초록

이 논문에서는 나치 고고학의 기원과 특징에 대해 살펴보고 이에 대한당시 독일 고고학자들의 반응에 대해 논하였다. 동시에 나치 독일의 팽창주의 앞에 국가적 위기를 맞이한 비시정부의 고고학 관련 정책과 발굴조사의 특징을 분석하면서, 나치정부와 비시정부의 공통점과 차이점에대해 논하였다. 범게르만주의적 관점에서 나치의 인종주의 고고학을 완성한 사람은 구스타프 코시나이다. 그는 유럽 언어들과 산스크리트어 간의 유사성을 근거로 상정된 북방 인도 게르만 민족이라는 신화적 성격이짙은 고대 민족이 존재했다고 주장했다. 1차 대전이 독일의 패전으로 끝나고 나치 고고학자들은 코시나의 이론을 받아들여, 그 위에 국가 이데올로기적 색채가 강한 고고학을 발전시켰다. 그들은 게르만 민족의 우수성이 인종적 특성에서 기인했으며, 과거 게르만족이 점유했던 모든 영토는 게르만족의 소유가 되어야 한다고 확신했다. 프랑스 북부를 점령하자마자, 나치 고고학자들은 <문화유산보호국>을 설치하고 점령지의 ‘문화유산을 보호한다’는 명분 아래 문화재 목록을 신속하게 작성하였다. 이목록은 독일이 패전했을 때를 대비한 프랑스 문화재 반출목록이기도 했다. 2차 대전 초기의 패전 이후 비시정부도 나치와 유사한 방식으로 자신들의 패배를 역사적 모델을 통해서 정당화하고자 하였다. 페탱주의자들도 역사 속에서 현재의 패전과 유사한 사례를 찾았고 그 결과 골족을 재발견했다. 로마에 정복당한 골족은 그로 인해 궁극적으로 야만의 상태를 벗어나서 갈로-로마 문명을 꽃피우게 되었다는 점을 비시정부는 강조했다. 이와 같은 역사 재해석은 현재 프랑스가 독일에 비록 패했지만 향후 유럽민족국가가 건국되는 시기에, 프랑스가 독일을 제치고 중심국가로 설 것이라는 비시정부의 낙관 어린 희망도 담고 있었다. 이처럼 프랑스 중앙정부는 골족을 강조했지만, 북부 제3제국 점령지에서는 나치 고고학자와 현지의 아마추어 고고학자들은 게르만족의 하나인 프랑크족을강조하였다.
정도의 차이는 있지만, 비시정부는 고고학을 프랑스의 국가적 위기 상황을 극복하기 위한 수단으로 인식했다는 점에서 나치정부와 닮아 있었다. 독일이 게르만 민족의 이상화를 통해서 ‘민족통합의식’을 강화했듯이, 프랑스는 골족을 이상화함으로써 ‘분열’을 막으려 했다. 패전 때문에국가주의적 색채가 강한 고고학이 탄생하게 되었다는 점도 양국 모두 같다. 1차 대전의 패배가 나치즘을 불러일으켰듯이, 프랑스 공방전의 패배가 페탱이즘을 불러일으켰다. 그런 측면에서 2차 대전 당시 적대적 공생관계에 있었던 독일과 프랑스의 고고학은 패배 의식에 사로잡힌 자의 일종의 자기암시를 위한 최면술이었으며, ‘패자의 이데올로기’를 정당화하기 위한 수단이었다. 현재의 굴욕감과 상실감을 망각하기 위한 ‘위대한조상 찾기’ 운동에 고고학이 선두에 나선 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, I first look at the origins and characteristics of Nazi archaeology and discuss about the reaction of German archaeologists at the time to Nazism. Next, discussing Vichy government's response to archaeology and excavation research in the face of the national crisis in the face of expansionism in Nazi Germany, the two sides revealed the similarities and differences between the Nazi and Vichy governments. From a pan-Germanian standpoint, it is Kossina who has perfected the Nazi racist archaeology. He was convinced of the existence of an ancient nation with a deep mythical character of northern Indo-Germans, which was based on similarities between European languages and Sanskrit. After World War I, Nazi archaeologists who accepted Kossina's theory argued that they could identify the ethnic identity through the cultural sphere, believing that the superiority of Germanic prehistoric culture was derived from its ethnic characteristics, and that all territories formerly occupied by the Germanic people should be owned by the Germans. As soon as Germany occupied the northern part of France, Nazi archaeologists established the Cultural Heritage Protection Agency and organized a list of cultural assets under the pretext of systematically protecting the occupied territories. The list was also a list of cultural assets taken out in case Germany was defeated. The Vichy government, headed by Petin, who stood in southern France after the defeat, tried to justify its defeat through historical models in a similar way to the Nazis.
Pettangists found historical events and figures similar to the defeat of the day in their history, and as a result found the model in the Golmae, which had been regarded as the ancestor of the French. By their logic, the defeat in Alessia brought the Gaule under Roman rule, but ultimately the Gaulo-Roman civilization into full bloom. Following such precedents, it had its own outlook for Petinism that although France had lost to Nazi Germany, it could overtake Germany as the main pillar when the European nation was founded in the future.
However, it is a strange contrast to the fact that the French culture, a German tribe, was emphasized in the free region where the Vichy government was established. As shown in the above example, the Vichy government resembles the Nazi government in that it recognized archaeology as a means to overcome France's national crisis. If Germany had strengthened the "national community" consciousness through the idealization of the German people, France tried to consolidate the "national community" consciousness by idealizing the goal people. It is also similar that the two countries' national ideologues were strengthened with the defeat and spread rapidly throughout the world. Just as the defeat in the First World War sparked the Nazi movement, the defeat in the French Civil War sparked the Petangist movement. In that context, the archaeology of Germany and France during World War II was a kind of hypnosis for the self-reflection of those who were obsessed with defeat consciousness.
Archaeology took the lead in the "Finding the Great Ancestors" project to forget the current humiliation and loss.
