초록

This paper investigated the oral tradition aspects as seen in the type of folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter". This type of folk ballad is constituted of the shocking story, where a woman calls down a curse upon a man who will marry another woman. As the result of a curse, he dies on his wedding day. It deals with the most important and substantial subjects of humanity such as love, marriage and death and it shows the various aspects of transference between narrative songs of Shamans and other types of folk ballads and classic novels. Therefore, it should be analysed very carefully.
The folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter" is composed with the core paragraphs and many auxiliary paragraphs. The core paragraphs are; A woman tempts a man to marry her - the woman curses him to die as the man refuses it. These paragraphs are the specific ones that are fixed in this type. The auxiliary paragraphs are combined with the core in the beginning or in the end. The auxiliary paragraphs in the beginning are combined as follows; A man lose his parents in his childhood, A woman adorns herself, A man remarries to get a concubine. The auxiliary paragraphs in the end are combined as follows; A bride laments over her misfortune, A bride and her dead bridegroom are united in the world of the dead. The auxiliary paragraphs are not fixed but combined in the other narrative genre.
This type of folk ballad "Mr. Lee's first daughter" could be classified into six subtypes; 'A maiden's temptation', 'A maiden's curse', 'A bride's lament', 'Union in the world of the dead', 'the remarriage to get a concubine', and the mixture type. As a result of investigation, almost all versions were found in the Yeongnam district. The subtype 'A maiden's temptation' has been transmitted in Honam and southern Yeongnam district, the subtype 'A maiden's curse' in the Yeongnam district overall, the subtype 'A bride's lament' in the southern Yeongnam district, the subtype 'the remarriage to get a concubine' in the north-western Yeongnam district, the subtype 'Union in the world of the dead' and the mixture type in the north-eastern Yeongnam district. In Honnam district, only the subtype 'A maiden's temptation' has been transmitted. These aspects of oral tradition show these types of folk ballads were formed in close relation with the circumstances of each district.
However, I couldn't find how the oral tradition aspects are related with the social and geographical circumstances of districts. This subject should be investigated in the continuing study through the enlargement of items and types of folk ballads.
