氣質變化, 욕망의 정화를 위한 성리학적 기획 －栗谷李珥의 心性修養論을 중심으로－ (The Change of Gijil as a Neo-Confucian Way to Purify Desire —Focusing on Yulgok Yi I’s Theory of Mind-Nature and Self-cultivation—)

초록

‘氣質의 변화를 통한 天理의 회복’은 유학 또는 성리학의
전통 속에서 욕망의 문제에 대처하기 위해 제시된 방책 중 하나이다.
본 논문에서는 氣質의 變化를 핵심적 수양방법으로 삼았던 栗谷李珥
와 직접적인 天理의 體得을 학문수양의 중심에 놓았던 退溪李滉의 心
性修養論을 비교 고찰함으로써 성리학에서 氣質變化의 이론적 기반과
그 의미를 규명하고자 하였다. 수양ㆍ공부론에서의 차이는 心, 性, 情에
대한 이들의 견해차로부터 비롯되었다. 이황은 성현들이 道心과 人心,
本然之性과 氣質之性, 四端과 七情으로 각각 구분한 취지가 무엇이었는
가에 주목하였고, 이에 따라 비본질적인 인심, 기질지성, 칠정에 연연할
것이 아니라 도심, 본연지성, 사단에 집중할 것을 주장하며, 이를 직접 인식ㆍ체득하는 방법으로서 敬의 자세를 강조하였다. 이에 비해 이이는
도심ㆍ인심, 본연지성과 기질지성, 사단과 칠정의 理氣論的구조에 초
점을 맞추고 理와 氣의 역할을 선명하게 구분함으로써 氣의 淨化를 통
해 理의 本然이 드러나게 하는 수양론을 주장하게 되었다. 한편 이러한
氣質의 변화가 성리학의 가치를 구현하는 일정한 방향성을 가지고 성
실하게 수행되려면, 計較商量하는 인간의 의식과 의지가 선행되어야 한
다는 점에 주목하며 ‘誠意’를 그 방안으로 제시하였다.

영어초록

‘Recovering cheoli (天理; the law of the nature) by changing gijil (氣
質; physical substance)’ is a way that was proposed to cope with the
problem of ‘desire’ in Confucianism or Neo-Confucianism. In this paper, I
inquire into the theoretical basis and the meaning of ‘the change of gijil’
comparing Yulgok Yi I’s theory of the mind-nature and self-cultivation,
which took the change of gijil as the main method of the self-cultivation,
with Toegye Yi Hwang’s which put the direct comprehension of cheoli on
the center of the study and the self-cultivation. The differences in the
theories of the cultivation or study came from the differences of their
view-points on the mind-heart, the nature, and the emotions. Yi Hwang
kept his eyes on the reason why the Sages divided the Moral Mind (道心)
and the Human Mind (人心), the Original Nature (本然之性) and the
Physical Nature (氣質之性), and the Four Beginnings (四端) and the
Seven Emotions (七情). Then insisting that people should not retain a
lingering desire for the Human Mind, the Physical Nature, and the Seven
Emotions which are not essential, but pay attention to the Moral Mind, the Original Nature, and the Four Beginnings, he stressed the attitude of
respect (敬) as the method to directly recognize and master the essential
things. However, Yi I took notice of the theoretical structure of li-gi in
the Moral Mind and the Human Mind, the Original Nature and the
Physical Nature, and the Four Beginnings and the Seven Emotions, and
clearly divided the roles of li and gi in them. So he argued his cultivation
theory that people could exhibit the original character of li by the
purification of gi. In the meantime, he gave attention to the point that the
person’s cognition and will, which could calculate, compare, and deliberate,
must precede the change of gijil in order to perform this change of gijil
with the constant direction that realize the value of Neo-Confucianism, and
then he suggested the sincerity of the will as the way to practice the
cultivation.
