この論文は、戦後空間で戦争体験に基づいて国家論を披露した大熊信行（1893-1977)とポスト冷戦空間で「国家意識」や「愛国心」を唱えた佐伯啓思（1949- )を中心に、戦後空間とポスト冷戦空間における国家論や愛国心論を考察し、現代日本の愛国主義の内容と特質を分析している。愛国主義の一般的争点を検討し、戦後空間とポスト冷戦空間の性格や、これらの脈絡を捉える日本の知識人たちの観点を調べ、さらに各空間における愛国心論争や愛国心論の内容と性格を考察している。まず、「国家と個人」に関する議論に示された、愛国心と祖国愛に関する普遍的観点と日本的特殊性を検討する。佐伯は個人よりも歴史的伝統に立つ国家を優先し、大熊は見なされた国家よりも個人の自由を優先していた。つぎに、国家に関する「理念と体験」が愛国心の普遍性と個別性を規定する様子を考察する。佐伯の体験は日本精神に関わり、大熊のそれは国家批判的理念を生み出している。さらに、「自然と作為」の観点から愛国心と国家意識の倫理性と合理性を究明する。個人を威嚇する国家の改革を唱えた大熊はいうまでもなく、伝統に立つ自然的変化を模索した佐伯の場合も愛国心概念が作為的であることを明らかにしている。戦後空間では戦争体験に立脚した国家変革を目指す批判的愛国心論や人類普遍的価値に基づいた国家論が見られ、ポスト冷戦空間では人類普遍的観点よりは伝統と日本精神に立った国家指向的な愛国心が摸索されている。愛国心概念の相違は戦後体制観や民主主義観の差に始まったと言える。

영어초록

This study is to delve into Japanese intellectuals’ conception of the state and patriotism in post-war and post-Cold War Japan, featuring Okuma Nobuyuki(1893-1977), who was vehemently critical of the Japanese state based on his war experience, and Saeki Keishi(1949- ), a conservative thinker favorably espousing the necessity of national identitiy and patriotism in Japan. Preliminary consideration starts with reviewing some general issues of patriotism, moves to grasping Japanese intellectuals’ views of two contexts, and shifts to describing the nature of the argument on patriotism.
Japanese intellectuals’ arguments about patriotism can be understood at three levels.
The level of ‘state vs nation vs individual’ is related to the subject and object of patriotism and national identity. Saeki places priority to ‘the state’ emphasizing Japanese historical tradition; while Okuma respects the individual’s liberty regarding the state as an evil. The level of ‘idea vs experience’ can be set for grasping the universality and the particularity of patriotism. Saeki’s “experience” depends on the idea of “Japanese spirit” whereas Okuma convoyed his criticitical views of the Japanese state. The level of ‘natural vs intentional’ can be also questioned to understand the ethos and the rationality of patriotism. Okuma had his strong intention for drastically reforming the Japanese state infringing the individual’s right; Saeki seeks to intentionally resurrect patriotism even though considering the natural or gradual change of the tradition-based state.
In the postwar context Okuma critically argued the Japanese state and patriotism, based on universal human values and war experience; in post-Cold War context Saeki’s nationalistic patriotism derives its footing from Japanese tradition and Japanese spirit. This difference comes from their constrasting conception of the postwar system and democracy in Japan.
