女俠 聶隱娘을 바라보는 두 시선 - 唐傳奇 <聶隱娘>과 허우샤오시엔(侯孝賢)의 영화 ‘자객 섭은낭(The Assasin)’의 비교 (A Comparative Study on Different Two Views Towards a Woman Knighterrant Nieyinniang - Different Perspectives Represented by T‘ang Chuan - qi ’Nieyinniang’ and Houxiaoxian’s Movie ‘The Assassin’)

초록

이 논문에서는 唐 傳奇의 <聶隱娘> 이야기와 대만 영화 감독 허우샤오시엔(侯孝賢)의 ‘자객 섭은낭(The Assasin)’을 비교분석하였다. 허우샤오시엔은 청년 시절 탐독한 당 전기 <섭은낭> 이야기로부터 영화적인 영감을 얻고 이를 자신의 시각으로 변용하였는데 그 결과 원작과 몇 가지 점에서 변별점을 지니게 되었다. 이 논문은 다음과 같은 내용으로 구성된다. 먼저 당 전기의 시선과 허우샤오시엔의 시선에 따라 달라진 두 서사의 구성 요소를 비교분석하였다. 이 과정에서 당 전기의 섭은낭은 목적지향적인 반면 영화의 섭은낭은 살인 앞에서 갈등하는 인간적인 정서를 지닌 것으로 파악되었다. 또한 당 전기에서는 그 당시 藩鎭의 節度使 사이의 정치적 암투 속에서 道敎의 술법과 신출귀몰한 무예에 능란한 여협 그 자체에 집중한다. 이는 당 전기 <섭은낭>의 작가 裴鉶이 도교 문화에 심취한 인물이었음과 유관하다. 이에 비해 ‘자객 섭은낭’에서는 섭은낭의 도술에 초점을 두지 않고 오히려 번진 안에서 중앙 정부에 대해 주전파와 주화파로 나뉘어져 다투는 내용을 묘사한다. 이 부분은 현 시기 대만이 중국에 대해 지니는 복잡한 정치적 입장을 상징한다. 그리고 허우샤오시엔 영화에서는 이미 대만의 독특한 정치적 상황을 영화를 통해 드러낸 바가 있었다. 그런데 이들 두 서사 모두 고전소설과 현대 영화라는 차이가 있지만 ‘唐’이라는 중국의 옛 왕조를 배경으로 삼았다는 지점에서 두 서사의 시선은 일치된다. 중국 역사상 가장 번영된 왕조의 문화를 재현하고자 하는 허우샤오시엔의 시도는 그 시기의 서사인 <섭은낭>과 조우하며 ‘여협’이라는 특별한 캐릭터에 집중하게 되었다. 이 과정에서 당 전기는 허우샤오시엔에게 영감을 제공하고 현대 영화로 변용되는 원천의 역할을 한 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, I focused on analyzing different perspectives reflected on a novel, Nieyinniang of Tang Chuan-qi, and ‘The Assassin’ by Houxiaoxian’s movie. Both works based on the story of a woman knighterrant Nieyinniang in Tang dynasty in the 8th century and described Nieyinniang as a great heroine in political chaos, when Tang dynasty experienced a decentralized administration. Taiwanese movie director Houxiaoxian adapted T‘ang Chuan-qi ‘Nieyinniang’ for his movie ‘the Assassin’, and, compared to Nieyinniang in novel, Houxiaoxian showed a different lead character of Nieyinniang. I found three distinct features reflected on Nieyinniang of Tang Chuan-qi and the Assassin by Houxiaoxian’s movie as follow. First of all, the basic personality of Nieyinniang was differently described in Houxiaoxian’s Movie ‘The Assassin’. In a novel, Nieyinniang was depicted as a cruel assassin, who pledged absolute loyalty to her master and just completed her duty as a killer. On the contrary, Houxiaoxian emphasized humanistic side of Nieyinniang, so Nieyinniang in movie was an emotional killer, who engaged inner conflicts between her job as a murderer and great humanity as a woman. In addition, the political state represented by the movie ‘The Assassin’ showed a slight difference in comparison with T‘ang Chuan-qi ’Nieyinniang’. The background of the novel was set during the 8th century in Tang Dynasty, and political conflicts among local governments was generally described. However, Houxiaoxian elaborated on political situation in Tang Dynasty where the warlike party clashed with the party members who avoided war. It is assumed that in his movie Houxiaoxian wanted to reflect current political situation of Taiwan closely related to China.
Furthermore, the Taoistic elements that was broadly reflected on T‘ang Chuan-qi ’Nieyinniang’ was missing in a movie ‘The Assasin’. In a novel, Taoism thought was presented as a significant device to make a character ‘Nieyinniang’ ; ‘Nieyinniang’ put efforts into prcaticing and performing Taoist martial arts and this special skill plays an important role for her to accomplish a task as a liller. However, Houxiaoxian in his movie excluded Taoistic sentiment and highlighted fundamental emotions as a human-being and a vulnerable woman. For instance, although ‘Nieyinniang’ was an expert at Taoist magic and martial arts just like T’ang Chuan-qi ‘Nieyinniang’, she betrayed master’s confidence and secluded herself from the world. Also, in the movie ‘The Assassin’, ‘Nieyinniang’ sought to overcome inner conflicts as relying on Boy ‘Mojing’ rather than fulfilling a required duty as a killer.
To sum up, there must be distinct features between chinese classical narratives and modern movie in terms of time period, format, and style used to create each work. It turned out that different perspectives were represented on T‘ang Chuan-qi ’Nieyinniang’ and Houxiaoxian’s movie ‘The Assassin’. As considering these factors, Houxiaoxian might want to mirror the glorious period of T’ang Dynastv in the Chinese history and reproduce cultural legacy and assets in his movie ‘The Assassin.
