초록

보편 진리를 대표하는 위대한 작가로서 셰익스피어의 정전적 입지를 옹호하는 기존 휴머니즘 비평에 반기를 들고자, 문화유물론은 역사분석적 성격을 강하게 드러내면서 각 시대의 상황에 따라 도구적으로 변형되어 온 정치적 텍스트로서의 셰익스피어를 논한다. 또한 외국에서의 셰익스피어 수용사에 있어서 괄목할만한 이력을 쌓아온 독일은 기존의 고전 연극에 대항하는 브레히트와 뮐러의 출현으로 인해 셰익스피어의 탈정전화 현상을 목격하게 된다.
서론에서는 셰익스피어 탈정전화 논쟁의 이론적 틀을 제시한 문화유물론에 대해 기술한다. 본론의 1장에서는 문화유물론적 글쓰기의 예 중에 혹스의 <텔마>와 뮐러의 <햄릿머신>을 비교함으로써 ‘텍스트의 역사성, 역사의 텍스트성’을 논하고, 2장에서는 양자의 메타비평적 성격과 정치적 자의식을 부각시키는 디에게시스의 강조, 플롯 중심 읽기와 인물 중심 읽기를 통해 본 전복과 봉쇄의 문제를 다루며, 3장에서는 플롯의 정치성, 그리고 해체를 통한 개인의 주체화를 살펴본다.
문화유물론과 뮐러극은 비평과 희곡이라는 장르상의 괴리에도 불구하고 맑시즘을 기본으로 하면서 셰익스피어의 탈정전화 논쟁을 돕는 이데올로기적 친연성을 공유한다. 첫째, 창조적 글쓰기를 동원한 역사논평의 형태를 취한다. 둘째, 이러한 글쓰기를 통해 텍스트의 정치적 유통과 재생산에 관심을 두고 정치적 참여를 궁극적 목표로 삼는다. 셋째, 무엇보다 맑시즘의 역사관에 기반을 두고 자율적이고 미시적인 실물역사관을 첨가하여 새로운 역사의식 설정에 주력한다.

영어초록

In opposition to the long-standing tradition of humanist criticism upholding Shakespeare as a canon with universal values and transhistorical truths, cultural materialists have argued that Shakespeare is not merely a well-wrought urn for aesthetic celebration but a political text open to rereading and rewriting under the circumstances of its reception. Likewise, the history of Shakespeare’s reception in twentieth-century Germany, Brecht and Müller in particular, has demonstrated that the national poet of England can be deconstructed and appropriated for the ideological interests of their contemporary society. This insistence upon the needs of demystifying and historicizing Shakespeare is the common denominator of British cultural materialism and German Marxist drama.
The introduction examines the key concepts of British cultural materialism, and locates the position of Müller in the history of German reception of Shakespeare. The first chapter draws in the notion of 'the historicity of texts and the textuality of histories’ by comparing two examples of rewriting Shakespeare, Terence Hawkes’s Telmah and Müller’s the Hamletmachine. The second chapter discusses the politics of theater and the theatricality of politics in Müller and his emphasis on the Brechtian dramaturgy of diegesis as means of foregrounding meta-critical function and political self-consciousness, and also compares the different textual effects of subversion and containment in terms of character-oriented reading and plot-centered reading. The third chapter investigated Müller’s politics of deconstructing Shakespeare’s plot and his strategy of reading formation whereby the liberal humanist concept of ‘individual’ is transformed into the cultural materialist counterpart of ‘subject’.
Although cultural materialism and Müller’s drama are different from each other in genre, background, and emphasis, they share a series of ideological underpinnings. First, both serve a historical comment in the mode of creative writing. Second, both emphasize the political commitment and ideological effect of literary text or theatrical performance. Third, both put their ideological base on Marxism so as to construct a new historical consciousness and finally create a better society by means of cultural practices. There commonalities underlie the politics of Marxist Shakespeare wherein the constant dialogue between past and present are made possible and desirable as well.
