This study aims to discuss the love in Morrison's novel, Love. In this novel, Cosey, a patriarchal and capitalistic man, is an epicenter of hatred and conflict spreading among his family members. Whenever he sees his grand daughter Christine, he can't escape from remembering his father because her grey eyeballs remind him of his father. Therefore, he takes substitutive revenge on Christine. The most relentless of his substitutive revenges is found in his unexpected marriage with Christine's double Heed. Through this marriage, he causes Christine's pain of loss by separating her from her double and identifies her pain with his father's. Consequently, Cosey's marriage leads Christine and Heed to hate and damage each other. However, it is difficult to say that their hatred and conflict result from psychological loss of doubles.
This novel shows that materialistic desire or interest overwhelmingly dominates over its characters' emotion and how the desire or interest changes their emotion into chaos of hatred or conflict. Therefore, the love in this novel is invaded and damaged by materialistic desire which assumes the form of legacy-warring. The damaged love leads to hatred and conflict. And it also plays a role as a motive to make up for physical disabilities. In other words, it is paradoxically interwoven with its opposite emotion hatred. However, the final phase of Morrison's love is not paradoxically interwoven with hatred. It comes from forgiveness and reconciliation which laugh damaged emotion and shameful things caused by the past hatred and conflict away.
