance community no longer insisted on traditional music. Furthermore, they also made a contribution to the popularization of local Gugak community by providing education on traditional music to Gugak enthusiasts and played a pivotal role in the diversification of local Gugak performances.
