언어장애 소설의 재현 양상과 해방의 전망 : 1925년부터 2021년까지 언어장애문학을 중심으로 (Reproduction Patterns and Prospects of Liberation of Novels with Language Disabilities)

초록

이 글은 1925년 나도향의 ｢벙어리 삼룡이｣ 이후 언어장애 주체를 주인공으로 삼은 100년간의 소설을 분류하고 장애 주체의 정체성이 비장애인에 의해 논의되면서 타자화되거나 주변인으로 전락하는 양상을 살폈다. Ⅱ장에서는 1925년부터 1950년까지의 언어장애 소설을 살펴 언어장애가 작가가 식민주의 문제 등에 대해 누구보다 날카로운 인식을 보여주고 일제강점기의 영향 아래 놓인 비극적 현실을 반영하는 방식으로 침묵하는 ‘불구 역할’과 그 비극성을 상징적으로 표상하고자 장애 인물을 소설에 등장시키고 있음을 확인했다. Ⅲ장에서는 1950년대 이후 1990년 이전까지 언어장애 소설에서의 인물들을 살폈는데 분단 이후 이산의 상흔과 국가 회복 속에서 행해지는 자본주의의 폐해와 인권의 사각에 놓여 고통받는 언어장애 인물들이 등장하고 있었다. 이들은 여전히 주변인이자 소통 불가능의 인물로 상정되고 있었지만, 점차 비장애인 인물들과 공존하는 방식으로 재현되어가고 있었으며 공동체적 화해의 가능성을 타진해 나가고 있음을 고찰했다. Ⅳ장에서는 1990년대 이후 2021년 미라클 크리크 까지 언어장애 소설 속 장애 인물을 살폈는데 이제 장애인은 비장애인의 주변인으로서가 아닌 그들의 실제적인 삶을 서사화하는 소설 속 중심인물로서 등장하고 있었다. 이는 바바의 방식으로 ‘사이에 낀 상태(the state of in-between)’에 혼종의 활력을 불어넣는 방식이며 스스로 문학으로 삶을 표출하여 실제적 사회 정체성을 형성하는 방식이다. 점차 장애인문학과 미디어 속 장애 인물의 삶을 통해 사회적 편견이 옅어지는 것을 체감할 수 있으며 장애 인물의 윤리적‧사회적‧경제적 위치를 통해 사회 공동체의 역할과 화해 가능성을 타진해 가고 있다는 점에서 이후 등장할 언어장애 소설을 긍정해 볼 수 있었다.

영어초록

This article categorizes the 100 years of novels that feature speech-impaired subjects since Do-hyang Na’s “Deaf and Mute, Samryongi” in 1925, and examines the ways in which the identities of disabled subjects are othered or relegated to marginalization as they are discussed by non-disabled people. Chapter Ⅱ examines novels with language impairment from 1925 to 1950, in which the writer shows a sharper awareness of issues such as colonialism than anyone else, and plays a ‘crippled role’ in silence in a way that reflects the tragic reality under the influence of Japanese colonial rule. It was confirmed that a disabled character appears in the novel to symbolically represent the tragedy. Chapter Ⅲ looked at characters in novels with language impairment from the 1950s to before 1990. Characters with language impairment appeared who suffered from the scars of separation after division and from the evils of capitalism and human rights in the midst of national recovery. Although they were still assumed to be marginalized and incapable of communication, we examined that they were gradually being reproduced in a way that coexisted with non-disabled people and were exploring the possibility of communal reconciliation. Chapter Ⅳ looked at disabled characters in novels with language impairment from the 1990s to 2021’s Miracle Creek. Now, disabled people are appearing not as peripheral people of non-disabled people but as central characters in novels that narrate their actual lives. This, as Homi Baba says, is a way to infuse hybrid vitality in ‘the state of in-between’ and a way to express life through literature and form a real social identity. Of course, the disabled people in the novel still appeared as failures in relationships with non-disabled people, and in general, the disabled people were forming a disability community by dating, loving, or helping other disabled people. Although it is slower to raise awareness than other social issues, we can feel that social prejudice is fading through the lives of disabled characters in disabled literature and media, and the role of the social community and the possibility of reconciliation are explored through the ethical, social, and economic positions of disabled characters. In that I was able to look positively at the language disorder novels that would appear in the future.
