‘한문 고전 읽기’에서의 고전 교육 실천 방안 -｢孝女知恩傳｣과 ｢貧女養母｣의 비교 독서를 중심으로- (Classics education practice plan in ‘Reading Chinese classics’ -Focusing on comparative reading of “The Life of a Filial Daughter Ji-eun” and “A Poor Woman Supports Her Mother”-)

초록

이 글은 2022 개정 고등학교 교육과정에 신설된 ‘한문 고전 읽기’ 과목의 실행을 위한 자료로 기획되었다. 동아시아의 한문 고전 중 한국 고대사를 다룬 『三國史記』와 『三國遺事』를 읽기 자료로 주목했고, 특히 각각에 수록된 ｢孝女知恩傳｣과 ｢貧女養母｣가 같은 역사적 사건을 다루고 있다는 데 착안하여, 이 두 글에 대한 비교 독서를 ‘한문 고전 읽기’의 실행 방안으로 제시했다.
｢효녀지은전｣과 ｢빈녀양모｣는 신라 진성여왕 때 한 가난한 미혼여성이 장애인 어머니를 부양하기 위해 스스로를 노비로 팔았다가 그 사실을 알게 된 어머니가 슬퍼하고 고통스러워하는 것을 보고 진정한 사랑과 효의 의미를 깨닫는 과정을 중요하게 다루었다. 또한 효종랑이라는 귀족 남성의 선행을 매개로 모녀의 사정이 알려지며 그들에게 국가 차원의 보상이 주어진 일을 후반부에서 중요하게 언급하고 있어 통일신라말의 사회경제 상황을 구체적으로 재현한 측면도 있다.
고려 중기의 귀족이자 고위관료인 김부식과 대몽항쟁기 고려 불교계의 정점에 있던 승려인 일연은 이 사건을 역사로 편찬하며, 어머니의 마음과 목소리를 재현하는 방식에서 유사한 태도를 보였다. 즉 딸에게 의존할 수밖에 없던 눈먼 어머니는 딸이 자기 몸을 팔아 노비가 된 것을 알기 어려운 처지였으나, 딸의 고통의 대가로 차려진 좋은 밥을 먹는 것만으로 육체적 고통을 느끼고 딸에게 그 의미를 묻는다. 『삼국사기』와 『삼국유사』는 모두 이 장면을 흡사하게 재현하며 어머니의 목소리와 마음을 뚜렷이 되살렸는데, 이는 결국 그 안에 함축된 어머니의 사랑을 깨닫는 것이 진정한 효라는 공통된 주제의식으로 이어진다.
한편 두 작품은 상당히 다른 면모를 지니고 있기도 한데, 그 대비는 각각의 후일담을 통해 선명히 드러난다. 『삼국사기』의 경우 모녀가 사회경제적 보상을 받는 과정에서 역할을 한 효종랑을 더 부각하는 경향을 보이고, 후일담 역시 이 귀족 남성에게 집중했는데, 이는 당대의 사회상을 좀 더 넓은 범위에서 제시한다. 반면 『삼국유사』는 모녀가 받은 집과 막대한 재물을 희사하여 ‘양존사’라는 절을 세웠다는 사찰연기담으로 마무리되는데, 이 결말은 가난과 장애로 고통받던 모녀가 서로 간의 사랑을 깨달았을 뿐 아니라 그 이후 자신들이 받은 사회의 온정을 불교신앙으로 승화시킨 맥락까지 보여준다.
이와 같이 ｢효녀지은전｣과 ｢빈녀양모｣라는 두 글에 대한 비교 독서는, 역사와 문학을 아우르는 폭넓은 시각으로 한문 고전에 다가갈 가능성을 제시한다.

영어초록

This article was planned as material for the implementation of the ‘Reading Chinese Classics’ subject newly established in the 2022 revised high school curriculum. Among East Asia's classical Chinese classics, I focused on Samguksagi and Samgukyusa, which deal with Korea's ancient history. In particular, based on the fact that “The Life of a Filial Daughter Ji-eun” and “A Poor Woman Supports Her Mother” contained in each book deal with the same historical event, a comparative reading of these two texts was used as an implementation plan for “Reading Chinese classics” presented.
“The Life of a Filial Daughter Ji-eun” and “A Poor Woman Supports Her Mother” originate from an incident in which a poor single woman sold herself as a slave during the reign of Queen Jinseong of Silla to support her disabled mother. And these two articles deal with the important story of how a woman realizes the meaning of true love and filial piety after seeing her mother sad and in pain when she found out about it. In addition, in the latter part of these articles, it is mainly mentioned that the mother and daughter's situation became widely known through the good deeds of a noble man named Hyojongrang, and the mother and daughter were given economic and social compensation. Through these contents, we can access the historical significance of the event in the context of the late Unified Silla period.
Kim Bu-sik, an aristocrat and high-ranking official in the mid-Goryeo period, and Ilyeon, a monk at the top of the Goryeo Buddhist community during Mongol invasion period, compiled these events into history. They showed similar attitudes in the way they recreated the heart and voice of her disabled mother. In other words, the blind mother, who had no choice but to depend on her daughter, was in a difficult position to realize that her daughter had sold her body and become a slave. However, the mother feels physical pain just by eating the good meal prepared in exchange for her daughter's pain, and asks her daughter what it means. Samguksagi and Samgukyusa both reproduce this scene in a similar way, clearly reviving the mother's voice and heart. This ultimately leads to a common theme that true filial piety is realizing the mother's love implied within the voice.
On the other hand, the two articles have quite different aspects, and the contrast is clearly revealed through their later stories. In the case of Samguksagi, there is a tendency to highlight Hyojongrang, who played a role in the process of the mother and daughter receiving socioeconomic compensation, and the later stories also consist of content about this noble man. These descriptions present the social picture of the time in a broader scope. On the other hand, Samgukyusa ends with the temple origin story that a mother and daughter donated the house and enormous wealth they received to build a temple called Yangjonsa. The name means ‘temple of the two noble people’. This ending shows the context in which the mother and daughter, who suffered from poverty and disability, not only realized their love for each other, but also sublimated the warmth they received from society into their Buddhist faith.
In this way, the comparative reading of the two texts, “The Life of a Filial Daughter Ji-eun” and “A Poor Woman Supports Her Mother”, presents the possibility of approaching the Chinese classics from a broad perspective encompassing history and literature.
