Chungmu-gong Gaseung(忠武公家乘) is a compilation of all the writings, documents and materials related to Yi Sun-shin, compiled by his great-great grandson Yi Hong-eui/李弘毅 who was also the individual designated to oversee memorial services for Yi Sun-shin. The compilation was published when his nephew Yi Bong-sang(李鳳祥) was named as the Commander for the Left force of the Jeolla region. Yi Shun-shin’s descendants were frequently picked for public services, and especially after Yi Bong-sang was killed in the Mushin/戊申-year revolt fighting the rebellion as the Commander of the Chungcheong region in the early days of king Yeongjo’s reign, the reputation of the Yi Sun-shin family as one of honor and loyalty was consolidated stronger than ever.
Many of the descendants were named as the Supreme Commander of the Three Provinces(三道水軍統制使), and as a result the seat itself came to be considered as one almost owned by the Yi Sun-shin house. The descendants also exploited such situation, and actively engaged themselves in projects designed to commemorate Yi Shun-shin. As a prelude to all this, Chungmu-gong Gaseung(忠武公家乘) was compiled during the latter half of king Sukjong’s reign to remind the public of Yi Sun-shin’s contributions and grant the descendants a political status based upon the reputation of Yi Sun-shin.
