가치의 구현자로서 비극 주인공의 행위에 대한 연구: 소포클레스의 비극 『아이아스』, 『트라키스의 여인들』, 『안티고네』를 중심으로 (A Study on the Praxis of the Tragic Heroes as a Moral Agent in Sophocles’ Tragedies: "Aias", "Trachiniae", "Antigone")

초록

본고는 소포클레스의 비극 주인공, 아이아스, 데이아네이라, 안티고네를 선택하여 이들 비극 주인공이 어떤 딜레마 상황에서 숙고의 과정을 통해서 어떤 결정을 내리는지 정리하고, 그 결정에서 어떤 가치를 구현하고 그 가치 구현의 동력이 되는 감정은 무엇인지 규명하고자 했다. 아이아스는 숙고를 통해서 영웅적 ‘아레테’의 가치와 ‘명예(timē)’와 ‘명성(kleos)’의 가치를 구현하는데, 이들 가치 구현의 동력이 되는 감정은 ‘분노(thymos)’와 ‘수치(aidōs)’이다. 데이아네이라는 숙고를 통해서 ‘결혼’의 가치와 ‘명예(timē)’와 ‘명성(kleos)’의 가치를 구현하는데, 이들 가치 구현의 동력이 되는 감정은 ‘에로스(erōs)’와 ‘분노(thymos)’이다. 안티고네는 숙고를 통해서 ‘혈족의 관습’/‘친애(philia)’/‘가족의 노모스(nomos)’의 가치를 구현하고 ‘명예(timē)’와 ‘명성(kleos)’의 가치도 구현한다. 이들 가치 구현의 동력이 되는 감정은 ‘분노(thymos)’와 ‘수치/존중(aidōs)’이다. 이처럼 소포클레스의 세 비극 주인공은 모두 공통적으로 ‘명예’와 ‘명성’의 가치를 구현하는 고귀하고 영웅적인 인물로 형상화되어 있다. 소포클레스가 아이스퀼로스와 비교하여 비극 주인공의 캐릭터 형상화 관점에서 어떤 성취를 이루었는지 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) 소포클레스는 ‘아레테’/‘고귀함’과 ‘무지’/‘과실’을 역설적으로 결합하여 인간 행위의 비극성을 부각한다. 이처럼 상이하거나 상반된 성격들을 결합하여 비극 주인공을 복합적으로 형상화했다. (2) 소포클레스의 비극 주인공은 숙고를 통해서 마침내 특정한 가치를 선택하여 구현함으로써 본래의 자기 정체성을 다시 정립한다. 여기에 작용하는 것은 영웅적 기질의 ‘분노(thymos)’이다. (3) 소포클레스의 비극 주인공은 폴리스와 같은 공동체의 가치에 대하여 가족/가정과 개인 영웅의 가치를 구현하는 결정을 내린다. 요컨대 소포클레스는 심리의 깊이와 인격의 의미에서 비극 주인공의 성격을 복합적으로 구성하여 비극적 자아의 주체적인 측면을 부각했다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper examines the actions of tragic heroes, such as Aias, Deianira, and Antigone, in Sophocles’ tragedies. Here, we wanted to explore how the tragic heros weigh their decisions in dilemmas, the values they seek to protect, and the emotions that motivate their actions.
The three tragic heroes, Aias, Deianira and Antigone, find themselves in difficult dilemmas, in which values collide and are incompatible, and the heroes determine their own paths through a deliberation process consisting of phantasia, recollection, and opining.
We first summarize and then evaluate the actions of the heroes. Aias decides to embody not the value of sōphrosynē but that of aretē, ‘honor (timē),’ and ‘fame (kleos).’ Aias is primarily driven by feelings of both ‘anger (thymos)’ and ‘shame (aidōs).’ Deianira decides to make use of the love potion in order to embody the value of ‘marriage’ and ‘family (oikos).’ Having involuntarily killed her husband (Heracles), she takes responsibility for that action of killing and commits suicide. The values she embodies ironically are ‘marriage,’ ‘honor,’ and ‘fame.’ Deianira’s main emotions are ‘love (erōs),’ ‘anger (thymos),’ and ‘shame (aidōs).’ Antigone decides to bury her brother Polynices in defiance of the edict of Creon, and confirms her decision in isolation by killing herself. The values Antigone strives for are the nomos of ‘family,’ ‘honor,’ and ‘fame.’ The emotions driving Antigone are ‘anger (thymos)’ and ‘respect (aidōs).’ These noble heroes are commonly characterized as individuals striving after the values of ‘honor’ and ‘fame.’ The Sophoclean heroes are significantly different from Aeschylean heroes in the following three aspects: (1) The Sophoclean heroes strive to embody values, remain in ignorance or make mistakes. Thus Sophocles combines aretē with ignorance/hamartia to make tragic heroes a mosaic of contrary entities. (2) The Sophoclean heroes, situated as they are in dilemmatic situations, discover the incompatibility of two values and decide to embody one of the two values. Their decision making is crystallized by killing themselves in anger. (3) The Sophoclean heroes, unlike Aeschylean heroes, tend to embody the value of the individual and family over the value of community and the polis.
In this way, Sophocles is understood to have contributed to developing the characters of the tragic hero with a degree of psychological depth and a sense of individuality.
