불/가능한 ‘환대’의 서사-손창섭의 「가부녀」를 중심으로 ((Im)possible Hospitality: A case of Son, Changsup’s Novel, “Kapunyeo”)

초록

이 글은 손창섭의 「가부녀」를 대상으로 종교나 당위의 측면에서가 아니라 평범한 일상에 잠재되어 있는 타자의 윤리를 탐색한다. 레비나스의 타자이론에 토대하여 반관반민업체의 모범사원인 강 노인이 소유의 주체에서 환대의 주체로 이행하는 과정을 살펴봄으로써, 구체적인 생활의 층위에 잠재되어 있는 타자를 향한 윤리를 드러낸다.
먼저, 말년의 강 노인이 봉착한 결여와 이를 메우기 위한 가부녀의 환상이 갖는 문제점을 검토한다. 종숙이라는 소녀를 매개로 돌봄과 배려의 주체로 이행하는 강 노인의 변화에 접혀 있는 동일자적 한계에 초점을 맞춘다. 강 노인이 주도한 가부녀 관계 속에서 순종하는 딸에 비유되거나 취약한 피해자로 간주되는 종숙의 대상화를 드러냄으로써, 종숙과 마주하되, 그녀의 얼굴 대신 자신의 환상만을 투사하는 가부녀 관계는 실패로 귀결될 수밖에 없음을 확인한다.
다음 장에서는, 가부녀 관계의 실패를 통해 가부녀의 꿈에 접혀 있던 타자에의 지향을 추적한다. 실패로 종결된 가부녀 관계가 담론차원에서 동일성의 철회와 타자에의 지향으로 이어진다는 사실을 감정이입, 그림자 이미지의 분석 등을 통해 밝혀냄으로써, 강 노인의 결여가 동일자의 확장인 가족이 아니라, 타자의 부재에 연원함을 드러낸다. 나아가, 딸, 애인, 아내로 변이되는 종숙의 비유가 결국 거룩한 애정의 표상으로 수렴된다는 데 착안하여 자신을 중심으로 한 관계를 무너뜨리는 동일성의 철회와 타자의 현현을 확인한다.
마지막 장에서는, 주체/타자의 관계 전도와 그 실현인 재산의 증여를 통해 절대적 수동성과 응답하기의 윤리를 탐색한다. 돌봄과 선의의 주체인 강노인과 그 대상인 종숙의 구도에서 힘을 획득하는 것은 그녀라는 사실에서 타자를 환대하는 절대적 수동성의 주체를 확인한다. 더불어, 전 재산을 증여하고 어둠 속으로 사라지는 그의 선택에서 이미 타자와의 관계 속에 있기에 타자에게 응답해야 하는 주체의 책임을 읽어낸다. 종숙에 대한 마음을 오해한 대상을 향하여 강 노인은 전 재산의 증여로써 자신을 해명하는데 이는 기소되어 타자의 심판 앞에 선 연후에야 자신을 구현하는 주체의 윤리적 궤적에 다름 아니다. 증여는 주체보다 우선하는 타자에 대한 책임의 윤리를 드러낸다.

영어초록

This article examines targeting Son Chang-seop's 「Kabunyeo (Failure to be a father)」 focusing on the ethics of otherness latent in ordinary daily life. Based on Levinas' theory of the otherness, it analysis one old man’s story of transition from the subject of ownership to the subject of hospitality, revealing the ethics toward the other latent in a specific layer of his life.
First, this article examines the missing point that the old man Kang encountered in his later years, and the problems of the fantasies of becoming a “father” of a girl who is his co-worker to make up for it. This article focuses on the limits of the same(le même) folded in the change of Old Man Kang, who undergoes transition into a subject of care and consideration through involvement with a girl named Jong-suk. Jong-suk is desctibed as an obedient daughter or a vulnerable victim in the father-daughter relationship led by Old Man Kang. This explains why Kang’s attept to make father-daughter relationship is bound to end in failure. It is because he faces Jong-suk, but only projects his own fantasy instead of her face.
The chapter 3 analyses the failure of building father-daughter relationship and traces the presence of the other shrouded by Kang’s strong desire for making Jong-suk his pseudo-daughter. Based on the theories of empathy and shadow images, this article reveals the fact that a father-daughter relationship that ended in failure leads to the withdrawal of identity and the orientation toward the other at the level of discourse. Furthermore, focusing on the fact that the metaphor of Jong-suk, which transforms into a daughter, lover, and wife, eventually converges into a symbol of holy love, it confirms the withdrawal of identity and the manifestation of others that break down relationships centered on oneself.
In the last chapter, absolute passiveness(obedience) and the ethics of responding are explored through the reversal of the relationship between the subject/other, which is realised in his giving all his property to her. In the relationship with Kang, the subject of caring and goodwill, Jongsuk’s position is from the recipient of Kang’s caring to one who hold real power. The last chapter focuses on such change, from which it explores Levinas’ absolute passiveness and ethical obligation for the subject to treat the other with hospitality. Furthermore, in his choice to bestow all his property and disappear into the darkness, we read the responsibility of the subject to respond to others because he is already in a relationship with others.
Kang settles up false accusation aginast him under misappreciation by donating all his property, which is nothing other than manifest of the ethical responsbility of the subject who realizes himself only after being indicted and standing before the judgment of others. Gifting reveals the ethics of responsibility for the other that takes superiority to the subject.
