This paper intends to comprehensively describe and explore three target words and their associated words extracted from a Korean newspaper collection, the Trends 21 Corpus (Kim, et al., 2010). The target words refer to social class such as pwuyuchung (‘the rich class’), cwungsanchung (‘the middle class’), and pinkonchung (‘the poor class’). The associated words co-occur with the target words in the same paragraph. Concerns surrounding each social class can be explored via the words used in the news articles issued from the year 2000 to the year 2009. Based on our work, the co-occurring words represent the characteristics and class distinctions of each social class. For example, both pwuyuchung and cwungsanchung co-occur with seykum (‘tax’), apatu (‘apartment’), janye (‘sons and daughters’), and so on. However, kokup (‘high quality’), myengpwum (‘luxury goods’), baykhwajem (‘department store’) and twenty other words only co-occur with pwuyuchung. We present a statistical analysis of the texts to illustrate changes in the social class. In order to reach our goal, we adopt a network analysis in order to understand cultural differences in each class as well as the social change within social class, as captured in the words. We have used t-score to estimate associations between words and employed Pajek (Nooy, Mrvar, &Vladimir, 2005) to visualize the relationship between a target word and its co-occurring words.
