초록

The May Fourth Movement in 1919 was the most important researching subject that infiltrated modern Chinese history. In particular, the May Fourth Movement developed into a comprehensive social and political reform movement covering the entire Chinese traditional culture. Based on The new cultural movement and its ideal ‘Democracy’ and ‘Science' passed on its renaissance torch to the May Fourth Movement. The centered on young intellectuals and students hoped to transform traditional China into a modern democratic individual, society, and Nation. The centenary commemoration of the May fourth movement and it's ideal ‘Democracy’ and ‘Science' still had an impact on the 2019 Hong Kong democratization movement. It seems that we need a more comprehensive and contextual in-depth understanding of the May Fourth movement on these 100 years. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement in 2019, international academic conferences and forums have been held around the world and published important articles, researches, and books. However, standing in 2019 and after, we may need to consider why retrogression of narrow patriotism, exclusive nationalism, and even racism, which was disputed by The New Cultural Movement and The May Fourth Movement, is on the rise all of the worlds. At this moment, What are the real historical significances of the May Fourth Movement that we have to ask? Why it's ideal ‘Democracy’ and ‘Science' from 100 years ago still effective in our times? After a hundred years, it seems like we are going back to the original point of the question. Will the ideal ‘Democracy’ and ‘Science' and critical spirit will be an answer for today? The answer may have been given to us and maybe some of us dare not to face it or even do not want to have it. It all depends on how we face up the history and the present. A hundred years of researches, interpretations, and all kinds of narratives and discourses with vivid embracement and reconcile all the controversial issues made the May Fourth Movement is some sort of ideal nostalgia, historical rhetoric, and the power for the real weapon to recreate new ideal of ‘Democracy’ and ‘Science'. Now we have to gaze past hundred years and the next hundred years, and also face how to make future historical participant-observers not feel sad and failed, but hope that the history of the Chinese Renaissance will flourish again, just like It realized the enthusiasm, persistence, and endeavor of the younger generation and new cultural movement a hundred years ago.
