초록

<身空 詞䐉歌>의 배경 설화로 볼 수 있는 三國遺事 元聖大王條는 신라 下代를 개창하는 元聖王의 신화적 모습을 잘 보여주고 있다. 먼저 원성왕의 즉위 설화에는 天官寺의 우물과 北川(閼川)이 등장하고 있는데, 이는 그가 신라 시조로부터 이어지는 上代의 의식을 이어받았다는 왕권의 정통성을 보여주는 상징이다.
신라에서 우물은 시조 赫居世와 閼英과 같은 신성한 생명이 잉태된 곳으로, 水神인 용이 거주하거나 오고 가는 곳이었다. 閼川(北川)은 辰韓 6村 중 閼川 楊山村으로 6部 조상들이 모여 왕을 맞이하고자 회의했던 장소이며, 우물에서 태어난 혁거세와 알영이 東泉과 北川에서의 목욕이라는 통과 의례를 거쳐 신성한 인물로 재탄생하였다.
또한, 원성왕이 즉위하자 아버지 孝讓은 신라 中代 왕권의 계승자임을 보여주는 상징물인 萬波息笛을 전해주었고, 이로 인하여 일본의 신라 침략을 막았다. 이어 원성왕은 唐과의 외교를 원만하게 하면서, 왜소해진 중대 왕권을 상징하는 護國龍을 보호하고, 河西國 사람의 술수를 물리쳤다. 이는 그가 中代 무열왕계의 문제를 해결하는 새로운 下代 왕권의 개척자라는 모습을 보여준다.
원성왕의 설화 속 신비한 모습은 역사적으로도 佛敎 寺院에 기초를 둔 경제적 기반, 저수지 축조 등의 治水 능력, 많은 災異 속에서도 몇 가지 보이는 祥瑞 기록, 외교 관계 등을 통해 정치적‧경제적‧종교적으로 실체가 있는 능력을 보여주고 있었다.
원성왕은 즉위 전부터 儒‧佛‧仙이 합쳐진 國仙처럼 종교적 성격을 가진 祭儀를 주관하였다. 그리고 鄕歌 중에서 집단의 결속과 천지 귀신을 감동시키는 영역에 속하는 <身空 詞䐉歌>라는 작품을 직접 지어 이를 제사 행위에서 演行한 인물이었다.

The passage on King Wonseong in Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) can be seen as the background narrative for the poem Singongsanoega. It vividly portrays the mythical image of King Wonseong, who is credited with laying the foundation for the later stages of the Silla dynasty. The inaugural narrative of King Wonseong features both the well of Cheongwansa Temple and Bukcheon (Alcheon) Stream. These symbols signify the continuity of royal authority, demonstrating that the king inherited the rites of the early period that originated from the founder of Silla.
In Silla, wells were considered sacred, where divine life, similar to revered figures like Hyeokgeose and Lady Aryeong, were believed to be conceived. Legends say that water deities, such as dragons, resided in or frequented these wells. Bukcheon (Alcheon) Stream of the Alcheon Yangsan Village served as the gathering place of the six ancestral tribes of the Jinhan confederacy, where they convened to welcome the king. The stream is where the legendary figures Hyukgeose and Lady Aryeong were reborn as sacred individuals through a ritual that involved bathing in the East Spring and the Bukcheon Stream.
Furthermore, upon King Wonseong’s ascension to the throne, his father handed down the symbolic item known as Manpasikjeok (a pipe), signifying the continuity of royal authority in the middle period of Silla. This event played a crucial role in preventing Japan’s invasion of Silla. In addition, by maintaining friendly ties with the Tang dynasty, King Wonseong protected the “Guardian Dragon,” a symbol of the diminished central authority of Silla, and thwarted the schemes of individuals from the state of Haseo. This illustrates that King Wonseong emerged as a pioneer of a new royal authority in the later period, one capable of addressing the challenges faced by the powerful middle-stage kingship of Silla during the King Muyeol era.
The mystical portrayal of King Wonseong in the narratives is substantiated historically through his demonstrated abilities in politics, economy, and religion. This includes his foundation of an economic base rooted in Buddhist temples, his expertise in water management demonstrated in the construction of reservoirs, records of auspicious signs even in the face of numerous disasters, and his diplomatic relations.
Even before his enthronement, King Wonseong presided over religious ceremonies that combined Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, resembling a divine ritual with a religious character akin to a hwarang or an elite warrior of the country. Moreover, he personally composed the work Singongsanoega, which belongs to the category of “hometown songs.” This piece falls into the realm of moving the spirits of heaven and earth, fostering unity within the community. He performed this composition during ritual ceremonies.
