≪삼국유사≫ <도화녀비형랑>조에 보이는 ‘귀신’ 세력 (Goblins' Power in the Dohwanyeobihyeongnang section of the Samguk Yusa)

초록

≪삼국유사≫ 도화녀비형랑조는 진지왕에 대한 기록인데, 오히려 그가 폐위된 뒤 영혼이 관계하여 낳은 아들 비형랑의 행적이 자세하다. 이 條는 진지왕이 정치를 어지럽게 하였고 다소 문란했다는 사실을 내비치는 의도이기도 하지만 비형랑에 대한 소개는 의외로 우호적이다. 비형랑은 밤나들이를 즐기며 무리를 이끌고 다리놓기 등의 공사를 썩 잘한다. 그의 행적을 볼 때 진지왕의 아들이며 황룡사구층탑을 감독한 용춘과 일치한다. 그 자신이 화랑이며, 주요 관직을 받았고, 전장에 참여하는 등 비형랑은 비록 왕위계승의 범위에서는 벗어났지만 진평왕·선덕여왕대에 여전히 무시 못할 존재다. 설화의 배경은 그를 후원하는 세력 혹은 그가 다시 권좌에 오르기를 바라는 편에서 비형랑의 비범한 능력을 선전했다고 생각된다.
≪삼국유사≫ 도화녀비형랑조에서는 비형과 그 무리를 귀신이라고 하였지만 그 성격은 도깨비에 가깝다. 그러므로 도화녀비형랑조와 같은 내용을 실으면서도 ≪신증동국여지승람≫에서는 그 마지막에 비형을 신라 두두리[도깨비]의 시조라는 말을 덧붙였다. 그뿐 아니라 최초의 두두리 비형랑은 그 뒤로도 경주사람들에게 존숭을 받는다고 하였다. 신라 중고기는 동륜계 즉 진평—선덕—진덕왕으로 이어지는 성골임금시대였다. 이들 혈통에 가리어 왕위계승권에서 밀려난 세력이 사륜계 즉 용춘—김춘추(무열왕) 계열이다. 진덕왕 이후 다시 김춘추가 무열왕으로 즉위함으로써 사륜계의 세상이 되었는데, 도화녀비형랑조는 이들 사륜계가 동륜계 못지않게 능력이 있고 백성을 먹여 살릴 수 있다는 것을 홍보하는 내용이다.
두 혈통은 그 신앙기반에서도 대조적이다. 동륜계가 불교의 교리를 원용하고 고승들이 거기에 동원되는 데 비해 사륜계는 재래의 귀신 그 가운데서도 도깨비의 권위를 빌리는 등 전통적 사고를 고수하고 있다. 비록 나라의 시책이 불교를 내세웠을지라도 전통적 사유와 가치는 불교라는 新思潮에 언제나 부담이 되는 존재임을 도화녀비형랑조는 말해주고 있다.

영어초록

The Dohwanyeobihyeongnang section of the Samguk Yusa is a record about King Jinji, but the record about his being dethroned and having a child named Bihyeongnang after a woman had relations with his soul is more detailed. The intention of this section seems to be to expose the fact that King Jinji did not administer his kingdom properly and that his reign was rather disorderly, but the depiction of his son Bihyeongnang is suprisingly friendly. Bihyeongnang enjoys going out at night and is good at leading his group and finishing construction projects such as building bridges. Viewing his record of performances, Bihyeongnang corresponds with the son of King Jinji Yongchun who supervised the construction of the nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa monastery. He himself being a hwarang, having received important government posts and having participated in the field of battle, although Bihyeongnang was not within the limits of succeeding to the throne, nevertheless during the reign of King Jinpyeong and Queen Seondeok, Bihyeongnang was a figure that could not be disregarded. The background of the story seems to be that the extraordinary talents of Bihyeongnang were purposely propagated by his supporters in the hope that he would accede to the throne.
Although the Dohwanyeobihyeonnang section of the Samguk Yusa refers to Bihyeongnang and his group as ghosts, their character is closer to goblins. Therefore, although a story such as Dohwanyeobihyeongnang was carried(in the Samguk Yusa), also in the conclusion of Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungram Bihyeongnang is mentioned as the father of the goblins of Silla. Also the first goblin Bihyeongnang was also later worshipped by the people of Gyeongju. The Middle-Old Period of Silla was the age of the Holy Bone Monarch Period, or the Dongnyun lineage of Jinpyeong—Seondeok—Jindeok. Overshadowed by the above (Dongnyun) lineage and obstructed from succeeding to the throne was the Saryun lineage of Yongchun and Gim Chunchu(Muyeol). As Gim Chunchu acceded to the throne after the reign of Queen Jindeok as King Muyeol, the Saryun lineage gained the ascendancy and the tale of Dohwanyeobihyeongnang was used to emphasize that the Saryun lineage was just as competent as the Dongnyun lineage and just as able to feed and support the populace.
The two lineages also contrast sharply in their religious beliefs. Whereas the Dongnyun lineage is firmly rooted in the teachings of Buddhism and high ranking monks are mobilized for that purpose, the Saryun lineage adheres to traditional beliefs such as that of goblins. The tale of Dohwanyeobihyeongnang shows that although the national ideology was that of the new religion of Buddhism, traditional beliefs and values continued to act as a burden to the new religion.
