아래로부터의 세계문학: 카자노바의 『세계문학공화국』을 넘어 (Toward World Literature from Below: Beyond Pascale Casanova’s The World Republic of Letters)

초록

오늘날 세계문학에 대한 열띤 논의가 다시 부상하고 있다. 자본과 문화의 지구화는 맑스가 말한 세계시장의 가능성을 현실화시켰고, 국경을 가로지르는 운송수단과 정보 미디어의 발달로 단순히 상품의 이동만이 아니라 노동의 이주와 문화의 횡단을 또한 용이하게 만들고 있다. 그에 따라 포스트식민 디아스포라 및 이주, 문화횡단, 문화번역, 지역적/지구적 상호작용, 코즈모폴리터니즘 등 새로운 문화적 현상들이 대거 등장하고 있다. 최근의 세계문학론은 이런 토픽들을 다루기 위해 등장하고 있다. 하지만 기존의 세계문학론, 특히 세계문학 논쟁을 촉발한 파스칼 카자노바의 세계문학론은 이런 새로운 문화현상들에 따라 세계문학론을 구성하고 있고 비교문학의 한계를 뛰어넘는 새로운 국제적 문학체계에 대한 새로운 통찰을 제기하고 있지만, 여전히 유럽중심적 인식을 벗어나지 못하고 전 세계의 수많은 지역적 세계문학들을 배제한다.
본 논문은 지구화의 문화적 현상들을 세계문학이 어떻게 비판적으로 다루고 있는가 하는 점보다는 기존의 세계문학을 지구화의 관점에서 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 그 이유는 세계문학의 비판적 대응에 초점을 둘 경우, 세계문학론 자체의 구성과정에 대한 비판적 인식이 배제될 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 오히려 기존의 세계문학론을 지구화의 관점에서 인식함으로써, 즉 세계문학론을 지구적인 것과 지역적인 것이 매개 없이 조우하는 오늘날의 지구적 현상과 맞대면시킴으로써 기존 세계문학의 한계와 새로운 세계문학의 가능성이 모두 검토되고 사고될 수 있을 것이다. 이런 관점에서 접근할 때 카자노바의 세계문학론은 지구화에 대한 낡고 유럽중심적인 이해에 근거하고 있음이 드러난다. 즉 그것은 유럽중심적 세계문학공화국을 강조함으로써 포스트식민 시대에 등장하는 다양한 지구적/지역적 세계문학들을 배제하고 있는 것이 드러난다. 이 글은 그 대안으로 민족국가의 약화와 지구적인 것/지역적인 것 간의 긴밀한 상호작용 때문에 지역적 문제가 곧 세계적 문제가 되는 현실을 극화하는 문학들을 새로운 세계문학의 가능성으로 받아들이고자 한다. 즉 이 글은 전지구적 근대성과 지역적 현실 간의 갈등과 모순을 무대에 올리는 문학이며, 지역과 장소를 뛰어넘는 세계문학이 아니라 지역과 장소에 바탕을 둔 아래로부터의 세계문학을 제안한다. 결국 이 논문은 유럽중심적 세계문학공간의 이후의 세계문학의 한 모습을 제시하고자 한다.

영어초록

Today there arise heated discussions and debates about world literature. The globalization of capital and culture makes real the possibility of the world market as Karl Marx said it and makes common not only the transnational movement of commodities but also the migration of people and their cultures. As a result, new cultural phenomena such as postcolonial diaspora and migration, transculturation, translation, global/local interaction, hybridity, cosmopolitanism and so on come to the surface. The recent rise of world literature comes from encountering these cultural phenomena. Among theories of world literature, Pascale Casanova’s theory is one of the most important and representative theories which have touched off the debate of world literature. Having even postcolonial cultural changes in mind, her idea of world literature gives an illuminating insight into the operation of world literary space. But it has limitation not to get out of the eurocentric idea of world literature by excluding ‘local’ and ‘national’ world literatures around the planet.
This paper tries to address world literature in terms of globalization rather than discuss globalization in terms of world literature. For the making processes of the theories of world literature itself are likely to be excluded in case that we pay attention just to the critical reaction of world literature to globalization. If we recognize the theories of world literature through globalization, namely, set them against globally cultural phenomena which take place because of immediate and unmediated interaction between the global and the local in the age of globalization, we can give both a critical examination into the existing world literature and a possibility for constructing new world literature. Approached in this terms, Casanova’s concept is revealed to draw upon still old-fashioned and eurocentric idea of globalization: it prevents many postcolonial and global/local world literatures from being considered by focusing upon the limited world republic of letters and its mere extension. As an alternative, this paper proposes an idea of world literature which puts on stage a new but very common reality that the local issues become global issues and vice versa, because of the weakening of nation-states system and the close interaction between the global and the local. It will be a world literature of dramatizing the contradictions and conflicts between global modernity and local histories which get prevalent within today’s global system. It will be also a world literature not of transcending the place and local histories but transversing them. So this paper tries to suggest a figure of world literature from below after the deconstruction of eurocentric world literary space.
