초록

이 논문은 한국과 서독기독교 연대로 1980년에 설립된 한국 디아코니아 자매회(이하 자매회)를 역사사회학적으로 분석하면서 세계 냉전체제와 기독교, 그리고 자매회가 어떠한 관련이 있는지에 대해 살펴보았다.
한국 디아코니아자매회는 세계교회협의회(World Councils of Churches, WCC)의 제3세계 자유반공주의 전략에 따른 서독 기독교회와 한국 기독교회의 국제 자유반공주의 연대에 의해서 출현하였다. WCC는 소련 공산주의 진영과의 체제대결에서 승리하기 위해 토착화와 상황화라는 제3세계 자유반공주의 전략을 구사하기 시작하였다. 이에 발맞추어 서독 기독교회도 제3세계에 개발지원을 통해 동독과 체제대결을 벌였다. 이러한 상황 하에서 한국기독교회는 서독 기독교회로 부터 막대한 개발지원금을 받았다. 주로 여성자원개발, 도시산업선교, 빈민선교, 가족계획사업 등의 개발프로젝트 등이었다.
서독 기독교회는 한국에 처음으로 한국기독교장로회로 선교사를 파견하였다. 자매회를 주도한 안병무는 확고한 반공주의자로서 민중신학을 제창하였다. 민중신학은 공산주의 진영과의 체재대결에서 북한보다 정치, 경제, 사회적으로 우위에 서기 위한 신학 이론이었다. 민중신학에서 주목한 것은 ‘수난당하는 이웃’이었다. ‘수난당하는 이웃’은 공산주의가 자생할 수 있는 가장 적합한 토양이라고 믿었고, 공산주의 진영으로 ‘수난당하는 이웃’을 빼앗기지 않기 위해 민중을 역사의 주체라고 강조하였다. 안병무는 민중신학을 경청하던 독신의 여성제자들에게 ‘수난당하는 이웃’의 동료가 될 수 있는 신앙공동체를 제안하였다. 그것은 무지로 인해 가난에 시달리는 ‘이웃’을 구원하기 위한 개발프로젝트를 수행할 수 있는 가장 적합한 형태의 새로운 냉전 십자군 조직이었다.
서독 선교사 슈바이처는 안병무가 제안한 여성신앙공동체를 서독기독교의 제3세계 개발원조프로젝트의 하나로서 주목하였다. 그래서 슈바이처는 이 여성신앙공동체를 설립하는 과정에서 주도적으로 참여하였다. 자매회 회원들이 신앙공동체 창립에 적극 동참한 것은 당시 한국여성들이 처한 현실에 있었다. 그들은 전문적인 고등교육을 받았지만 자신들의 능력을 발휘할 수 있는 전문적인 직업을 가지기가 매우 어려웠다. 안병무와 슈바이처가 그들의 현실을 타개할 수 있는 길을 제시해주었던 것이다. 여성신앙공동체는 그들에게 미래가 보장되는 새로운 전문직업이었다. 기독교의 자비로 무장된 여성신앙공동체는 국내외에서 후원을 받을 수 있는 최고의 문화컨텐츠였다.
자매회 회원들은 농촌에서 보건사업 및 개발 사업에 적극 뛰어 들었다. 자매회의 설립과정, 그들의 농촌에서의 활동 등은 국내외 언론을 통해 소개되면서 WCC, 서독 기독교회 등을 비롯한 서구 기독교국가에서 제3세계 국가에 어떻게 접근하고 개발 사업을 전개해야 하는지에 대한 중요한 사례로서 제시되었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This analyzes, by the methodology of the historical sociology, the stories of the Diaconia Sisterhood in South Korea(hereinafter referred to as the Sisterhood), which was established in 1980 in Korea and West Germany Christian Solidarity. At the same time, it was examined about the relationship between the Cold War, Christianity, and Sisterhood.
Sisterhood emerged because of the solidarity of the international liberal anti-communism between West Germany and the Korean Christian Church under Third World Liberal Anti-Communism strategy of the World Councils of Churches (WCC). The WCC launched the Third World Liberal Anti-Communism Strategy of “Indigenization and Contextualization” in order to win the regime confrontation with the Soviet communist camp. Subsequently, the West German Christian Church confronted East Germany through development assistance to the Third World. In this atmosphere, the Korean Christian Church received huge development support from the West German Christian Church. Mainly, it was development projects such as women's resource development, urban industrial mission, poor mission, birth control and so forth.
The West German Christian Church sent missionaries to the Korean Christian Presbyterian Church for the first time in Korea. Ahn Byung-mu, who led the Sisterhood, insisted on people's theology as a firm anti-communist. Minjung theology was a theological theory aimed at standing politically, economically, and socially superior to North Korea in confrontation with the communist camp.
What was noted in folk theology was the "victimized neighbors." He thought the “victimized neighbor” that communism was the most suitable soil for self-sustainment, and emphasized the people as the subject of history so as not to deprive the “victimized neighbors” of the communist camp.
Ahn Byung-mu proposed to a single female disciple who listened to Minjung theology to a community of faith that could be a colleague of a "victimized neighbors." It was a new Cold War Crusade organization best suited for development projects to save “neighbors” who suffered from poverty by their ignorance.
A West German missionary, Schweitzer was interested in the women's faith community proposed by Ahn Byung-mu as one of the third world development aid projects in West Germany. Hence Schweitzer actively participated in the process of establishing this Women's Faith Community.
The reason why the members of Sisterhood participated in the establishment of the faith community was the situation of Korean women at that time. The women had professional higher education, but it was very difficult for them to have a professional career to exercise their abilities. Ahn Byung-mu and Schweitzer suggested ways to solve their difficult situation. The women's faith community was a new profession that promised them a future. Armed with Christian mercy, the Women's Faith Community was the best cultural content that could be supported at home and abroad.
The members of Sisterhood actively participated in health and development projects in rural areas. The process of establishing Sisterhood and its activities in rural areas were introduced through national and international media. This has been an important example of how Western Christian countries, including the WCC and the West German Christian Society, should approach third world countries and advance development projects.
