초록

야나기의 한국미론은 ‘悲哀의 美’, ‘民藝 美’, ‘不二의 美’의 세 단계를 거쳐 변해 갔다. 이러한 그의 사상 중 ‘悲哀의 美’ 부분은 끊임없이 비판되어져 왔고, 또 지금까지 우리에게 많은 영향을 미쳐왔다. 그의 저술 및 사상활동은 우리가 우리의 미감에 대해 생각하게 만들고 우리의 미학연구에 시발점 역할을 하였다는 긍정적 측면이 제시되기도 하지만, 조선의 아름다움에 대한 애정을 빌미로한 식민사관의 동정적 시각이었고 이것을 문화지배의 논리로서 이용하였을 뿐이라는 주장으로 일관되게 비판되어 내려왔다.
예술품의 감상은 주체적인 감상자의 시대. 사회. 계급집단. 문화배경 및 개인적 성격. 기질. 교양. 경력, 나아가서는 원래 가지고 있던 審美經驗과 審美理想 등등이 모두 커다란 역할을 한다고 하였다. 따라서 야나기가 말하는 한국의 미감이 어떤 배경과 기질, 경험에서 형성되었는지를 살펴본다면 그가 말하는 ‘조선의 미감’은 그 정체를 드러낼 것이다.
일본인의 정서에는 수동적으로 입는 의무를 말하는 온(恩)과 태어나자마자 생기는 무제한 적인 의무인 기무(義務)와 제한된 부채를 의미하는 기리(義理), 그리고 중국이나 한국과는 전혀 다르게 변모된 일본의 진(仁) 개념 그리고 자신의 욕망의 만족을 죄악시하지 않는 생각, 행복에 대해 늘 조심하는 습성을 키워오게 된 행복부정론이 만든 부족주의 등을 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 온, 기리, 기무 그리고 계층제도 속에서의 고통, 부족주의 등이 결국 ‘와비․사비’로 나타난 일본예술의 특징을 만들기도 하였고, 허락된 쾌락의 창구를 통해서 오감을 만족시킬 수 있게 되어 화려하고 절제되지 않은 장식으로 발산되기도 하였다. 또한 그들은 질서와 계층제도에 대한 신뢰를 갖고 있어 이것이 자연스럽게 조선에 대해서도 어떠한 계층을 형성하기를 시도하였을 것이다.　이와 함께 일본에는 유겡(幽玄), 와비(侘)․사비(寂), 모노노 아와레(物の 哀れ)라는 일반화된 일본인들의 미의식이 있다. 이러한 적요감, 스산함, 부족감, 쓸쓸함, 비애감은 야나기 이외의 외국인의 시선에 비친 다양한 조선의 미감과는 다르게 ‘비애의 미’ - 선의 예술, 백색의 미, 감추어진 문양, 애수의 환원염 - 를 만들게 된 것이다.
미의식은 시대가 변하고 인간이 변화하는 것과 같이 끊임없이 변화하여 절대적인 개념이 존재할 수 없다. 야나기를 둘러싸고 있던 시대의 상황, 정서, 미의식을 고찰해 볼 때 ‘비애의 미’는 당 시대의 가치관과 미의식으로부터 형성된 일본인, 야나기의 미의식이었음을 알 수 있다. 일본인의 적요감, 스산함, 부족감, 쓸쓸함, 비애감, 그리고 혼란스런 시대상황 속에서 만들어진 유겡, 와비․사비, 모노노 아와레의 미의식은 조선의 미술공예품을 보는 순간 충분히 감동하였을 것이며 야나기는 當代 일본인의 미감으로 조선의 미술공예품을 보았고 그러한 감동을 ‘悲哀의 美’라는 이름으로 조선의 미술공예품에 덮어씌운 것이다.

영어초록

The Korean Esthetic theory of Yanagi undergoes a change thorough 3 stages; the beauty of grief, the beauty of folk arts, and the beauty of non-duality. Among these 3 stages, the beauty of grief has been continually criticized, and also has had influence on us. Even though positive aspect is presented that his writings and ideological movement made us think of our esthetic sense and played an important role in starting our esthetic study, the controversy that they are a mere sympathetic view on the basis of colonial historical view under the pretense of beauty of Chosun, and were taken advantage of cultural dominance has been aroused consistently.
　
It it said that in the appreciation of arts, the factors such as the era of subjective viewer, society, the group of class, cultural background and personality, disposition, refinement, career, and furthermore, inherent beauty experience, and beauty ideal play a great role. Accordingly, if we investigate the background, disposition, and experience of the Korean Esthetic Sense, suggested by Yanagi, we will reveal its true identity.

There are several concepts: On(恩), which is the obligation, owed passively, Gimu(義務), which is the limitless obligation, generated with the birth, Giri(義理), which means the limited obligation in the sentiments of Japanese. In addition, the concept of virtue, which has the different form of China and Korea, the thinking way, which doesn't judge the person's satisfaction of desire as a sin, the principle of deficiency, which was created from the negation of happiness, being apprehensive of happiness, can be seen. Like this, On(恩) Giri(義理), Gimu(義務), the pain of class system, and the principle of deficiency contributed to the creation of Japanese art that is characterized by 'Wabi(侘)sabi(寂)', and they were exploded as a splendid and unrestrained ornament so as to satisfy 5 senses through the window of allowed pleasure. In addition, on the account that Japanese people had the trust towards the order and class system, it is estimated that they made an attempt to create a certain class in Chosun naturally.
　
There are other generalized beauty consciousness of Japan, called 'Yugeng(幽玄), Wabi(侘), Sabi(寂), Monono Ahwarae(物の哀れ). The sense of calm, chill, deficiency, loneliness, grief on the basis of Japanese beauty consciousness contributed to the beauty of grief, the art of line, the art of white, hidden pattern, and the reducing flames of pathos.
　
The absolute concept of beauty consciousness cannot be existed because it is changed ceaselessly like the change of era and man. In consideration of circumstance, sentiment, and beauty consciousness of an era, surrounded Yanagi, it is found that 'The beauty of grief' is consistent to the esthetic sense of Yanagi, formed by the value and beauty consciousness of those days. It is considered that owing to the sense of calm, chill, deficiency, loneliness, grief, and the beauty consciousness of Yugeng(幽玄), Wabi(侘), Sabi(寂), Monono Ahwarae(物の哀れ), created amid the chaotic situation of times, he received a deep impression on korean art crafts. It is said that Yanagi appreciated Korean art crafts with a Japanese esthetic sense of those days and expresses his impression on it as a name of the beauty of grief.
