교단 분열 이전의 한국성결교회전도활동에 관한 연구 –1945년~1961년 (Research on the Evangelistic Activities of the Korea Holiness Church before the Denominational Split(1945-1961))

초록

본 논문은 해방 이후부터 교단이 분열되기 이전까지 한국성결교회의 전도활동에 관한 논문이다. 한국성결교회는 전도하면서 세워진 교단이라는 자부심이 있지만, 교단 정신의 정체성이 되는 전도활동에 관한연구가 학문적으로 체계적으로 이루어지지 못하였다. 필자가 박사논문으로 연구한 주제인 “해방 이전의 초기 한국성결교회의 전도활동에관한 연구”가 유일하였다. 이에 본 논문은 초기 성결교회의 전도활동에관한 연구의 맥을 이어, 해방 이후부터 교단 분열 이전까지의 전도활동을연구하여 한국성결교회의 전도의 흐름과 발전을 위한 초석을 놓고자하였다. 기본적인 연구가 선행되지 못하고는 학문적인 연구와 발전이전무할 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
이 시기의 전도활동의 특징은 첫째, 초기 성결교회의 전도활동의맥을 이어 직접전도가 활성화되고 있었다는 점이다. 교단이 중심이되어 각각의 전도대(傳道隊)를 조직하여 운영하였으며, 또한 교단의각 기관을 통하여 직접전도활동을 하기도 하였다. 특별히 이성봉 목사라는 걸출한 전도자의 활동으로 초기성결교회의 전도모습에 견줄 정도로활발하게 직접전도활동이 실천되었다. 또한 교단의 희년을 맞이하여희년전도대를 조직하여 활동하기도 하였다.
둘째, 해방 이후 국내의 어려운 현실적 상황에 직면하여 간접전도가 활성화되기 시작하였다. 엘마 길보른이 조성한 기금으로 자금 확보가선행되었고, 또한 동양선교회 J. B. 크라우스가 세계구호위원회의 일원으로 활동하며 막대한 구호금과 구호품들의 국내 공급 통로가 되면서성결교회의 간접전도활동은 더욱 활성화되었다. 성결교회는 교육사업과 사회사업을 서서히 전개하다가 나라를 재건하는 구호사업에 본격적으로 뛰어들게 된 것이다.
셋째, 이 시기의 간접전도활동의 활성화는 직접전도의 정신을약화시키는 결과도 초래하여 교단 분열의 불씨가 되기도 하였다. 지혜롭게 처리하였다면, 통전적인 안목에서 균형 잡힌 전도 활동을 실천할수 있었으며 더 발전된 전도활동과 결과를 낳을 수 있었지만 결과는그렇지 못하였다.
본 논문의 연구를 통하여 한국성결교회에서 전도활동이 교단에끼치는 영향이 얼마나 지대한지 다시 한 번 확증되었다. 적어도 교단분열 이전까지는, 전도활동이 성결교단을 이해하고 성장시키며 심지어는 분열에까지 지대한 영향을 끼친 것이다. 이에 본 논문과 같은 선행적인 연구들을 기초로 전도활동에 관한 더 발전적인 연구가 있어지기를기대한다.

영어초록

This paper is about the evangelistic activities of the KoreaHoliness Church before the denominational Split. The KoreanHoliness Church has self-esteem called the communion builtthrough evangelism, but there was not study of evangelisticactivities that become identity of the communion mindsystematically. “Research on the Evangelistic Activities of theearly Korea Holiness Church before the liberation” which isthe writer's doctoral dissertation is unique. Hereupon, this paperwould like to lay the foundation stone for the advancementof the evangelism of the Korea Holiness Church by studyingof the evangelistic activities of the Korea Holiness Church beforethe denominational Split followed the research on theEvangelistic Activities of the early Korea Holiness Church. That'swhy there are no scientific study and development withoutbasic research is preceded.
The first characteristic of the evangelistic activities on thistime is that direct evangelism is invigorated after the evangelistic activities of the early Korea Holiness Church. The communionorganized each missionary team actively, also the directevangelistic activities are progressing thorough each institutionof the communion. Especially, the direct evangelistic activitieswere practiced enough to compare in the evangelism of theearly Kore Holiness Church by work of the Reverend Lee sungbong who is a prominent evangelist. Also, ‘the year ofjubilee-missionary team’ was organized and worked on positivelines for the year of jubilee of the communionSecond, indirect evangelism was begun to activate facingin domestic difficult realistic circumstance after liberation.
Because the security of funds was preceded by the fund whichElmer Kilborun has raised, and also J.B. Crouse was engagedas a member in World Relief Committee. As a result, the indirectevangelistic activities of the Korea Holiness Church wereactivated better becoming the domestic supply passageway ofhuge alms and supplies. The Korea Holiness Church is jumpedin relief work that reconstruct the country in earnest whiledeveloping educational work and social work slowly.
Third, the activation of indirect evangelistic activities onthis time caused the result that weaken the spirit of directevangelism. This result is the cause of the Denominational Split.
If this problem was handled wisely, the Korea Holiness Churchcould practice a balanced evangelistic activities in a holisticperspective, and could produce improved evangelistic activitiesand better results.
How enormous the effect that evangelistic activities have influenced the communion in the Korea Holiness Church isconfirmed again through the research of this paper. At least,evangelistic activities have helped the growth of the KoreaHoliness Church until the Denominational Split, and even hadgreat influence on the Denominational Split. Hereupon, I expectthat more expansive study about evangelistic activities whichis based on advanced researches such as this paper is continued.
