Female Sexuality in Kim Ki-duk’s Moebius: －Going Beyond Freud and Lacan－

Kim Ki-duk’s Moebius visualizes discussions of sexuality that have evolved around the penis. The penis/phallus was deemed by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan as the somatic and ideological substance that determined sexuality and power structure between male and female. Freud in “Female Sexuality” asserts that sexuality is recognized as infants begin to notice the presence or the absence of a penis. While girls struggle with the absence or loss of it, boys fear for castration as they begin to see their father as a rival for the mother’s love. Expanding Freud’s interpretation, Lacan reads the penis as a signifier that constructs the ideological edifice of sex and sexuality. Moebius, describing all the characters as sexual entities and rather specifically creating a mother who severs her son’s penis as an atonement of her husband’s extramarital affair, delves into the conflict of libidinal wishes and the superego that the two critics had explicated. To clarify the embedded psychoanalytical discourse in the movie, this paper discusses the meaning of the phallus within the realm of Freud’s, Lacan’s, and other critics’ theories. It scrutinizes the intricacy of the relationship of the characters in detail and explicates its signification in terms of sexuality and desire and, as construing the film through a lens of psychoanalysis criticism, contextualizes it in the ongoing discussion of sexuality.
